You can transform some natural elements into a beautiful tablesetting that will be the perfect accent to any of your holiday gath-erings. Here are some tips to fill your home with holiday cheerwithout breaking the bank.
Mixed Medley
Come Christmas, this family room mantel features an assortment of
vintage trinkets pulled together to create an enchanting display. Garland
draped across the mantel and cheery plaid lampshades complete the look.
Don’t have an extra lamp to decorate? You can pick up a small lamp &
lampshade from a second-hand store. Spray-paint the base red & cover
the lampshade with a festive plaid material, add a little plaid or red rib-
bon along the top & bottom edges…and voila!
Fresh Look
To add an extra touch of Christmas to the family room, red poinsettias
take the place of everyday coffee table accessories. As a finishing touch,
you can position the blooms inside small vintage bottles.
Sweet Treats
Red, green, and white candies (from the Bulk Barn) piled high in
attractive vintage glass jars make for a simple and inviting holiday
display. No vintage jars? You can use various sizes Mason jars. Add a
red ribbon around one or two of the jars to create a festive look..
Delightful Display
You can use some small color-themed elements such as red gingham
linens and decorative Christmas cupcake liners to create an easy transi-
tion for the holidays. Here, the contrasting red accents blend right in with
the display of Blue Willow china.
Jolly Table
For a great Christmas table, you can use what you already own.
I like to mix everyday white dishware with small holiday accents
(red bowls, candles, etc) to create a place setting that is festive yet casual.
– Spread a few small red & silver tree ornaments on the table. A white
ceramic pitcher filled with red flowers creates a cheerful centerpiece.
You can add a couple of miniature Christmas trees (or a fresh evergreen
bough)..
Want to add some “fake snow”? Here is a tip to create theillusion of frosty snow on your Christmas trees or boughs.
Supplies
• 2 cups soap flakes
• 2/3 cups liquid starch
• Blue food coloring
• Glitter (if desired)
• 3 tablespoons water
Instructions
• Combine the soap flakes and liquid starch in a mixing bowl.
• Slowly add the water to the mixture and beat with an egg beater.
The mixture will get thicker as you blend.
• Add a few drops of food coloring as you beat the mixture until you get
a nice icy snow color.
• At this time you can also mix in some glitter if you'd like a sparkling
snow look.
Use this mixture to paint the Christmas tree branches of your real or
artificial tree. You'll get a nice snow dusted look.
Vintage Details
Neatly tied together, evergreen and ribbon hang inside a kitchen
window. These bright red Christmas bells are one of the many old-
fashioned details that help give this home its old-world Christmas appeal.
Can’t find red bells? Grab some old black bells from an antique shop
and spray-paint them red.

wreath. An old kitchen chair,
painted red has a distressed
look of years gone by..
But how can you achieve this distressed, scuffed and scratched
character look? It is easy and there are numerous techniques you can use
to scruff up your piece. All you have to do is figure out which one suits
your project best to make it a cherished family heirloom.
• After sanding your project piece, clean it thoroughly. Wipe off the
sanding dust with a damp cloth. Heavy grime can be removed with a
wire brush.
• Give your piece a base coat – preferably in light beige, yellow or cream
color.
• Once the paint is dry brush on a second, darker coat.
• Rub off most of the second coat before the paint has dried. You can
leave bits of paint in the cracks and corners. Don’t hesitate to leave
streaks and shadows either.
• Allow the piece to dry completely.
• Add another coat of paint and repeat the last process, if you feel it needs
even more appeal.
A few tips:
If you doubt your “faux painting” abilities, bargain shop at a junk-shop
for a smaller test piece first. If it does not work out you have only lost
some time and elbow grease.
You can add some extra distress by randomly bouncing metal chains or
a ring with various keys over the surface. Scratches with coins and nails
will increase that vintage look as well!
To get a different, perhaps more convincing aged-effect you can reveal
bits and pieces of the original surface by extra sanding.
Remember: you can use an oil-based paint over latex, but never latex
over oil. Oil-based paints prevent other types of paint from sticking to
them.
TIP: Avoid overcrowding a room with numerous Christmasdécor ornaments. It is best to remove (and store) a regular item and
replace it with a festive one. As well, remove a framed print in order to
hang your favourite holiday scene. ~ After the holidays are over, pack
away your decorations & return all regular items to their choice
location..
