PRINCIPAL’S REPORT—WEEK 9
I recently read an article by Miro Martin on ‘What
makes a great school?’ This article identified one key
feature as “great schools have great participation by
all members of the community’. If this is the case,
Armidale City is certainly a great school. The recent
sporting, academic and cultural events within our
school have certainly seen staff, parents and
students working together to ensure all students have
every opportunity to experience success and
enjoyment from learning. Without the support and
work of parents and staff and the kind donations of
the broader community we would not be able to meet
the needs of our students to the level at which we do.
Our recent success at the State Basketball
Championships, the Da Vinci Decathlon, NW Zone
Athletics, Debating, Art into Waste, Fair Trading Art
Exhibition, Art Extravaganza are all because staff
and parents work together to provide physical,
financial and moral support for the work of the
school.
The election day BBQ and the meal deals are
excellent examples of community participation and
support. The efforts by Amanda Hess, Megan
Towie, Megan Cristani and their band of helpers
raised approximately $1400. A fantastic effort – the
staff and students thank you.
Later today I will have the opportunity to visit
Martin’s Gully to watch our students participate in
the Premiers Spelling Bee. I wish all students the
best of luck and can’t wait to report the results in
next week’s newsletter.
A huge congratulations to our amazing Boys
Basketball team who were, as of last Monday, the
State Boys Basketball Knockout Champions. These
amazing students with the support of Mrs Docksey
and Brian Sindel travelled to Bathurst on Sunday and
returned Monday evening. The boys played
exceptionally well throughout Monday winning all 3
games to take out the State Champions title. Well
done, boys.
I would like to congratulate the 8 students who
participated in the Da Vinci Decathlon last Friday.
Your achievements are well deserved. Thank you to
Mrs Russell for all her work in preparing the
students for the event.

SASS Recognition Week
This week is SASS Recognition Week. We often take
for granted the contribution support staff in schools
make on a daily basis. We are very lucky at Armidale
City to have such committed and skilled support staff.
Our SASS (School Administrative and Support Staff)
staff include our wonderful office ladies – Mrs
Campbell, Mrs Keogh, Mrs Boyd, Mrs Matthews and
Mrs Sindel; School Support Officers’ –Mrs Thomas,
Mrs Harper, Mrs Lord, Mr Casey, Mr Shaw; our
General Assistant – Mr Russell; the Aboriginal Officer
– Mr Widders. Each member of our team work
together to provide a happy and efficient working
environment for staff and students and always take on
responsibilities beyond the expected. On behalf of the
school staff, students and parents, I would like to
thank all our SASS for their hard work and support –
we know who is really important in our school. On
Friday the P&C are providing a morning tea as part of
our thank you to these amazing people. I encourage all
parents to acknowledge the great job these people do
in our school for our students.

Next Thursday 19 September is the annual visit by the
Armidale High School Year 12 students. Many of the
students are ex ACPS students who enjoy coming back
in their final year to provide some short entertainment
and raise funds for the Special Education unit at AHS.
Students are asked to donate a gold coin as part of
their entry into the show.
Attendance
Attached to today’s newsletter is an information sheet
about attendance. I would remind parents that all
absences must be explained within seven days of
returning to school. In accordance with the Student
Attendance in Government School Procedures, students
who have frequent absences due to illness can be
required to provide a medical certificate if absences
exceed fifteen days throughout the year. Students
who do not have a satisfactory explanation for their
absences provided by parents will have an ‘unexplained’
note for the absences. Ongoing unexplained days or
continued lateness to school may be followed up with a
referral to the Home school Liaison Officer who can
provide support to families to ensure students are
attending school regularly and on time.
Brown Street Gate Access
Parents and students are reminded that access through
the double gates in Brown Street is not permitted.
Please use the single gate for access to the school.

DA VINCI DECATHLON WINNERS The inaugural Northern NSW Da Vinci Decathlon was
held during Week 8 at The Armidale School. A team of
8 students was selected from 5/6R to compete in this
event. It is an academic inter school gala day run in the
spirit of an Olympic Decathlon with events of an
academic nature.
The selected students - Jack Bell, Riley Doak, Asher
Clark, Sam Watson, Annie Worthing, Kate Jones,
Xinyue Li and Rhoie Collins - were selected as a team
who were able to complement each other in the various
disciplines and work cohesively as a team. The team
took out first place in the disciplines of English, Maths
and Chess, Science and Creative Producers. Also
scoring highly in Cartography, Code Breaking and Art
and Poetry, Engineering, Philosophy and General
Knowledge. This meant that they were the overall
winners in the Year 6 division.
Our team competed against teams from The Armidale
School, PLC, St Johns Junior School, St Mary's,
Carinya Christian School, Holy Trinity Inverell and
Macquarie Anglican College in Dubbo. The ACPS team
utilised their individual subject strengths as well as
their ability to work as a team to achieve an excellent
result. They are also to be commended for the
outstanding manner in which they represented the
school.
