Budget Update

Thank You from Heather:
“I cannot say thank you enough! Thank you for all your love
and support on this journey of going back to school. Thank
you for the space and time needed to write my dissertation.
Thank you to the leadership team of Midway Christian Church
for stepping in so many times when I was in class and unable
to be the pastoral presence for our members. Thank you for
the beautiful robe. Thank you for the gifts at graduation. Thank you for the
prayers. Thank you for being my guinea pigs for my project. Thank you for
filling out the surveys. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. I have said this
before, but I will say it again, this DMin is as much your degree as it is mine.
None of it would have been possible without you. I am reminded over and
over again how truly humbling it is to serve in ministry with all of you.
I give thanks for the honor of being your pastor and for walking this journey
of faith with all of you.”
- Rev. Dr. Heather McColl
Sunday, August 4th, 3:00 p.m. & Sunday, August 18th, 3:00 p.m.
Faithful Families/Thriving Communities (Faithful Families) works
directly in communities of faith across the country to promote health
for individuals, families, and local communities. The program is open
to all faith and religious traditions and engages faith communities in
health education, environmental changes to support health, and
community-wide health initiatives.
OUR VISION: Faithful Families believes that communities of faith are
important health advocates, particularly in communities affected by health
disparities or lacking access to crucial resources. That’s why we are here to
empower faith communities as they become changemakers in helping their
communities thrive – physically, mentally, and spiritually.

Sunday School will start promptly at 9:30 a.m.,
opening with Joys and Concerns.
We will finish the “Knowing God” series on August 4 & 11, then begin a
follow-up series - “God is Faithful:”
At the heart of the Bible's story is a relationship between God and
people, sparked by God's initiative, sustained by God's promise, and
sealed in covenant terms. Come, track the narrative as God holds
steady while the people struggle to keep faith and fulfill their mission
in God's world. The covenant relationship is explored from Abraham
through Moses, David, and the Prophets, up to Jesus—calling us to
renew our place among God's loyal people.

Church News
Midway Christian Church has been invited to participate in a Wabash Grant Study Program!
The program is called “Dialogue in the ‘Purple Zone:’ A Pedagogy for Supporting Pastors and Lay Leaders in Preaching and Civil Discourse” and is part of a Wabash grant to study Pedagogies for Social Justice and Civic Engagement. Heather McColl and Sandy Gruzesky are part of twenty individuals taking part in this year-long program of training, mentoring, and congregational assessment. The cohort will be convened by Rev. Dr. Leah Schade, Assistant Professor of Preaching and Worship at LTS, in consultation with Rev. Dr. Loida Martell, Dean and Vice President for Academic Affairs, the core faculty at LTS, and four other colleagues in the fields of homiletics, civil discourse, religion and social change, and sociology.
This program will focus on equipping pastors and lay leaders to engage their congregations in public conversations about challenging social issues. Heather and Sandy will be learning the “sermon-dialogue-sermon” method Rev. Dr. Schade has developed which includes a method of civil discourse called deliberative dialogue. After the training, they will have the opportunity to implement the process at Midway Christian Church with ongoing guidance and mentoring.
As part of the assessment process in this program, a congregational survey will be administered prior to the training seminar. We will be distributing the link to this survey to Midway Christian Church’s members. Look for this sometime in August.
Fall Series - “Talking With God: Questions Which Shape Our Faith”
As people of faith, we know that we are called to be in relationship with God, but
let’s face it, this relationship is complicated. Sometimes we have more questions
than answers. Sometimes we wonder where God is in the midst of the broken-
ness, while at other times, we know with certainty God’s Spirit is surrounding us.
So this fall, using Brian McLaren’s book ”A New Kind of Christianity” as our guide,
we will be exploring some of the questions of our faith.

Worship & Wonder
Who? There are two trained roles within worship and wonder: Storyteller and Greeter. Storytellers share the stories of God. Greeters are there to support the children and storyteller.
What? Worship and Wonder tells the stories from Hebrew people, Life of Jesus, & Early church. They are told using three dimensional, plain but beautiful sacred objects and human figures that are carved from wood.
Children are helped to form images of scripture by receiving the story in visual and motor ways that allow kinesthetic, visual and auditory thinking to happen. The use of movement and underlays is essential for focusing the children's attention on the place that will become the context for the story. These draw both storyteller and children into the story.

From Dottie Pollard’s Granddaughter:
“To My Midway Christian Church Family and Friends:
Thank you so much for the generous gift basket for my gradua-
tion from Lexington Catholic High School. The basket was a very
welcome surprise. I will put the cash to good use and definitely
enjoy the gift cards which were to my favorite places. Unfortu-
nately, my sister and brother saw the basket before I did and ate
most of the candy. I will always hold a special place in my heart
for Midway Church as I have fond memories of helping my Mimi
(Dottie Pollard) prepare communion as a little girl.
Again, thank you so much for your generosity.”
