INTRODUCTION
VanPacker refractory lined chimneys have been inuse since 1944. Our Model HT product, which was ULListed as a Medium Heat Appliance Chimney in 1957,uses a similar refractory mix to our earliest refractorylined chimneys. Underwriters Laboratory tested thecorrosion resistance of this product to pH2 in sulfur acidsand pH37 in mixed acids.
The Model HT product was originally designed toresist the corrosive atmospheres of appliances burningcoal and heavy fuel oils. But, as the shift to gas andlighter oil continued, appliances have become moreefficient and flue gas temperatures have become lowerwith many operating below acid dew points forconsiderable periods making refractory lining anexcellent choice for today’s appliances.
Since 1944 VanPacker chimneys have beendesigned to provide superior quality and maximum costeffectiveness. Our Model HT chimney has serviced boilerinstallations through those many years with provenperformance. We give a 1year warranty and offer anextended 15year warranty. For a long lasting, competitive price and easily installed chimney let VanPacker assist you with System Design, CorrosionAnalysis and Thermal Analysis.

GENERAL
VanPacker standard components are cylindrical, factorybuilt products made of acid resistant refractory encased insteel jackets. The wall thickness ranges from 2” to 6” depending on the diameter. The refractory material iscentrifugally cast in various lengths. Standard jacket materials are 26ga Aluminized steel and 11ga Galvanizedsteel. Other jacket materials are available on special order.
UL and ULC LISTING Medium Heat Appliance Chimney, Model HT: VanPacker Model HT is “Listed” by ULunder file number MH 7475 and by ULC under file number CMH 866 as “Medium Heat Appliance Chimneys” forcontinuous use at 1800ºF (983ºC) and for intermittent use at 2000ºF (1093ºC).
Enclosures: VanPacker Model HT chimneys are listed for enclosure within 1 to 2 hour fire rated walls (ratingdepends on local codes).
Acid Resistance: Model HT chimneys are made of a proprietary acid resistant refractory mixture. Undercomparable conditions, a VanPacker Model HT chimney will outlast an uninsulated carbon steel or stainless steelstack many times over.
Low Cost: VanPacker Model HT systems are slightly more expensive initially than unlined, uninsulated carbonsteel stacks; but will last many times longer. Prices are comparable with doublewall stainless steel chimneys.
Ease of Installation: VanPacker chimney sections are simple to install using internal lifters, joint sealant and asingle drawband. Only one simple butt joint required every four feet.
Factory Welded Units: VanPacker components with 11ga jackets are available in combination as factory weldedunits, reducing field installation time. Breechings, freestanding or other complicated units may be joined together atthe factory in sizes and weights acceptable for shipping and handling.
Codes & Standards: NFPA 211 & UL 959.
SIMPLE INSTALLATION
Individual sections are loweredinto place by means of a winch, crane, etc., and a sectionliftingdevice, which grips the chimneysection when liftingaction isapplied. Contact your VanPacker Representative forinformation on the sectionliftingdevice.
Sections are installed one atopanother using VanPacker jointsealant to provide a leakproof, acidproof seal. Silicone sealantis used when flue gastemperatures will remain below600ºF. Hightemp sealant isused when flue gastemperatures will exceed 600ºF.
VanPacker 8” wide 26gaaluminized steel drawbandsare installed and bolted tightlyto secure the joint. For heavygauge jackets, 11gagalvanized steel drawbandsare available or the joint maybe welded.

LINING SELECTION
VanPacker offers a wide range of refractory linings to meet specific applications. All are similar in construction tothe Model HT in that the refractory liner is encased in a steel shell. In most cases the sizes available are the sameas for the Model HT. In some cases, the thermal and corrosion analysis may require a greater wall thickness oradditional insulation thickness. In other cases, a membrane lining or other specialty coating is required.
The following is a listing of VanPacker Company’s standard linings, which have been developed for specialapplications.
MODEL HT is the standard UL and ULC listed product. It consists of a lightweight refractory aggregate bonded withcalcium aluminate cement. It is resistant to flue acids, as found in fuel oils and coal, and is for incineration at1800ºF where plastics content is low. When plastics content is above 3%, flue gas temperatures must remain below1600ºF to avoid disruption by alkalies. Flue temperatures must be kept above 500ºF to avoid corrosion due tocondensed flue gases, particularly hydrochloric acid.
MODEL HTplus is available in sizes from 10”ID to 60”ID. One inch of the standard HT refractory is replaced withinsulating board. Btu loss is reduced in heat recovery applications and surface temperatures are lowered wheresafety and building heat gain are concerns.
MODEL VHT is available in the same standard sizes as our Model HT. Model VHT consists of a highdensityaggregate bonded with high purity calcium aluminate cement. It is resistant to 1/50N sulfuric acid, but is notintended for use with incinerator effluents below acid dew points. It resists alkali attacks and may be operated up to2400ºF continuous or 3000ºF intermittent. Model VHT is used for incinerator chimneys operating between 500ºFand 2400ºF or as a breeching to heat recovery or scrubbing units.
MODEL AR2 utilizes a highdensity aggregate cobonded with high purity calcium aluminate cement andpotassium silicate binders. It resists 5% solutions of both hydrochloric and sulfuric acids and is suitable forintermittent operations where flue surfaces fall below acid dew points. Model AR2 is used for chimney systemswith intermittent exposure to condensed flue acids as well as high temperature. These conditions exist when a heatrecovery system normally in use is bypassed for service.
MODEL ARH is a 60% Alumina, high strength, high density, high abrasion resistant, low shrink mix with 3100ºFservice temperature. It resists chloride and halogen vapors as well as alkali and is therefore suitable for chimneysservicing hazardous waste incinerators. Model ARH provides a superior chimney for high temperature operationwith aggressive flue gases.
MODEL ART is an amorphous, vitreous silica, high density, and high abrasion resistant refractory. It has excellentacid resistance coupled with an ability to withstand extreme thermal shock. Model ART has characteristics allowingit to handle not only the chimney system environment down stream of scrubbers with temperatures in the 140ºrange and water saturated acid flue gases, but also under bypass temperatures not exceeding 2000ºF.
Technical Data Sheets are available from VanPacker for the above products.
In some cases, a combination of lining materials, increased insulation thickness or increased wall thickness isdesirable. VanPacker can provide components with standard inside diameters having larger standard outsidediameters. For example, a 10”ID section could be provided with a 16”OD (the OD of our 12”ID material).
VANPACKER is also able to custom apply linings, such as premixed refractories and membranes. This providesthe flexibility of an engineered lining with the quality control of factory fabrication. VanPacker Company can helpyou select the right product for your chimney and breeching system.

INSPECTION… . All Products: Chimneys, vents and exhaust systems of all construction types are by their verynature the highest points in their given area. They are subject to lightning, high winds, earth movement, to unusualcorrosion and combustion processes which can deteriorate linings or create excessive soot, temperatures andother conditions which may sometimes be above the design criteria or the addition or modification of appliancesmay overload an installation.
Listed prefabricated chimneys are subject to severe testing and controls that minimize many of the problemsassociated with other construction types: however, it is good practice with all chimneys, vents and exhaust systemsto inspect them annually to insure that no unusual conditions exist.

RAIN CAP DISCUSSIONRain caps are not recommended for general use. They are ineffective in keeping rain out, reduce effective draft, aresubject to corrosion, and divert effluent back to the building where it can create problems for both equipment andpersonnel. Rain caps are also expensive and present a large area to catch wind, thereby increasing loads in thefoundation and bracing.
Condensation occurs in chimney systems at some point in the operating cycle. Therefore it is always recommendedthat a drain be provided at the base of the chimney. With a drain in the chimney, a rain cap is not required.
VanPacker recommends that the chimney top be left open and a drain be provided at the chimney base.

Standard pipe bracing ispreferable to cable guys where itis practical because only twopoints of attachment arerequired instead of the threeneeded for cables. Minimalmaintenance is required withpipe bracing, whereas cableguys must be regularly checkedand the turnbuckles must beadjusted for tension. 11/2”standard galvanized pipe withplain ends will handle mostrequirements.
Steel Angle, 2”x2”x1/4”, inrequired lengths will handle mostbracing needs.
Miscellaneous Guying andBracing Materials: 115/16”IDsteel tubing fits snugly over 11/2” pipe for making connectorsand telescoping adjusters. 1”diameter black iron pipe may beused to connect bracing pipe toroof anchors. Galvanized bolts inthe following sizes should beused:
