“I AM A HOPPY GUY”
TOO HOP TO TROT
What are Hops?• Hops are one of the basic ingredients in beer
brewing - the others being grain, yeast, and water
• Flower of the hop plant• Contain an essential oil with a very bitter flavor• Contain two essential acids – Alpha: responsible for the bitter flavor in the beer– Beta: contribute to beer's bitter aroma
Hop Kinds
• Bittering and Aroma– Bittering hops have higher
concentrations of alpha acids, are responsible for the large majority of the bitter flavor of a beer, and are generally boiled longer
– Aroma hops are typically added to the wort later to prevent the evaporation of the essential oils, to impart "hop taste" , or "hop aroma"
Why We Hop
• To counter the sweetness of the malt extract or “first wort”
• To preserve the Beer• Flavor, Smell, and Feel• The bitterness given to
the beer because of the Hops is measured in, International Bitterness Units or (IBU’s)
• The US is the #2 Producer next to Germany
• Hops has been used as treatment for anxiety, restlessness, and insomnia
• It grows up like a vine• Dangerous to Dogs• The Type is named for
origin
