Present. No commercial value.
We are pleased to share our “Keche” magazine by means of 19th edition of
Nako Knitting Festival magazine. We believe that Keche will please felt-lovers
and those that are candidates of the application.
While the felt, a material found in Anatolia, which dates back to old times, was
fading into oblivion, it has obtained the position it deserves thanks to a lot
of entrepreneurs and felt-fanciers. We, as Nako, work meticulously to make
felt adaptable to all fields in the life. Felt is a suitable material which you can
give countless shapes by the hands and with simple materials, reflecting your
own taste and style, and it is a product that enables you to exhibit your own
creativity.
As we have mentioned, usage areas of felt can only be limited to your creativity.
Your knitted jumpers, cardigans or clothes etc. can be made different by felt
decorations you place on them. You can give a new look to your clothes that you
are fed up with using over time through felt accessories that may be applied
on them.
We observe that there is an increase in number of those who are interested in
felting, and felting applications become diversified.
We would like to introduce to you a lady, dear Luba Çay, who exercises this
hobby in every field of her life, going beyond just curiosity. Dear Luba Çay
has set her heart on felting, and spends most of her time preparing fantastic
patterns using felt. We have prepared Nako TV videos in which we describe
felting applications with Luba ÇAY who is the owner of all patterns included in
our magazine. We would like to extend our endless thanks to her through this
edition, and to inform that you can watch the videos on our website.
Even though you haven’t met with felting yet, you can easily make use of our
magazine. We are open to any questions, opinions and suggestions you would
like to share with us. We also would like you to know that we are open to any
ideas that will help improve felting art further.
We hope you enjoy our magazine…
Warm regards,
Nako Family

WET FELT MAKING TECHNIQUES
Cut the felt off gently with the finger tips and place it on the surface as it is. First place the tufts horizontally then vertically and then horizontally again, one after the other paying attention there are no gaps between them. The width and length vary depending on the model you are making (Picture a).
Sprinkle the prepared water with detergent over the felt to wet it completely. Touch and press on the wet felt gently with your finger tips in order for felt to suck water properly (Picture b).
Cover the wet felt completely with a thin plastic bag. Sprinkle some water over the plastic bag to ensure your hands easily move on it. Press gently on the plastic bag with your hands to make the wool felt. A smoother can be used to shorten this stage. Press and hold on the smoother on the felt for a while to help wool turn into felt quickly. You can do this operation by your hands, moving them upwards-downwards and left to right. The longer this operation is, the stronger the felt will be. Felting stage is quite fast that you can observe visually. (Picture c and d).
You can use different colors for your felt patterns. First thing you should do is to prepare the bottom surface. Just add the colored wools during felting stage and continue operations as stated. A different felt color can be used, or some thread containing wool and cloth can be used with the felt. You need to shape the pattern (i.e. a flower, leaf, or bird pattern) with the hand. No other tools are used. However, you can produce highly different patterns with prepared felt with the help of mold. The shapes you make when the felt is wet remains unchanged when the felt is dried (Picture d).
In preparation phase, spread a plastic bag on your work surface to perform operations.

1- Prepare a round template using nylon, 50% smaller than the felt material (its size should be 50% larger than the head circumference). 2- Place the felts one after the other in 3 layers brimming over 1 cm out of the template. 3- Do some felting operation and then turn it upside down. Put the parts of the felt brimming over the template on the template by hands. In addition, a template of 15 cm which has been prepared beforehand is placed in the center of the large template to make
the top. 4- Place felt again outside the template, not on the template placed in the center (so that you can create a hole to put it on your head). Sprinkle some water over it and cover with the plastic. Perform the felting operation, then remove this small template at the end of the operation. Smooth and rub the sides of the cap with hands. Then perform some felting operation and shocking. Give the cap a shape as you desire and leave it to dry.
Rinse the felt with clear water thoroughly until you obtain a material. Give it a shape as you desire and leave it to dry (Picture h).
You can fold inside the warps produced during felting operation to make it smooth and then continue the rest of the operation.
Sprinkle water with detergent over the felt on regular basis during felting operation.
Upon completion of felting operation, take the material out of the plastic and wrap it around the sponge roll and start rolling up and down to give it a shape. Wrap the each side of the material around the sponge roll separately to make it proportional and even (Picture f).
After this stage, have the felt a shock bath. Put cold water in a container and hot water in other container. First dip the felt into hot water and then cold water, and drain off any surplus water. Do this operation for 3-4 times and continue without placing the felt between the plastic bags. Sprinkle water with detergent over the felt to make felting by hands. Knead the material on the surface as if it is dough and beat it until it is felted thoroughly (Picture g).
