JAR is present at:
Kids Who Care: Fundraising for Furry Friends – JAR in the Shanghai Family magazine Year 7 student Cameron Lawrence loves
animals so much she took it upon herself
to raise money for Jaiya’s Animal Rescue
(JAR), a non-profit small animal rescue
group committed to protecting and
improving the health and welfare of
Shanghai’s animals.
“I just love animals and I hate to see
them mistreated. So I just want less to be
mistreated and more to be adopted. So I
just want to help them,” the 12-year-old
Australian-born, Shanghai-based
Lawrence says of her decision to raise
money for JAR.After finding two kittens
on the street and re-homing them,
Lawrence came across JAR and her
family got involved by fostering cats in
their Pudong home. Wanting to
contribute more to the cause, Lawrence
started collecting second-hand books to
sell at JAR’s adoption days.
We are issuing this newsletter monthly in
order to let you know about the
developments of JAR’s activities and our
lovely pets.
This fall, there are several ongoing JAR
fundraising activities.

TNR case Viola : You
can make it happen
No doubt you have noticed the
more friendly felines in your
neighborhood who even come to
you for a head rub.
Viola is such an example. She’s
always greeting my dog and me,
twining around my legs, waiting for
food and attention. It is very easy to
catch such a cat to have it
neutered or spayed. A little bit of
coaxing with food and in it goes in
the pet carrier.
What it took to spay Viola?
- A little bit of my time
- 300 RMB for spaying

WAPA (Wuxi Animal
Protection) rescued
nearly 600 caged cats
On July 24th and August 3rd, the
WAPA rescued nearly 600 caged
cats near Shanghai. The cats were
saved from cat nappers who were
planning to sell them to various
restaurants. The rescuers managed to
stop them on their way to
Guangdong. After hours of
negotiations in the heat with police
officers the cats were handed over to
the rescuers.
Many of the cats were starved and
injured, hiding in the corners in fear.
Since the cat base at the WAPA was
still under construction, the rescuers
had to fix up the location over night.
- Sick and injured cats were
separated from the healthy ones for
treatment.
- Male and Female cats were further
separated into groups.
All of the cats are now facing
medical fees including vaccinations,
neutering, flea treatments and food
to eat. The rescuers are trying to find
safe homes for the cats to go to.

The sad story of Sally
Walking through a pet market in Shanghai is often a
torture for every animal lover. It breaks your heart to
see many of the animals stuck together in tiny
cages, with not enough to eat and water to drink,
many of them obviously ill and/or on the brink of
death.
One of our volunteers recently rescued Sally from
such a pet market. When passing one of these awful
cages, she noticed a kitten lying motionless in the
corner. The rescuer started inquiring about the kitten
and was told to choose another one since this one
wasn’t eating anymore. There was a long discussion
with the vendor about the poor health of the kitten
and that it should be taken to a vet. Finally the
vendor angrily handed over the kitten for free and
told the rescuer to back off.
Sally was taken to the vet who declared her condition
life threatening. She was dehydrated, malnourished,
eyes terribly swollen due to infections, had swollen
kidneys and problems to hold her body temperature.
The following week was a week of fighting for Sally’s
life. Thanks to infusions, injections, eye ointment, force
feeding and of course a lot of TLC she recovered
slowly but steadily. Sally is now a happy and healthy
kitten waiting for her forever home.

OUR CHALLENGE
Every year thousands of animals are abandoned in China. Just like in many other developing
countries, this situation requires the attention and effort of several parties: government agencies,
NGOs, NPOs and more importantly: YOU!
Imagine how different this situation could be if more people were willing to open their homes to an
abandoned pet, if more animals were vaccinated, neutered and spayed, if more people made
donations, if more people were foster parents, if education on ethical treatment of animals could
reach everybody …
We at JAR have a great task ahead of us, but we cannot do it alone … WE NEED YOUR HELP!!!
