EmergencyAlertSystem
by2dLtLucMoens
DuringtheAircrewClinicheldat theJeffcoSquadronoffice on Feb. 5, 2011, theaQendees
enjoyed a special presenta(on by 1st Lt Leonard Ginther who took (me out off his busy
schedule to explain how the emergency alert system operates that ul(mately leads to the
ac(va(on of air and ground crews in varioustypes of missions. Ginther is oneof four Alert
Officers AO) for the COWGwho carry pagers
that respond to incoming cal ls from the
authori(esincaseemergenciesarise thatrequire
CAP assistance. These authori(es can include
the AFRCC or NOC, as well as calls from the
Sheriffs departmentoreven HomelandSecurity.
Asa qualifiedIncident Commander IC),Ginther
does theini(alevalua(onregardingthe needfor
a mission,andhastheresponsibilitytono(fythe
COWG,andtodispatchany local resourcesintheevent a missionis reallyneeded.Healsoalerts
regular ICs so that they can take immediate
ac(on.Inthecaseofa missingplane,itis normal
procedure for theAOto gather the latest weather andradar info, and tocontact the local
Sheriff.uiteunderstandably,becausethesealerts needaquickresponsewithinafewminutes,
Ginthers duty tends tobeverystressful duringthoseini(al fewminutes, evenmoresowhen
twoormoremissionsneedtobeorganizedandlaunchedsimultaneously.Therefore,he madeit
veryclearthatduringthosebusymomentshepreferstocommunicateonlywithasmallgroup
ofpeoplewhoassisthim during thesecrucial moments. This helps himstay focusedonthe
challenges associated with launching missions without having to deal with a deluge of
distrac(ngphonecalls.
If assistance for a mission is needed from the Jeffco Squadron, Ginther sends out a page,
whereaeranAOwithinthesquadroncontactsanaircrewbasedontheAlertRoster inother
squadrons, the AO would also ac(vate a ground crew). Once the aircrew is ready, the AO
contactsGinther togeta further briefing onthemission status. Of course, it is the aircrew
members responsibility to respond immediately when called upon once his or her name
appearsatthetopoftheAlertRoster.
