Real Kashmir humble Mohun Bagan by 2-1, keep title hopes alive in maiden season

KOLKATA, Jan 6:

Real Kashmir humbledheavyweights Mohun Bagan by2-1 and the giant-killing act, oneof many engineered by the debu-tantes in the ongoing I-League,kept their title hopes alive, heretoday.

The win against a profligateMohun Bagan helped RealKashmir, the first team from thevalley to play in India's top-flight, continue their fairy talerun.

The team's sixth victory wasachieved on the back of a braceby Mason Robertson, who struckin the 33rd and 74th minute atthe Salt Lake Stadium.

Starting as a defender,Scottish Robertson, who wasrecruited by his father and coachof the club David Robertson,dominated the game to hand theformer champions a second suc-cessive defeat.

League winning star wingerSony Norde, who made a come-back after missing four matchesdue to his leg injury, scored thesolitary goal for the home side inthe 42nd minute.

"Today's win is because ofdedication and hard work ofeveryone at RKFC. The boyswere exceptional and I am surethat the spirit continues as webegin our final uphill task," saidSandeep Chattoo, co-owner ofReal Kashmir Football Club

NAGROTA Jan 6: NationalConference provincial presi-dent Devender Singh Ranatoday said that rural sports con-tinue to remain popular and rel-evant with youngsters whichare reflected by their evergrowing participation.

"It is heartening to watch

our youngsters from NagrotaAssembly constituency takinglead role in organizing andplaying sports like Volleyball,Badminton, Kabaddi, Tug ofWar, Long Jump etc in a bigway", Mr Rana said at the con-cluding function of DistrictSports Meet, organized byRural Development Form, aNon GovernmentalOrganisation, at Bhatyari inBlock Dansal.

Sports persons from 15Panchayats of Dansal Blockparticipated in various events,which were witnessed by alarge number of sports-loversfrom all over the Constituency.

While Kapotha teams wonthe keenly contested Volleyballand Kabaddi matches, Bhatyariteams triumphed in Tug of Warand Badminton events. TheKanyala players won the LongJump competition.

Complimenting the partici-pating teams and congratulatingthose who won various events,Rana expressed happiness overthe constituency emerging as ahub of sports activities in the

recent years, especially therural games and hoped the tal-ented ones will make their markat national and internationallevels. He stressed the need foradequate exposure to youthevincing interest in varioussports competitions, sayingtheir love and passion for thegames is admirable.

ings and facilities for the ruralyouth to demonstrate their tal-ent and capabilities.

JP World School celebrates 12thAnnual Day ‘Dharohar’

JAMMU, Jan 6: JP WorldSchool celebrated its 12th AnnualDay, ‘Dharohar’ with pomp andshow at Abhinav Theatre, heretoday.

The programme was a mes-sage to the mass for preservationof the Mother Earth, in the formof a musical drama. The studentsshowcased their talent in a bedaz-zling way.

Member of Parliament JugalKishore Sharma was the chiefguest on the occasion, whileVikram Randhawa, MLC Jammuand Padmashree Balwant Thakurwere the guests of honour.

The event began with wel-coming of the guests, their floralfelicitation and the ceremoniallamp-lighting, followed bySaraswati Vandana.

The main highlight of the daywas a musical drama to educatethe audience about the injusticewe are doing to our Mother Earth.

The narrative enacted by thestudents was an eye-opener forthe audience & held the audiencein awe & left them enlightened asthe show culminated. The juniorstudents of the school presented adance performance, ‘Fiesta’ &left everyone jovial.

The show involved most ofthe students of the school in spec-tacular performances enrichedwith rich music, costumes &dance.

JS Hundal, Principal of theSchool, presented the annualreport, focusing on the school’sachievements- both Scholastic &Co-scholastic, which wereapplauded by the assemblage.

The Annual Prize Distributionfunction was a moment of pridefor all the winners & achievers ofthe school as they were honouredfor their academic & otherachievements.

Prajwal Gupta was conferredwith ‘Student of the Year Award’for scoring 95.8% marks & forbeing J&K topper in 12th classboard exams (Non-Medicalstream).

The school conferred the‘Sidharth Basu Award’ to AaravVaid & Sohail-ur-Rehman, forexcelling in Quiz competitions.Harshika Jethi was awarded withthe “Sonal Mansingh Award’ forshowing brilliant performance incultural programmes. Syed MariaGeelani was given ‘MahatmaGandhi Award’ for being anexcellent public speaker. Forshowing brilliance in science,Haider Ali was awarded the‘Einstein Award’. The‘Aryabhatta Award’ was given toAbhay Sharma for his excellent

performance in Mathematics. Forpossessing great debating skills,Wasif Tak was conferred with the‘Abraham Lincoln Award’. Themost coveted, ‘Cock HouseTrophy’ was bagged by the RaviHouse for excelling in all theInter-House activities.

The prizes were given awayby Jugal Kishore Sharma, VikramRandhawa and Balwant Thakur.

The vote of thanks was pre-sented by the Head Girl of theSchool, Tamanna Gupta. Theevent culminated with the singingof the National Anthem.

India on course for historic series win

SYDNEY, Jan 6:

Fickle weather on day fourprevented India from closing inon a big win in the fourth Testbut they were well on course fortheir maiden series victory inAustralia after forcing the hoststo follow-on at home for the firsttime since 1988.

Bad light and intermittedrain led to substantial loss ofplay with only 25.2 oversbowled on day four.

Australia were placed at 6-0in 4 overs after Kuldeep Yadav'sfive-wicket haul in his maidenTest Down Under helped Indiabowl the home team out for 300in the first innings.

Umpires took players off thefield with eight minutes remain-ing in the belated afternoon ses-sion. Marcus Harris (2) andUsman Khawaja (4) were theunbeaten batsmen with Australiastill trailing by 316 runs.

But play didn't resume at allonce the scheduled tea breakwas over, as bad light hamperedproceedings once again. Theumpires waited for nearly anhour, coming out for inspectionin between, before making adecision at 5 pm local time.

The match officials wereready to wait until 6 pm for lightto improve, but a slight drizzleput paid to the wait and the daywas called off at 5.20 pm localtime. (PTI)

JAMMU, Jan 6: FormerCommissioner JammuMunicipal Corporation (JMC)and former Secretary J&KState Sports Council was elect-ed as the President of Jammuand Kashmir GymnasticsAssociation (JKGA) for theterm of four years in the elec-tions of the J&K GymnasticsAssociation held at AmarSingh Club, here today.

Wattal is a sports promoterand himself is a regular playerof Badminton, besides havingdistinction of representingPunjabi University in Bodybuilding and Weightlifting,

Ravi Singh, DivisionalSports Officer, Jammu andAshok Singh, Manager M AStadium were the observersfrom J&K State SportsCouncil, while NarinderMohan was the observer fromGymnastics Federation ofIndia. Dushyant Sharma,President J&K OlympicAssociation (JKOA) and ProfAshutosh Sharma, GeneralSecretary were also present inthe meeting, while KuldeepSingh Jamwal, President RifleShooting Association of J&Kwere the observers fromJKOA.

Earlier, Ashutosh Sharmaproposed the name of MrWattal for the post ofPresident, while Sunil Sharmaseconded it. After unanimouslyelection of the President, thehouse authorised the newlyelected President to nominate /elect the team of other office

bearers of JKGA in consulta-tion with the other seniormembers and International &National medallists inGymnastics.

Meanwhile, the newlyelected President of theAssociation, Kiran Wattalthanked the members for hav-ing faith in him and electinghim as head of the Association.

He also thanked the out-going President Sheikh FazalAhmed and General Secretary,Ajit Singh Wazir for their time-ly decision to go ahead for thefurther promotion ofGymnastics in the J&K State.

He said that he will leaveno stone unturned in improv-ing the standard of Gymnasticsin Jammu and Kashmir andraising its infrastructure.

He also lavished praise onGymnastics coaches speciallyKrupali Singh and SP Singh inraising standard of the game.

He mentioned that in theYear 2018 only Gymnasts ofthe State have won 47 medalsincluding 21 Gold, 15 Silverand 11 Bronze medals for theState in various National levelcompetitions.

Senior InternationalGymnast Manvinder Singhtold the house that Wattal hasdone great job during histenure as Secretary SportsCouncil by improving infraand organising many tourna-ments in the downtown areasof Valley.

The other prominent mem-bers who attended the meetingwere Vijay Saraf, DeepakHanda, Vikas Gupta, RCChib, Adarash Pal Gupta,Manish Gupta, RavinderSingh International Atheleteand Romesh Mahajan, vicepresident of JKOA were alsopresent.

JAMMU, Jan 6: ChiefSecretary, BVR Subrahmanyamtoday lauded Jammu andKashmir Police and described itone of the best forces in the coun-try which is workingin difficult situationsto maintain law andorder and ensure safe-ty of people.

Speaking at theconcluding ceremonyof 5-day Police Inter-Zone Sports Meet-2018, organized atGulshan Ground heretoday, the ChiefSecretary saidGovernment is awareof the problems anddifficulties of Policeforce and severalsteps for their welfarehave been taken bythe Governor'sAdministration. He said an effi-cient mechanism has been put inplace to address their issues onpriority.

Chief Secretary said MirCommittee constituted to suggestmeasures to be initiated for thewelfare of Police, includingspeedy disposal of promotioncases, seniority and creation ofmore posts in different cadres forcareer progression is being exam-ined for implementation. He said8000 posts in several higherranks have been created to openthe avenues of promotions forpolice personnel.

He said Government hasalready announced a housingscheme for the families of thepolice personnel and initially10000 housing units will be con-structed each at Jammu andSrinagar for which the work willstart soon. These units will beprovided to the families of needypolice personnel on reasonableand affordable prices, he said andadded that the Government isalso considering sanctioning asubstantial risk allowance for thePolice Personnel keeping in viewthe working conditions of theforce.

The Chief Secretary appreci-ated the efforts of DGP for organ-izing this big sports bonanza andsaid that sports are must for keep-

ing the Police personnel mentallyand physically fit and called fororganizing such events on regularbasis. He said such events pro-vide opportunities to the playersto exhibit their talent in differentsports activities and help in

boosting their moral which leadthem to perform their duties moreefficiently.

In his welcome address, DGPDilbag Singh informed that asmany as 930 sportspersons of sixzones, including 775 men and155 women participated in thisinter-zone sports meet-2018. Italso includes 38 gazetted officerswho participated in differentsports events. The games whichwere played in the meet includedBoxing, Hockey, Kabaddi,Athletic, Handball, Shooting,Football, Basketball,Weightlifting, Archery, Wrestling,Tug of War and Judo etc.

He said the PoliceDepartment organizes suchsports events for its personnel atdifferent places across the Stateto refresh the minds and brains ofthe jawans. He said games are thepart of the service which pro-vides opportunity to the individu-als and as teams to perform onground and display their skills indifferent events which booststheir morale. He congratulated tothe winners and complimented toall those participated in the eventand showing their enthusiasmstowards the sports. He calledupon the police functionaries tomaintain discipline while playingas well as performing their pro-

fessional duties on ground.The DGP expressed gratitude

to the Chief Secretary for gracingthe occasion and attending issuesof the Police force on priority. Hesaid active Government supportto the Police help in boosting the

moral of the force which help inimproving their performance onground.

The overall men trophy wasclinched by the Armed zonewhile as overall women trophywas won by Training Zone. RamRaj of Jammu Zone who securedthree Gold and one Silver Medalswas adjudged best AthleteWinner in men's section whileSeema Devi of Armed Zone wasdeclared best Athlete Winner inWomen's Section for securingtwo Gold and one Silver Medals.

The Chief Secretary and DGPdistributed the prizes and tro-phies among the winners of thevarious events.

Divisional Commissioner,Jammu, Sanjeev Verma,Secretary Youth Services &Sports and Information, SarmadHafeez and several senior andretired police officers, besideslarge number of sports personsand spectators were present onthe occasion.

Running Archery Cup was liftedby LSRC Red with the score of364 points, while as Skara Redwith 348 points and LSRC Bluewith 322 points bagged secondand third position respectively.

Delex Angchuk of Skara Redwith 115 points was declaredfirst while as Tsering Spalgon ofLSRC Red with 107 points andR. Chosgyal of Skara Blue with97 points secured second andthird positions individually.

Organized by Sporting ClubStakna, 16 archery teams partic-ipated in the tournament atStakna village today.

IISM Gulmarg completes1st Ski Course

JAMMU, Jan 6: IndianInstitute of Skiing &Mountaineering (IISM) atGulmarg completed its firstWinter Ski Course today inwhich 80 students from variousparts of the country participated.

Dr Syed Hanief Balkhi,Chief Executive Officer,Gulmarg DevelopmentAuthority, was the chief guest.He gave away the certificatesand prizes to the winners of var-ious events in the course.

Principal IISM, JS Dhillonwelcomed the chief guest andbriefed him about the develop-ment of the institute and variousactivities being undertaken by it.

Students from Delhi,Mumbai, Bangalore, Kerala,TN, U.P and other parts of thecountry including students fromKashmir completed the course.

"IISM will be conducting 05more skiing courses which havealready been booked by stu-dents. IISM is very popularInstitute of the Nation and plays

a very vital role to promotetourism in the State of J&K. Themain aim of these courses is todevelop a skill of skiing andgenerate employment opportuni-ties for the youth who want toengage in adventure tourism.These courses also help todevelop the personality of theparticipants through their expo-sure to challenging situations,"Dhillon said.

Earlier, winning the tossand batting first, Amar CricketClub scored a good total of179 runs in the stipulated 20overs, losing 8 wickets in theprocess. Rahul Sharma scoredquick-fire 89 runs off just 36balls, while Kavi Raj con-tributed 38 runs. From KrishnaCricket Club (KCC), Arun andGagan took 3 wickets each,

while Arush claimed 2 wick-ets.

In reply, KCC bundled outfor 121 runs to lose the amtchby 58 runs. Aryan (32) andGagan (30) were the mainscorers. From ACC, Mukeshtook 4 important wickets,while Raghu Raj and Billaclaimed 2 wickets each. RahulSharma was adjudged as theman of the match.

On the occasion, chiefguest gifted a new cricket matto the organisers for holdingthe tournaments in future also.
