Goals
The Kids Choice Book Award provides students the opportunity to practice
cooperative learning while designing and creating an original book award. Students of diverse learning styles will benefit from
the varying responsibilities required to complete the project. The finished project is intended to offer students a means of accomplishment while they demonstrate an understanding of working together as
a group. This project is an exceptional way to engage students and encourage
reading a variety of genres for enjoyment.
Students will examine literature, implement technology skills, and work cooperatively with their classmates.
Students have the opportunity to express
themselves creatively through the creation of the award, PowerPoint, and the “Press
Conference” presentation.
Instructional Objectives
Students will investigate book awards using the Internet. Students will use their research of established awards,
award criteria, and best-seller booklists to create an original award. Students
are responsible for creating an appropriate and descriptive name for the award, developing criteria for the award, deciding who will choose the winner(s), designing the award itself, deciding how the author or publisher will be notified
and what type of celebration will be held host to announce the winner to the public, creating a press release about your award, featuring the name and symbol created and describing all the
aspects of the award, and participating in a “Press Conference” presenting the
award to the “public.” The students will learn how to use the Internet to conduct
research and create a PowerPoint® presentation effectively. Students will
be responsible for presenting the created award in public speaking setting.

Course Outline & Lesson Plans
Day 1: Introduce Web Quest through PowerPoint presentation. Explain each slide. Explain evaluation rubric. Students break into groups and begin research using Resources sheet.
***Teacher Preparation: Have copies of all resource sheets available for students. Links to various award sites may be linked on a class web site or bookmarked on computers being used.
Day 2: Students continue group research. Day 3: Groups will begin drafting award on chart paper including all appropriate components based on resources chart. ***Teacher Preparation: Have a sheet of chart paper and markers available for each group.

Adaptation Suggestions
This project was implemented with 30 fourth grade students with the main subject area being Reading/Language Arts.
Below are suggestions for adapting grade levels and content areas.
Lower Elementary: Research awards such as the Caldecott Award. As a class, create criteria and an award to give to books read throughout the year. An area of the room could be set up to display books awarded the class-created award. Content Areas: For Math, Science, Social Studies, Art, Music, and P.E., students can research awards given in those fields i.e, Grammy Award, Scholastic Art & Writing Award, and Basch & Lomb Excellence in Science Award. Students can create an award based on criteria for the particular content area to award to fellow classmates at the end of the school year. Middle School/High School: Students create award criteria similar to the stated project but apply the awards to their own or classmates’ works of literature.
