Nagoya is not only famous for its liveliness, but also for its various, must-see historical sites and points of interest including Nagoya Castle, shrines and temples, and resource centers, which have invaluable cultural merit.
Must-see Sights
Nagoya Castle
TokugawaenSakae Area
The Tokugawa Art Museum
In 1612, Nagoya Castle was built as a residence of the Tokugawa family. It was rebuilt in 1959. The pair of golden "shachi" on its soaring roof symbolize the castle and the city of Nagoya.
Shirotori GardenOnly a few minutes walk from Nagoya Congress Center, there is a traditional Japanese garden where you can enjoy the beautiful scenery and “Matcha”-powdered green tea.
This bustling, vibrant red temple is especially crowded during holidays and festivals. A great place for discounted goods, "Osu Shopping Malls," is located beside the temple.
The second lord, Mitsumoto of the Owari Branch of Tokugawa family, settled here to retire in 1695. It is a stroll style landscaped garden centered around an inner pond reminiscent of the feudal lord grounds.
Atsuta ShrineSurrounded by 1,000 year-old camphor trees, Atsuta Shrine, with its 1,900 year history, is one of three grand shrines in Japan. Notable attractions here include "Nobunaga Wall," and Atsuta Jingu Museum.
This museum contains historic artifacts from the Owari Branch of the Tokugawa family. “The Illustrated Tale of Genji,” a designated national treasure, is the centerpiece of its collection.
Sakae is one of the two major shopping areas in Nagoya, along with the Nagoya Station area. Department stores and luxury brand stores are concentrated here, and filled with the latest fashion trends.Page 13-14

Toyota Commemorative Museumof Industry and Technology
Jointly established by the 13 companies of the Toyota Group, textile machinery and automobiles are the focus of the exhibits. Manufacturing machine history, from its early beginnings to present day computer controlled machines, is on display with the opportunity to operate some of the machines yourself.
Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens
This is a comprehensive park consisting of a zoo, botanical garden and amusement park. A nocturnal animal house is also a very popular attraction. The botanical garden has a large greenhouse, and the Manyo Passage and flower gardens are a nice place to visit.

What is Nagoya like?Nagoya is a vibrant and attractive city with various aspects, such as must-see sights, local cuisine and art.
OVERVIEW OF NAGOYA
5 6
Typical Japanese food like sushi and tempura are tasty, but trying unique local cuisine is also a must for the palate. Nagoya has many unique dishes such as misonikomi udon and temmusu, among others.
Local Dishes of Nagoya
The followings are products bearing their area names, and whose traditions are carried on by highly skilled artisans. These items are great for souvenirs.
Souvenirs of Nagoya
Misokatsu
A Nagoya favorite, these breaded pork cutlets are served with a thick miso sauce and other side dishes to complete a lunch or dinner set.
Temmusu
A mouthful size rice ball containing fried shrimp.
Kishimen
Broad, flat wheat noodles in a broth with soy sauce and various toppings like tempura or green onions. Try it at restaurants or even on the platforms of big train stations.
Nagoya Cochin
Nagoya Cochin, a variety of chicken, is well known for its crispiness and delicious taste. You can enjoy it cooked in a number of ways.
Tebasaki is deep-fried chicken wingtips. Once tasted, it is never forgotten. The spicy flavor also goes very well with beer or sake, Japanese rice wine.
Hitsumabushi
A famous Nagoya dish of grilled eel served on rice with various condiments like Japanese horseradish.
Nagoya Sensu (folding fans)
Dating back to the mid-18th century, Nagoya Sensu traces its origins to a family of Kyoto fan manufacturers. Made of paper and bamboo, these ceremonial fans often bear fine calligraphy or designs of great elegance.
Nagoya Yuzen (hand-painted yuzen dyeing & stenciled yuzen dyeing)
These elegantly designed garments result from an intricate process of freehand drawing and dyeing. Stenciled Yuzen dyeing calls for the dye to be brushed on through paper stencils. To make a colorful Yuzen fabric, numerous stencils-each for a specific color-are employed.
Arimatsu-Narumi Shibori (tie-dyeing)
This is a tie-dyeing technique from the late 16th century used to create elegant and refined designs. Here are many kinds of tie-dyed goods, such as clothing materials and small articles.
Cloisonné
Originating from Dutch cloisonné over a century and a half ago, Owari-Shippo utilizes various enamels filled into cells on a metal frame. The product is heated to an extremely high temperature and polished, resulting in beautiful plates or vases.
Misonikomi
Nagoyans eat this version of udon cooked in a miso base soup with various vegetables and meats.
