President’s Message
Here we are again at the end of summer. Maybe you
traveled or had others travel to visit you. Maybe you just
stayed in the air conditioning and relaxed. Whatever you
did, I hope you had a pleasant time.
Now as we begin the fall season, think about what you can
do with your time; something positive with your energy.
Think about taking an office. We are still looking for
someone to fill the Executive Vice President’s office of
NGAA West. It involves planning programs for our four
luncheons, buying the wine for table prizes and planning
the “entertainment”. This could be a singer or an
informative speaker… or maybe you have new ideas.
And if you belong to NGAA West for bowling or golf,
remember that your leagues exist because of the parent
organization. So how about stepping up to do your part?
Officers change at the December luncheon, so we need to
find someone now. Let me know if you’re the one. We
need a Vice President. --Marilyn Chryst
Executive VP Remarks
Our entertainment at our September luncheon will be Derek
Morgan and his Country Western Band. At this meeting we
will need to vote on our revised by-laws. Everyone was
provided a copy in the June newsletter. Please look these
over before our September luncheon.
I hope everyone had a memorable summer. As stated in the
newsletter, from June 21st to the 26th I rode my bike from
St. Charles to Clinton Missouri on the Katy Trail. The ride
was very enjoyable. I had the opportunity to see our state in
a different light.
At the end of July my son Frank Jr. and I, with our kayak
and canoe, spent a few days floating the Black River into
Clearwater Lake. We enjoyed a lazy day at the lake with
my daughters Susan and Sarah, and in August we will
spend time with seven of our ten grandchildren. As our
children get older it is harder and harder to get everyone
together at one time, so we do what we can, making and
enjoying memories for a lifetime.
As we approach December and our election of officers, we
need more of our members to step up to the plate and fill
these offices. I will not be able to serve you as president
next year without an Executive Vice President. We
desperately need your help in filling this and our other
offices as they open up. You can make a difference. The
NGAA West Chapter needs YOU! --Frank Aufmuth
June Luncheon Notes
The June Luncheon for NGAA West members was held on
June 22 at Pietro’s. Marilyn Chryst, President, led us in the
Pledge of Allegiance, and Andrew Jackson in the
invocation. There were thirty-five members and guests at
the meeting. Befitting the time of year, this was a “light”
luncheon, and we hope for better attendance in September.
Our featured speaker was Ann Lowery of the AARP
Speakers Bureau. She discussed current fraud trends and
practices in the St. Louis area and distributed copies of the
AARP Watchdog Alert Handbook—Thirteen Ways Con
Artists Steal Your Money, a list that includes identify fraud,
investment fraud and other common scams. Some
recommended ways to protect yourself against fraud
include 1) protecting your social security number and other
personal information, 2) monitoring your bills, financial
statements and reports on your credit, 3) protecting
personal information numbers (PINs) and passwords, 4)
being skeptical of phone calls or emails that say they are
from your bank or the IRS, and from door-to-door sales
people and 6) protecting your incoming and outgoing mail.
The 50/50 winners were Les Kemp, Bob Eddy. Casey
Szpak, Kathy Pozzo, Bob Meinhardt (2), JoAnn Moran, Jimmy Boyd and Paulette Martin.
Helen Stephens Recognized
Jessica Daues of NGA's Office of Corporate
Communications has written a story about 1936 Gold
Medal Olympian Champion Helen Stephens, based on
input from former ACIC / DMA employees who remember
Helen, the “Fulton Flash” in those Berlin games of 80 years
ago, who later worked for many years as a research librarian
at 3200 South Second Street.
The story is on the NGA web page, www.nga.mil
9/11 Remembered. Family Day Hosted
On September 12 NGA conducted a “9-11 Recollections"
event at NGA headquarters and at 3200 South Second
Street. The remembrance event featured recollections and
discussions, and was moderated by NGA historian Dr. Gary
Weir. James Clapper, NGA director at that time, appeared
in a taped presentation.
On Saturday, September 17 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., NGA
West was scheduled to host another NGA Family Day
NGAA West members were invited to both events. Since
they involved classified information, those attending were
asked to complete security information.

Negative Engravers
Rich Egan
Once again a few Negative Engravers, still breathing, met
and reminisced at El Maguey Restaurant in Concord Plaza.
The June attendees were Libby Lanning, Don Lippold, John
Carty, Harry Lemakis and Rich Egan.
Most of the talk these days is about aches and pains and
elections. One of this group would like to nominate Benito
Mussolini for U.S President, if he is available,
The group met again on July 14th at El Maguey .The Fab
Five again were the attendees. These faithful ones were
John Carty, Don Lippold, Libby Lanning, Harry Lemakis
and yours truly. Once again the main topic of conversation
was the upcoming elections.
Loud screams were heard as various predictions were
stated, and the Mexican managers expressed their
nervousness. Perhaps next month, we hoped, everyone
would be happy.
Our August meeting was held at El Maguey's on Thursday,
August 11th. The attendees were Larry Weisz, Libby
Lanning, Don Lippold, Millie Jackson, Pat Dickie, Kent
Kenniston and John Carty.
It was great to see the ladies return to join in the
conversations. A couple of guys, Larry and Kent, also
returned,
Next month the luncheon will be on September 8th at the
same place. Everyone is welcome. The Dos Equis and
Margaritas are always ice cold.
Chart Plant Employee Roster still available online
The list of more than 18,000 ACIC and DMAAC
employees from 1950 until 2004 is still available on the
NGAA West Home Page, but is now in the “Members
Home” section available to members only.
The list shows a first and last name, whether the
individual worked for ACIC, DMAAC or both, whether
they are living, dead or “unknown” (in some cases), the
section or branch where they worked (in some cases), the
separation date (in some cases) and the date the
information was entered.
To see the list, go to the NGAA West home page,
http://www.ngaawest.org and look for “Members Home”;
scroll down to the “NEWS” section and look for “cper
list.”
Sappington Post Office Named for Bill Riordan’s
Grandson
Pat Wiese notes that on July 6 the Sappington Post Office
at 11662 Gravois Road was renamed the Lt. Daniel P.
Riordan Post Office Building. Lieutenant Riordan, 24, was
killed June 23, 2007 at age 24 while serving as a tank
commander in Iraq. He was the grandson of the late Bill
Riordan, well known to NGAA West members.
At the June
luncheon Lou
Decker, wearing a
jacket he and his
team were
awarded in 1964,
gave a short
account of the
many games
played and won
by ACIC and
DMAAC teams in
the St. Louis
Industrial
Softball League
during the 1960’s
and ‘70s.
