MeasurementIn science, the Metric system is used. It is a universal measurement system
based on multiples of 10.This makes conversions from one unit
to another much easier.
Measurement Musts
• Use the right basic unit•Measure with the right
accuracy• Estimate one place• ALWAYS write your units
METRIC M K H Dk BASE d c m u
M= Mega Meter d= DeciK= Kilo Liter c= CentiH=Hecto Gram m=
MilliDk= Deka u=
Micro
Basic Units
•Volume = liters (L)• Length = meters (m)•Mass = grams (g)
Accuracy• Measure using the lab equipment that
gives you the most accuracy– Ex: beaker vs. graduated cylinder
Estimating
• Always estimate one place past the accuracy of a measuring device.
• Ex: The smallest unit on this ruler is millimeters (mm).
We would measure to the millimeter, and estimate to the 1/10ths place

Graduated Cylinders
• Measure to the bottom of the meniscus

Conversion of Temperatures

• Celsius to Fahrenheit: F=Cx9/5+32
