Retrospective 1996-2010
“Art is in an age in which most any object can be referred to as sculpture in the name of Vanguardism. Before surrendering to
Vanguardism I have chosen to take after
sculptors for which I have great affinity. I
admire the works of Giacometti for his
minimalism, Bocchioni for the liveliness in his work, Marino Marini for his
horses, Kennet Armitage for the synthesis
of his figures, and naturally, I admire Henry
Moore for his reclining figures. Every one of them, in his own period and style left
behind works of art and a trade that cannot
be ignored in the name of Modernism and Vanguardism. Like them, I work with figures, the sensuality of volume, and the
ancient trade of lost-wax casting.“

The Fake Heroes Jorge Segui's sculptures are phenomenological reflections of the world. The se-
ries, "Fake Heroes", is an intimate search of humankind focused on the para-
digm of the Hero. The sculpture shapes a double-headed warrior over a double-
headed horse: a divided being and his mirror. A metaphor for the duplicity of
any great man. His "Fake Hero" exhibits the most infinite human duality. On one
side, there is the super human capable of the outmost, expressed in the stylish
and elegant posture of the warrior, calmly riding over his horse. On the other
side, there stands a duplicated double. In a figural sense, it is simple and daily
man riding over his horse. But both are "masked" with perforated eyes, hiding
their identities. Philosophical implications are merging. Segui presents his hero
with a double sided reality: on one side, there is greatness, braveness, and
strength in him; but on the other side, there is also fear and weakness. It is a
hero within his parallel two dimensions. Nevertheless, the artist's warrior firmly
stands up in a contemplative attitude prepared in high-spiritedness for his great
destiny and fate. It remains in us the Greek heroes of ancient times or legen-
dary knights of Medieval times.
These creatures incarnate the personal imagery of the artist. Their esthetics'
proportions are far beyond from the classical rules of Art History's academicism.
Segui created a personal system of proportions of elongated and gothic forms
and light volumes. He combines the optical power of sinuistic curves with hier-
atical vertical lines and pyramidal structures. The result is a harmonious compo-
sition of ethereal perspective full of sensuous rhythm.
The warrior's chest shows a peculiar icon of an Eye inside a mysterious Triangle,
esoteric symbol of the divine origin of the personage and the God's surveillance
for his epic son. A cape over the cavalryman connotating his high hierarchy. It
ends at the back 's horse in a winged shape giving the sculpture an ascending
illusory movement. The horseman does not have arms. Instead of it, he has
curved shields for an imaginary artillery battle.
