An Introduction to Transference-Focused Psychotherapy and its Application to

Narcissistic Personality Disorder For mental health professionals

Main Presenter: Diana Diamond, PhDTransference-Focused Psychotherapy is grounded in contemporary

psychoanalytic theory since we believe that psychoanalytic thinking has much to offer in terms of understanding and treating personality disorders.

However, our approach includes specific modifications of technique to address the therapeutic needs of patients with borderline and other

personality disorders.

The Mentalizing Initiative Presents:

Diana Diamond, PhD is Professor Emerita in the Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology at the City University of New York, Professor of Clinical Practice at the New School for Social Research, and faculty at the

New York Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, the NYU Postdoctoral Program in Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis, and the Weill Medical College of Cornell University, where she is a senior fellow in the

Personality Disorders Institute. Her current research is on the treatment process and outcome with patients with co-morbid narcissistic and borderline disorders, and on changes in mental representations in borderline and narcissistic patients after one year of TFP. These clinical and research investigations have led to her most recent book, Treating Narcissistic Pathology with Transference-Focused Psychotherapy (with Frank Yeomans,

Barry Stern, and Otto Kernberg, Guilford Press, in press). She is a graduate of the New York University Postdoctoral Program in Psychoanalysis and the IPTAR training program in executive coaching and

organizational consultation. She is in private practice in psychoanalysis and individual and couple therapy in NYC. She is a member of the American Psychological Association, the board of directors of the Margaret

Mahler foundation, and past member at large of the board of directors of Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) APA.
