new friends at Xi’an Hui Ling, an Intrepid Foundation-supported
community project for people with learning disabilities. Day 6

ITINERARy... Days 1-3 Beijing Modern high-rise buildings tower
over buzzing, busy streets - a dramatic contrast to the timeless
wonder of Beijing’s ancient sites. There is plenty of time to explore
this amazing metropolis, from the Forbidden City and Summer
Palace to backstreet hutongs packed with tiny shops and eateries.
Days 4-5 Great Wall Travel to a lesser-known section of the

incredible views of the countryside. Rise early the next morning

there is much to see in Xi’an. Cycle around the city walls, admire

Warriors - eternally vigilant in guarding the tomb of China’s First
Emperor, the proud warriors are positioned in strict accordance
with an ancient text on the art of war. Days 9-10 Shanghai Hunt
for a bargain in the bustling Yuyuan Bazaar or shop up a storm
in some of China’s hippest stores. Gobble Shanghai’s favourite
dumpling, xiaolongbao - but do so with caution - these molten

catch a thrilling performance by the energetic Shanghai acrobats.
Days 11-12 Xitang Escape the hustle and bustle of the big cities
for an overnight stay in a traditional guesthouse. Visit ancient villas

traditional life. Gobble skewered hida beef and explore. Days 8-10

Takayama is a quaint cluster of traditional inns and sake breweries.
Check out the town’s 600-year-old morning market, visit the
outdoor museum of the Hida Folk Village and sip on some local
sake. Days 5-6 Koya-san Steeped in mysticism and religious
history, the temples of Koya-san provide a tranquil setting for trying
its shojin ryori (vegetarian cuisine) and joining the resident monks
in meditation. Days 7-8 Osaka Partake in the local custom of
‘kuidaore’ (to eat until you drop), and indulge in the smorgasbord
of delights on Dotombori - Osaka’s ‘eat street’. Don’t miss the local
treat of takoyaki (octopus balls), while culinarily courageous diners
can feast on fugu (pufferfish). Days 9-10 hiroshima Be inspired
