Dear Heartians!
C h r i s t m a s i s t h e f e a s t commemorating God becoming human! This is indeed a strange thing to happen, and not really very logical! However, for people of faith, it is inspirational, reminding them that there is God who cares for them, like a parent! As the International Year of Soils comes to an end, the feast of Christmas should remind us of the sacredness of soil (earth) and the need to protect it, keeping in mind the Biblical Command of 'till and keep' (Genesis Chap. 2: 15}.As the Catholic Church has decided to open the door of mercy by declaring a longer year of mercy, the challenge is to get beyond the typical boundaries of ' an th ropos ' t o t he l a rge r interdependent network of 'life' so that there could be 'life in abundance' for all. As 'children of the Heart', let us truly grow as Heartians with sensitivity towards all life-forms, never excluding the humans - in the neighbourhood (be it Kochi, Chennai or Syria) or in the womb!Greetings of Peace and all good wishes for a year of Mercy!

Eminent Journalist P. Sainath Delivered Chavara Excellence Lecture
The second Chavara Excellence for Social Transformation Lecture Series
was held on 15th December 2015.The lecture 'Media, Money Power and
Democracy' was delivered by eminent journalist P. Sainath, who is a recipient
of the Ramon Magsaysay award and author of the non-fiction bestseller
Everybody Loves a Good Drought. District Collector M.G.Rajamanickam
IAS presided over the function. P. Sainath pointed out that growing inequality
was the curse of the country that is purportedly growing in “leaps and
bounds.” He denounced government policies that favoured the elite and
insistence of the state on taxing the poor. He didn’t conceal his anguish when
he said that India, which is home to the largest number of poor in the world,
also hosts the largest number of billionaires after US and China.
He also revealed his concern about the future of journalism and the threat
posed by paid news. However, he shunned cynicism when he said that
responsible citizens, in the absence of a sensitive political class, would rise to
the demands of a democratic society. Rev. Dr. Prasant Palakkappillil CMI,
Rev. Dr. Jose Kuriedath CMI and Prof. Siby Abraham also addressed the
gathering.
