Chinese visitors are ‘wowed’ by North Devon
North Devon could expect an increase in
Chinese visitors this summer following a visit by
the Chinese media. In April, North Devon
Council’s economic development team hosted a
visit by a team of five Chinese journalists to
promote the area as a tourist and English
language school destination.
The visit was funded by the South West Tourism Growth Fund, a
government initiative to attract more overseas visitors to the South
West.
The journalists, from publications including Shanghai Morning Post and
the Beijing Times, spent one of their five days in North Devon before
moving on to Plymouth, Bournemouth, Exeter and Bristol.
The group spent the night at The Habit boutique hotel in Ilfracombe
before taking in the harbour, Verity, St Nicholas Chapel and enjoying an
ice cream on the seafront. Next on the agenda was a trip to Country
Cousins language school in Bicclescombe Park and then on to meet a
host family. The group then moved on to Woolacombe and North
Devon School of English in Barnstaple, concluding with a town heritage
tour.
Councillor Pat Barker, Executive Member for Economic Development at
North Devon Council, said: “It’s really exciting to think about the impact
this visit could have on North Devon’s tourism. Their papers have huge
circulation in China and they have literally hundreds of thousands of
followers on social media. Everywhere they went that day, they were
taking photos and tweeting about their experience and our team
received some great feedback from them. I’m really pleased we were
successful in our request for them to visit our district and I hope they
tell everyone in China what we already know – that North Devon is
fantastic!”

Devon, visit www.country-cousins.com or www.ndse.co.uk

North Devon car park charges increased
Charges for North Devon Council owned car parks
increased in May following a district-wide review of
parking. The charges have been reviewed as part of
a strategy to ease congestion and simplify the cost of
parking across the district. The main changes are:
all car parks will be charged from 8am to 6pm
a 10p per hour increase in short stay car parks, rising to 20p per
hour increase after four hours
some car parks will no longer be covered by new long stay permits
long stay car park charges will increase by 10p per day
long stay car parks will be free on Sundays
North Devon Council Leader, Councillor Des Brailey, said: “Putting our
parking charges up is not a decision we’ve taken lightly. The charges have
remained the same for six years with the running costs steadily increasing
year on year.”

Hello Readers,
This month I am going to talk briefly about internet speeds.
I have covered this a little previously, but today we will talk about the
different types and how to check if you are getting what you pay for. So,
firstly, do you know what your connection speed should be? At work we
have Fibre Optic and at home we have ADSL, and we get simultaneous
upload and download of 100 Mbps. Your standard home connection
generally doesn't deliver that, eg you may get up to 20 Mbps and an upload
of 2. So when you run a speed test it should say 20 Mpbs download and 2
Mbps upload. How do you check? Go to www.speedtest.net and run the
test.
You can also check your local exchange to find out the different type of
connection you may be able to get, eg https://www.samknows.com/ click on
“UK Broadband availability” in the blue box at the top and then from the left
side “Exchange search” then type your town name and see what you get. If
you are not getting the speed you are paying for contact your provider and
ask for some help as they may be able to resolve it. However, be aware,
they often use the term “up to”. So you will get UP TO 20 Mbps.
Don't be afraid to change companies either. You can get some great deals
now for the internet but you will have to shop around. Check
http://www.uswitch.com/broadband/ for a better idea what you can get in
your area. Be careful about the contract length as they tend to try and push
an 18 month contract now which you may not want to be signed up to.
The best thing I can suggest is for you to ask your neighbours and friends
locally. They will probably have horror stories but you may also find
someone who is delighted with the service, speed and reliability. And don’t
be afraid to ask providers for more information, eg price guarantees, speed,
reliability and uptime promises. If you are having major problems, you have
made a complaint, and you still don’t have a solution, contact OFCOM
http://consumers.ofcom.org.uk/complain/phone-and-broadband-complaints/
Next month I am going to talk about WiFi repeaters and how systems can
be improved to give better coverage. As usual, if you have any questions,
please send me an email, Andy at [email protected]

The Brendon Sing takes place at the
Stag Hunters Inn on the
3rd Saturday of each month.
The Brendon Sing has become something
of an institution on Exmoor. It is not a club,
or a formally organised event, other than the
fact that it happens on the 3rd Saturday of
each month, and has done for more than 40
years. Local folk, visitors, and friends who
travel often considerable distances, come to
join in. Over the years many characters have
shared their wares with us, some sadly no
longer here, and the booklet which is for sale
will, I hope, go a way to keep alive a few of
the songs, and the memories. Thank you.
Martyn Babb
All the money from the sale of the songbook will go to
support the “BRENDON DEFIBRILLATOR
FUND” and The E.N.P.A. Trust “CAREMOOR”.
Production costs of the booklet have been met thanks
to the support of the Exmoor National Park’s Lynton
Pavilion Heritage Project.

Pleasure Dome Theatre launches this
summer bringing exceptional open-air
entertainment to The Valley of the Rocks
Macbeth 2nd to 20th August
What do we want to do? The aim of Pleasure Dome Theatre is to bring exceptional
open-air entertainment to both the community and holiday makers of Exmoor. We are
an artistic collective who aim to utilise the dramatic and beautiful scenery of The Valley of
The Rocks near Lynton, making Exmoor a cultural destination as well as a tourist hub. We
will provide outreach programmes and will offer local opportunities to work within a
professional company to aspiring youngsters and enthusiastic older members of the locale
alike.
This is the first time that Lynton Council has given permission for a production of this
nature to be performed at The Valley of The Rocks. For our first production this summer
2016 we aim to use 7 actors multi-rolling to tell the story of Shakespeare's Macbeth, the
themes of which, specifically ambition and greed, have never been more timely.
The production will run from 2nd August until 20th at 7:30pm with no shows on Mondays
and Sunday matinees at 3:00 with concessionary rates.

The energy and enthusiasm radiated by James Tucker is enough to
power a small town. However, he has chanelled it into giving us a fantastic
week starting with the vintage car rally on the Manor Green on June 11. The
Town Hall is also hosting an incredible Pink Floyd tribute band: 'I Floyd' there
are still a few tickets left for this but they are going fast so rock down to the
'Studio' while they still have some left. But that's not all! Several venues have
some great bands lined up including the 'Crown', the 'Bath Hotel', The 'Village
Inn', the 'Cottage' and, of course, 'Old Geezer, Plays Guitar' who will be
busking all over the flippin' place. Rumour has it that spending the winter
playing with himself at home has resulted in him inventing mistakes in all bits
of his song. (He's revolutionising the busker scene by asking people to give
him money NOT to play.) He is hoping that he can raise a vast sum of money
by agreeing not even to appear in public with or without his guitar. Long
suffering wife, Ivy says 'I don't want him hanging around the house getting
bored' and suggests that he should be paid to play on Lundy where he will
doubtless cause the rats to hurl themselves off the towering cliffs in a
desperate attempt to escape their tormentor.
I hope I'm not going on too much about Razor down at the 'Village'
but I really feel he deserves yet another mention for the sheer hard work,
energy and vast amount of money that he is putting behind our amazing music
scene. Over the last few weeks we have been treated to some great bands
such as 'Lion Star Reggae','Reigning Dogs' and 'Old Number Seven'. He is
keeping up the pace right through the summer and has got some great bands
lined up for us.
I really enjoyed 'Old Number Seven' They are fronted by an amazing
girl singer who, together with a superb jazz influenced guitarist and an expert
rhythm section made every song sound fresh and exciting. They completely
contradicted those bigotted critics who think a song should be played as near
as possible to the original. They showed that a true artist uses the subject to
express himself through, and adding something to the song in the process.
The best ever jazz singer, Ella Fitzgerald, always performed songs written by
other people. One of the greatest and most prolific songwriters, Cole Porter,
once said that he had never realised just how good his songs were until he
heard Ella sing them.

The next event to be held at the Centre is a Spring Activity

be a variety of activities for children to enjoy, including pony rides for

Some of you may have seen on local TV news that a man called Michael

Exmoor Pony Centre, he decided to learn how to ride and aims to take

North Devon Hospice benefits from recycling scheme
The North Devon Crematorium has secured a
donation for North Devon Hospice, thanks to its
role in a national recycling scheme. The hospice is
set to receive £4,444 from the proceeds of the
scheme, which enables metals from cremated
remains to be safely recycled. The scheme is run
by the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management and is only
carried out with the consent of the bereaved. As well as generating funds
for charitable giving the scheme also helps to reduce harmful pollutants
being buried in the ground.
North Devon Hospice is a local charity providing specialist care and
support to patients and families affected by cancer or other life-limiting
illnesses. More information about the charity can be found on their

Lyn Health Medical and Minor Injury Services News
Guests who have forgotten their medications In a joint venture with Lynton
Chemist the Surgery has recently produced a leaflet which has been emailed out to the
local guest houses and hotels from the Tourist Information Centre. This leaflet contains
information on what your guests can do in the event they have come away for their
break without their medication. We hope this will help our local visitors to get hold of
emergency supplies as soon as possible.
Repeat Prescriptions As a reminder, we do not accept requests for repeat
prescriptions over the telephone. You can order using the online system, via Lynton
Chemist or at the surgery using your repeat prescription printout. If you do not have
this, a note including your name, address, date of birth and details of the medication
requested can be dropped into the surgery for processing. Also please allow 2 working
days between ordering your prescription and collecting it from Lynton Chemist.

Hayfever Season Yes it’s that time of year again when, for some, the suffering begins.
However, you don’t need to see the doctor for hayfever symptoms or for medication
prescriptions. Pharmacies are able to give advice and many treatments are available over
the counter for little cost.
Ticks Ticks carry a bacterial infection that can lead to Lyme disease, although this is
very rare. Be aware of symptoms of Lyme disease as it can be serious if it is left
untreated. If you have been bitten by a tick, it should be removed as soon as possible.
Symptoms of Lyme disease can be present up to a year after the initial contact. If you
have any concerns then please phone the surgery or see our Minor Injuries Unit.
Updating our Records We are currently reviewing our patient contact information in
order to improve the way we communicate. When visiting the surgery we would be
grateful if you could provide us with any mobile phone numbers and email addresses you
have so that we can ensure our information is correct. We are looking to use text
messaging and emails for health promotion and reminders so please let us know if you
DO NOT wish us to contact you in this way.
Photographs We now have the ability to attach a photograph to our patient records
which can be extremely helpful in ensuring the correct patient is sitting in front of the
Clinician, particularly when patients have similar or, in some cases, the same name. This
facility has been hugely successful in areas where patients are not as well known to their
GP in reducing fraudulent access. We are still exploring how we can facilitate obtaining a
photo but if you would like to lead the way you can email a photo of yourself to
[email protected] as an attachment along with your name, address and date of
birth.
