IR remote control dimmer is a device which is used to dime the light as per requirement.
It is microcontroller based device. It is controlled by IR remote. Today we are using many devices in our home
to improve our life and this is another example on how you can enhance a simple procedure like switching the lights on /off.
INTRODUCTION
DIMMER
Dimmers are devices used to vary the brightness of a light.
It is decreasing or increasing the RMS voltage and, hence, the mean power to the lamp.
It is possible to vary the intensity of the light output.
INFRARED
Infrared (IR) light is electromagnetic radiation with longer wavelengths than those of visible light.
Its wavelength ranges from 700nm-1mm.
Infrared radiation is used for short and medium range communications and control.
Some systems operate in diffuse mode also called scatter mode. This type of system can function when the source and destination are not directly visible to each other.
PIC 16F628 microcontroller is used.PIC16F628 is 8 bit microcontroller. It has program memory of 256.Data memory is 16(bytes). It has 4 i/o ports .
USED MICROCONTROLLER
Infra-Red light: cheapest way to remotely control a device within a visible range .
Almost all audio and video equipment are now controlled by IR.
IR CONTROL
IR MODULATION
Modulation: To make our signal stand out above the noise.
With modulation we make the IR light source blink in a particular frequency. (30– 60 KHz)
The IR receiver will be tuned to that frequency, so it can ignore everything else.
Detection Diode: IR signal is picked up. Amplifier & Limiter: Signal is amplified and limited by
the first 2 stages. The limiter acts as an AGC circuit to get a constant pulse level.
Band Pass Filter: Tuned to the modulation frequency of the handset unit.
Detector, Integrator and Comparator: To detect the presence of the modulation frequency. If this modulation frequency is present the output of the comparator will be low.
IR RECEIVER
IR remote control signal is implemented using microcontroller and its application is successfully demonstrated for home applications.
The system is quite cheap, reliable and easy to operate.
Due to use of MCU the work presented in this article can further be extended for web.
