. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 .1 GENERAL RECOMMENDATIONS
The following server configurations are recommended for a NearPoint implementation:
• Operating System: For both NearPoint and SQL Server, Windows 2008 Standard or Enterprise Editions and Windows 2003 R2 64-bit Standard or Enterprise Editions. The R2 versions of these 64-bit Editions are also supported. Legacy Windows x86 (32-bit) Editions are supported, though not recommended.
• Processors: The x64 (also called x86-64) family of processors manufactured by either Intel or AMD running at around 2 GHz. The number of processor cores is determined by the Sizing Calculator.
• Memory (RAM): At least 4 GB. The actual number is determined by the Sizing Calculator.
• Disks Storage: The disk storage capacity, requisite input/output operations per second (IOPS) and redundant array of independent disks (RAID) configuration are determined by the Sizing Calculator. These recommendations must be met.
• Physical Servers: For optimal performance, NearPoint and SQL Server should be installed on separate physical servers. In certain isolated cases warranted by low work flows, you can co-locate both the NearPoint and SQL Server application on one physical server.
• Virtual Server: If you run NearPoint on virtual servers such as VMWare or Hyper-V, you might see decreased performance. If configured properly, these decreases can be negligible. To configure virtualized operating systems (OS) for optimal performance, ensure that you dedicate sufficient processor cores, RAM, and disk resources to the virtualized OS (guest OS). Follow the requirements of the Sizing Calculator.
Consider your future requirements for processor cores, RAM, and disk resources. By default, the Sizing Calculator provides details on requirements for up to 3 years of future growth.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 2 .2 HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS
The CPU, memory, and storage requirements for the NearPoint system depend on the following factors:
• The amount of accumulated messages that NearPoint needs to ingest initially
• The number of Exchange users you plan to manage
• The daily workload of emails, files, and SharePoint items to be archived
NearPoint supports a variety of storage devices, including serial advanced technology attachments (SATA). To configure these devices, use some form of hardware RAID. NearPoint supports almost any type of direct-access storage that Microsoft supports. However, one reason to implement NearPoint is to optimize its capabilities for data protection, recovery, and archiving using the lowest-cost reliable storage. Low-cost solutions are often built around SATA drives.
NearPoint does not support NAS devices for any volumes except the IOR. NearPoint supports selected common internet file system (CIFS) devices as targets for the IOR volume. To mitigate the longer latencies for CIFS devices, NearPoint has a caching feature. To use this feature, you must provision a disk device called the DiskCache volume.
Note: For virtualized servers such as VMWare ESX and Microsoft Hyper-V, you must dedicate sufficient processor and disk resources. Provision at least 4 dedicated processor cores and the requisite disk IOPS to avoid performance degradation. Virtual Hard Disks (VHD) are supported as long as the requisite IOPS are met (verified by our IOMeter tests).
CIFS is not supported for Shadow volumes as they require block storage.
CIFS is not recommended for Index volumes as performance will be slower during indexing and search (SSR and eDiscovery) operations.

This appendix covers some examples to which you can refer for sizing your Server storage, for a current and growing enterprise. The examples include an initial sizing of the NearPoint Server system hardware, NearPoint Server storage, disk volume layouts, and SQL Server database size, and location.

The following figure shows the logical relationship between volume types and idealized load characteristics. For example, the Smart Extract process has light reads and heavy writes on the EDB shadow, while at the same time producing heavy writes to the message/attachment (indexed object repository) volume.

RAID Levels
The NearPoint workload uses RAID volumes according to the guidelines described below. Many disk sub-systems provide only certain RAID levels and selecting the closest fit is acceptable. Larger sub-systems are generally not impacted by RAID level to specific spindle mapping.
Volume Function
Recommended RAID Level
Allocation (Cluster) Size
Stripe Size Comments
Boot / System Volume /Temp
RAID-1 4K 64K We recommend that the %Windows%\temp directory be hosted on a [RAID 0+1] or a [RAID-1+0 (RAID-10)] volume. The data on this volume need not be resilient, but we recommend [RAID 0+1], or [RAID 1+0 (RAID-10)] rather than RAID-0 because the former facilitates non-disruptive operation in the presence of drive failures, if the system supports hot-plug drives.
Paging File / Swap
RAID-1 4K 64K We recommend that you create a separate volume for the Windows Paging file. Sizing should follow Windows recommendations, and be fully pre-allocated to the recommended size.
Shadow Repository
RAID 4, 5, 6, 50, or DP
64K 64K This volume holds the Shadow copy of the Exchange databases. It must be high-performance and resilient.

The NearPoint Logical Workload
Best Practice: Follow the hardware vendors' best practices for Windows 2003 64-bit NTFS Volumes regarding stripe and offset. For example, some vendors require 64-bit volumes to offset the OS Partition, which is accomplished with the Disk Partition command.
Indexed Object Repository
RAID 4, 5, 6, 50, or DP
4K 64K This volume stores the Smart Extracted messages items and attachments. It must be high-performance and resilient since it holds critical archive data. You should prepare this volume for growth, and allow for adding storage to an existing volume non-disruptively.
Index Volume RAID 4, 5, 6, 50, or DP
4K 64K This volume holds all the indexed information that it uses to search archived data. It must be high-performance and resilient.
Scratch Volume RAID-1 or RAID-10 4K 64K This volume holds all the temporary data for PST, Message Restore, Mimosa Archive Cache, and such NearPoint operations.

RAID-1 or RAID-10 64K 64K For more information, see the Mimosa NearPoint for Microsoft Exchange Server Installation Guide.
SQL Logs (for all database instances)
RAID-1 or RAID-10 64K 64K This volume holds temporary log data for the SQL databases.

For optimum NearPoint performance, ensure that apart from the system volumes, you allocate enough space for the following NearPoint volumes:
• Shadow Volume—Hosts copies of the production EDBs, STMs, and logs
• IOR Volume—Hosts messages and attachments after you extract them from the EDBs, STMs, or uploaded PST files
• Index Volume—Hosts the full-text index for all data in the IOR volume
• SQL Database Volume—Hosts the SQL Filegroups for NearPoint
• SQL Log Volume—Hosts SQL database log files
The following points pertain to the examples in the following sections:
• RAID controllers or cards must be provisioned to house the disk spindle population.
• CPU chips in servers must meet or exceed the performance of the Intel Harpertown class of processors. The Dell 2950 and Dell 1950 are examples of servers with these CPU chips.
B.2.1 Suggested Hardware for 50-100 Mailboxes
NearPoint Server - Minimum of one is required
For example: Dell 2950 (or hardware with similar or better capabilities)
• 4 CPU cores with 4GB RAM
• Windows Server 2008 Standard 64-bit
• RAID-1 2x750GB 7.2k rpm OS, NP Binaries, NP Scratch
• RAID-5 4x750GB 7.2k rpm for NP Shadow, IOR, and Index volumes
