The Bible contains some wonderful stories about people who began to serve God when they were children. We’ve heard a lot about David and the rocks, Samuel and the Voice of God, Joseph and his coat; but the story of Josiah, the boy king, is not familiar to many of us, even though it appears twice in Scripture – in 2 Kings and 2 Chronicles.
Josiah became the king of Judah when he was eight years old and reigned for thirty-one years. Scripture doesn’t fill in the details about the first few years of Josiah’s reign, but the fact that Scripture does reveal certainly kindles the imagination!
Imagine that you are eight years old, and you have just become the ruler of an entire nation. I don’t know about you, but my first decree would somehow involve chocolate … and cookies … and school holidays … and more chocolate! The results could be disastrous, of course, but it would be fun for a little while!
Add a priest named Hilkiah, a palace cook named Elizabeth, Amon and his greedy tax collectors – “Iripoff,” “Rakidin,” and “Uncle Sam” - and you have tonight’s delightful program! In the midst of all the fun, the message is very clear: God uses people of all ages as they seek His wisdom and guidance and are obedient to Him.
We hope you have as much fun watching tonight’s program as we have had preparing it!
