In February, we celebrate Valen-tine’s Day and Black History Month. We are pleased that this issue has a little bit of both. You will find inspirational stories of uncondi-
tional love. We also highlight a great, un-sung African-American hero and his love of faith and ideas.
Please take time to review the calendar in this issue, as well as, the ever growing cal-endar of events on the website http://www.cityofpraisechurch.com.
The City of Praise has had a busy winter. Co-Pastor Ylawnda launched The King-dom Queens series with a power lunch-eon attended by hundreds of women from throughout the region. We have had doz-ens of Christian entertainers and leaders of the faith share with our ministry.
As always, we are blessed to be on this journey of faith with you.

loveno greater love than this
In 1953, a young kid from Brook-lyn, richie Manning, found him-self halfway around the globe in Korea sitting in a foxhole with one of his best friends from home ray Brennan. The two boys, barely men, were used to doing everything together. As kids in Brooklyn, they bought their first car together. They went to college together and when they enlisted in the army, they did that together too.
one night as they sat in a fox-hole in Korea, thousands of miles from Brooklyn, they reminisced about home. As they shared laughs and a Her-shey bar, a live grenade came across the barricade. ray Bren-nan looked at the grenade, looked at richie and winked before throwing himself on the grenade to protect his friend.
richie Manning survived be-cause of ray Brennan’s amaz-ing sacrifice. After the war, richie Manning cared for ray’s
mother as if she were his own. one evening as the two sat sharing tea, richie asked the old woman if she believed that ray loved him. she walked up to him with her finger point-ed to his face and struggling through the closest thing to an-ger that richie had seen from her. she said, “Don’t you ever, ever ask such a stupid question again. of course he loved you. He gave his life for you. What more could he have done?”
To honor the sacrifice of his friend, richie Manning changed his first name to Brennan. Today Brennan Manning is one of the most celebrated Christian au-thors in the world. Among his many books are Abba’s Child, and The Ragamuffin Gospel. In his books and his lectures, he shares the simple truth of the un-conditional love of Jesus Christ.
on occasion, you and I may become confused and won-der if God really does love us.
This question is sometimes born of the drudge and strug-gles that are life. Health chal-lenges, financial challenges, family challenges can confuse our thinking into believing that we are not loved. But then we remember John 15:13 – Greater love has no one than this that he lay down his life for his friends.
Can we even comprehend the magnitude of this love? Je-sus the son of God loved us so much that he bore the cost of our sins, so that we might actu-ally have life and have it more abundantly. Because of this great sacrifice, we get more than a new name. We get a new life.
How will you choose to use this gift to honor the one who gave it to you?
no GrEATEr LoVEFor God so loved the world that he gave his only son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. -John 3:16
But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. -romans 5:8
I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me. - Galatians 2:20

Robert Russa Moton
The legacy of one of the most influential leaders in American history lives on through his faith and ideas.
obert Russa Moton is one of the most influential lead-ers of the 20th Century and one of the least recognized lead-
ers of the 21st century. Born shortly after the Civil War, Mo-ton inherited a world that richly carried the hallmarks of slavery.
Even though it was illegal to do so, his mother had taught herself to read during slavery. She was determined that Robert would learn as well. There-fore, from the very beginning, Robert Russa Moton placed high value on education. He worked difficult jobs to save enough money to attend Hamp-ton University where he met his friend and mentor Booker T. Washington.
Moton would go on to serve as President of both Hampton University and Tuskegee Institute. He would be called on to advise five
U.S. Presidents. Moton’s life was marked with victories and defeats. He was chosen to give the keynote ad-
dress at the opening ceremony of the Lincoln Memorial. After his speech, he was
required to return to sit in the “colored” sec-
t i o n .

NOVEMBER 2012
When he retired in 1935 because of his great commitment to serving young people, the corporate community gave him the resources to build Holly Knoll, a Georgian style manor on the banks of the Cappahosic Riv-er in Gloucester, Va. Coveted were the invitations from Moton, which simply read, “Come to Cappahosic.” At Cappahosic the greatest Afri-can American minds met to solve the problems of the day. The idea for the National Urban League was born from conversations at Holly Knoll.
Moton was a man who had a strong faith in human kind and an even stronger faith in God Almighty. As one of the most influential leaders in American history, he did not compromise his faith in Christ. It was the compass from which all other decisions were made.
Today in his honor, The Gloucester Institute found-ed by Charles and Kay James has renovated Holly Knoll and they continue the legacy of faith and ideas.
