Dear parents and carers,
Home learning at F.P.S
Why do we expect students to complete home learning?
The overall purpose of our home learning programme is to
support our students with an opportunity to practise, review and
apply their knowledge at home so that they develop proficiency
and independent learning skills. I recognise there are a range of
viewpoints about home learning within our community. So we
have aimed to provide opportunities where students can practise
current learning at home.
We expect the following each week:
1. Reading at home every night (either independently or
together) with the aim to grow readers who read for
enjoyment.
2. ‘Look Say Name Cover Write Check’ Personal Spelling
words.
3. Handwriting practice- We have identified this as an
important area for children to develop fluency.
4. Other tasks that support the learning that is currently
occurring in the classroom e.g. Unpacking a seed for the
Writer’s Notebook or a survey connected to the unit of
inquiry, maths revision.
I want to encourage everyone to keep in mind that the setting
of home learning needs to be a manageable task for teachers.

Home learning has changed from our own experiences as we no
longer teach from textbooks (and haven’t since the last
century). Schools have changed. In order for teachers to
differentiate in their classrooms considerable time is spent
together analysing student evidence of learning. Home learning
needs to be an approach that supports students to develop
independent habits through the completion of tasks at home.
Essentially it is time for practice. We require parents to
encourage and monitor to ensure their children are completing
home learning tasks. Our expectations as a school for home
learning are outlined in the school’s home learning policy.
I am interested in hearing feedback from families about this
policy. Please email me your feedback to
[email protected] We will consider this
feedback when reviewing the Home Learning policy at the
Education Sub-committee.
Attitudes to School Survey and
Student Engagement and Wellbeing
We value student voice as a means to improving student
engagement, wellbeing and quality instruction and are
conducting a survey to find out what your child thinks of our
school. It has been wonderful over the past couple of weeks to
visit each classroom from Year 4 to Year 6 to support the
completion of the Attitude to School Survey. The Attitude to
School Survey helps us gain an understanding of students'
perceptions and experience of school. Our school will use the
survey results to plan programs and activities to improve your
child's schooling experience. It will support with the
development of an approach to wellbeing at our school.
It was fabulous to see our Year 6 leaders in the playground
encouraging our students to be active over lunchtime through
skipping. Leadership responsibilities support students to build
and develop relationships across the school.
It was also a pleasure to drop in and visit our Concert band this
morning. Hearing the music from my office was a joy. I have
always believed rich and diverse opportunities help children to
discover their talents.
OFFICE NEWS
Next Friday, we will be hosting a Parent Forum/ Coffee
Morning at 9:00am. There are a number of wellbeing
focuses:
- Opportunities to get involved with follow up from the
Wellbeing Summit. Volunteers would be wonderful.
- Consider where Wellbeing fits within the new Enhanced
PYP.
- The Student Support Learning Space and Sensory
Room Update.

Well Done
Well done to Cleo from 2C for her information report all about
Gilmore Girls School. She researched and wrote this during
Reconciliation Week, and found out that its founder, Mary
Gilmore, was an advocate for Aboriginal Rights. Keep up the
great work!
Well done Annika, Ethan, Finn, Amica, Morgan and Liam for
their efforts at the Chess Comp on Thursday!
Second Hand Uniform
All second hand uniform items will
now be available to purchase from
The Salvos Store in Footscray (199
Barkly St). They are open 6 days a
week and located conveniently
500m down the road from our
school. This decision to move
second hand uniform sales off site
was made due to a lack of storage
space at school.
Could we request all parents
wishing to donate good condition
second hand uniform, to please
take them directly to Salvos Store.
There will be a final second hand
uniform stall at school on Friday
21st of June at 3.15pm.
A HUGE thank you to parents
Amelda, Sarah and others who
have volunteered their time and
effort to launder, sort, price and
sell second hand uniform items.
We appreciate all you hard work in
running our second hand uniform
over the last few years. Thank you!
Lost Property
We currently have a very high
number of items in lost property.
Please ensure you or your child are
checking lost property on a regular
basis for missing items. At the end
of each term, labelled uniform
items will be returned to the
classroom teached. Any unlabelled
items and non-uniform will be
taken to charity.
Toothbrush Recycling
This term, the Green Team will
continue to collect used plastic
toothbrushes and toothpaste
containers to recycle, so we avoid
sending them to landfill! Please
bring your used toothbrushes to
the office, where the Green Team
has set up a collection point.
Vietnamese Programme News
Dear parents and carers,
Our Year 5 students have explored and categorized a range of
nouns, adjectives and verbs to express opinions. We have
learnt more about Australian animals and what we call them
in Vietnamese.
Students used singular nouns and added extra words to make
the plural form of each word.
Students used highlighters to colour nouns, verbs and
adjectives. They also identified nouns, verbs and adjectives
and then labelled them in English.
Students drew a table and sorted the words into the correct
categories.
Students demonstrated their understanding by using basic
grammar structures and a range of nouns, adjectives and
verbs to produce simple sentences about their chosen
Australian animals.
Warm regards and thank you for your on-going support.
