The monthly competition, the Monthly

TEETALK/GOLF TIPS
Andrew KayTEETALKwith Andrew Kay
Drive for Show-Putt for Dough
This is so t rue. A lot o f people ask
me, Andrew w hy am I a lousy putter?
The first thing I ask them is, How oftendo you prac tice your putting? You
ca n proba bly guess wha t the a nswer is
going to be. Not very often.
Considering you are going to use
this club (putter) on almost every hole
and most likely about 36 times during
your round, I think it makes a lot of
sense to go to the practice green and
work on your putting. If you are having
more than 30 putts per round, you
seriously need to work on your putting.
Think ab out this-if you are a lousy
putter you are proba bly not too hot
with the chipping either. If you can t
chip the b all c lose, then you put a lot
of p ressure on yo ur putting.
OK so if you improve your ball
striking and hit more greens in regulation
(par 3 on in one shot, par 4 on in two shots, etc.) then you don t need to p rac tice
your chipping, only your putting. The reality
is the a verage go lfer will not hit a lot of
greens in regulation [GIR]. Even the
best players in the world average about
70% GIR per round . That s about 13 GIR
per round. So w hy are they a ble to chip
and putt so often and save pars. Because
they work hard on their short game.
From my e xperience a s a player
and as a c oac h, the quickest wa y to
improve your scoring is to work hard on
your short game.
We have 2 putting g reens and 2
chipp ing greens at Kota Perma i. The
putting green and chipping green at
the driving range are floodlit all night so
you have the op portunity to prac tice .
Why dont you spend more time
this month working on your chipping
and putting a nd see if your scores
come d own. I think you will be surprisedat the results.
We also have a three hour short
ga me lesson pa ckag e a t the Golf
Aca dem y which I enco urag e
everyone to take p art in if you are
serious ab out lowering your scores.
During the 3 hours we work on all
aspects of your short game. We will
also give you a 20% discount on the
three hour short gam e pac kage , until
the end of March.
We a re here to help you improve
your golf so c ome down a nd see us.
Even if you just want to ask a question
ab out your ga me-we a re here to help.

Recently, I wa s asked b y one o f the lady
memb er of the club, what happ ens
when the b all she was playing b reak into
pieces as a result of a stroke. Is there apena lty and ca n she replac e the b all?
The last p aragrap h to Rule 5.3
provides the a nswe r.
If a ball breaks into pieces as a result of
a stroke, the stroke is cancelled and the
player must play a ball, without penalty,
as near a s possible a t the spot from
which the original ball was played
Failure to do so, the player will incur
two p ena lty strokes in stroke p lay and
loss of hole in match play.
A b a ll is unfit fo r play if it is visibly c ut,
crac ked or out of shape and the p layer
ca n replac e the ba ll provided he
ob serves the proper proc ed ures as
follows:-
1. If a player has reasons to believe that
his ball has become unfit for play during
play o f the hole, he may lift the ball,
without penalty, to determine whethe r it
is unfit. Before lifting, the player must
announce his intention to his oppo nent
or fellow competitor, marked the ball, liftand examine it, allows his oppo nent or
fellow competitor to examine the ball,
observe the lifting and replacement of
the ball.
2. The ball must not be c leaned when
lifted under this rule.
3. Failure to co mp ly with the p roc edures
ab ove, the playe r incurs a p enalty of
one stroke.
4. If it is de termined tha t the ba ll has
become unfit for play during play of the
hole, the p layer may substitute a nother
ba ll, plac ing it on the spo t where the
original ba ll lay. Otherwise, the original
ball must be replaced.
5. If a player substitutes a ball when not
pe rmitted and ma kes a stroke a t the
wrong ly substituted ba ll, he incurs the
general penalty of Rule 5-3 asmentioned above.

The c lub

the Gala Night was undoubtedly the

a g ood time tog ether.
There are ma ny wa ys for a c lub to
