The 1996 Krug Vintage remains oneof the greatest Champagnes evermade. It is also far less expensivethan either the Clos du Mesnil or ClosdAmbonnay but equally as delicious. This bottle is stratospheric, with layersof explosive fruit that flow effortlesslyto the multi-dimensional, captivating
finish. It is another eternal Champagnefrom Krug. A. Galloni for R. Parker, 98pts. 07/116 bottles

50Salon Le Mesnil Brut Blanc desBlancs 1997Le Mesnil-sur-Oger
Salons 1997 Brut Blanc de Blancsis drop-dead gorgeous. There is abeautiful tension between the intenseminerality of Mesnil and the warmth ofthe vintage. Textural depth, brillianceand expressive inner perfume are thehallmarks of this gorgeous Blanc de
Blancs. Flowers, mint and crisp varietalfruit linger on the impeccable finish. This is a particularly youthful, vibrantdisgorgement of the 1997 that can beenjoyed now or cellared. DisgorgedFirst Trimester, 2010. A. Galloni for R.Parker, 95 pts. 12/106 bottles (owc)

51Salon Les Mesnil Blanc de Blancs1996Le Mesnil sur Oger
The 1996 Salon is yet another winethat is maturing splendidly. Oncefocused to the point of being painfullyaustere and angular, today the 1996Salon has begun to soften and fillout. My latest bottles have been rich, generous and totally compelling inevery way. A. Galloni for R. Parker,97+ pts. 11/103 bottles

56Chateau Haut Brion 1990Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe
u: less than 2.0cm
1990: In terms of the brilliantcomplexity and nobility of thearomatics, scorched earth, blackcurrants, plums, charcoal, cedar, andspices, the 1990 offers an aromaticexplosion that is unparalleled. Itis always fascinating to taste thiswine next to the 1989, which is amonumental effort, but much morebackward and denser, without the
aromatic complexity of the 1990. The1990 put on weight after bottling, andis currently rich, full-bodied, opulent, even flamboyant by Haut Brionsstandards. It is an incredible expressionof a noble terroir in a top vintage. Whileit has been fully mature for a numberof years, it does not reveal any brickingat the edge, and I suspect it will stayat this level for another 10-15 years...but why wait? It is irresistible now. R.Parker, 98 pts. 06/093 bottles
$1,200-1,800
57Chateau Haut Brion 2000Pessac Leognan, 1er Cru Classe
A compelling nose of roasted herbs, scorched earth, sweet blueberries, plums, black currants, and a hint ofgraphite is followed by a deep, layered, sumptuously textured, full-bodiedHaut-Brion, but one with extraordinarycomplexity. This wine seems moreevolved and approachable than Ihad expected it to be at age 10. Mywindow of maturity seven years agowas 2012-2040, but I would changethat to 2010-2050. R. Parker, 99 pts.

The 1986 possesses outstandingrichness, a deep color, mediumbody, a graceful, harmonious texture, and superb length. The penetratingfragrance of cedar, chestnuts, minerals, and rich fruit is a hallmark of this wine.Powerful, dense, rich, and tannic, aswell as medium to full-bodied, withawesome extraction of fruit, this Lafitehas immense potential. Patience isrequired. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2030. Last tasted 11/94. R. Parker,100 pts. 01/981 bottle
$800-1,200
62Chateau Lafite Rothschild 1996Pauillac, 1er Cru Classe
Tasted three times since bottling, the 1996 Lafite-Rothschild isunquestionably this renowned estatesgreatest wine. As I indicated last year, only 38% of the crop was deemedgrand enough to be put into thefinal blend, which is atypically high inCabernet Sauvignon (83% Cabernet
Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 7%Merlot, and 3% Petit Verdot). Thismassive wine may be the biggest,largest-scaled Lafite I have evertasted. It will require many years tocome around, so I suspect all of uspast the age of fifty might want to giveserious consideration as to whetherwe should be laying away multiplecases of this wine. It is also the firstLafite-Rothschild to be put into anew engraved bottle (designed toprevent fraudulent imitations). The wineexhibits a thick-looking, ruby/purplecolor, and a knock-out nose of leadpencil, minerals, flowers, and blackcurrant scents. Extremely powerfuland full-bodied, with remarkablecomplexity for such a young wine, this huge Lafite is oozing with extractand richness, yet has managed topreserve its quintessentially elegantpersonality. This wine is even richerthan it was prior to bottling. It shouldunquestionably last for 40-50 years.R. Parker, 100 pts. 04/997 bottles

Consistently scoring between 98-100, the superb 1982 Margaux maybe slightly bigger, bolder, and moremasculine than vintages producedover the last 15-20 years. Its darkplum/purple color is followed by notesof melted tar intermixed with sweet
cassis and floral underpinnings. Veryfull-bodied and dense for a ChateauMargaux, with a slight rusticity to thetannins, it boasts blockbuster power, richness, and impressive aromatics. Itappears set for another 30-40 years oflife. R. Parker, 98 pts. 06/091 bottle

Atop a hillside, Chateau Cos dEstournel

87Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou 2005St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe
The 2005 Ducru Beaucaillou is a10,000-case blend of 67% CabernetSauvignon and 33% Merlot (they usedto produce 18,000-20,000 cases). Itis an exceptionally powerful wine witha dense purple color, superb intensity, and a beautiful, sweet nose of springflowers, raspberries, blueberries, graphite, and creme de cassis. Full-bodied with fabulous concentration, exceptionally high tannin, good acidity, and massive layers of richness thatbuild incrementally on the palate, thismonumental effort is more structuredthan their outstanding 2003. It may bethe finest wine produced at this estatesince the 1982 and 1961 Ducrus. R.Parker, 97 pts. 04/081 bottle

88Chateau Ducru Beaucaillou 2008St. Julien, 2eme Cru Classe
One of the stars of the vintage, and
a remarkable achievement in 2008,with impressive richness, this densepurple colored wine is almost asopaque as the 2010. Spring flowers, crushed rocks, creme de cassis andsome subtle oak are followed by afull-bodied, concentrated wine thattranscends the vintage character in itspower, richness, and aging potential. It also exhibits tremendous precision, purity, and depth of character. It ismore forward than the 2010 is likely tobe, but probably not as sumptuous asthe 2009 will turn out to be. This is awine to buy. R. Parker, 95+ pts. 05/1112 bottles (owc)

One of the more flamboyant andsumptuous wines of the vintage, thisinky/purple-colored St.-Julien revealsthrilling levels of opulence, richnessand aromatic pleasures. A soaringbouquet of creme de cassis, charcoal,
graphite and spring flowers is followedby a super-concentrated wine with silkytannins, stunning amounts of glycerin,a voluptuous, multilayered mouthfeeland nearly 14% natural alcohol.Displaying fabulous definition for sucha big, plump, massive, concentratedeffort, I suspect the tannin levels arehigh even though they are largelyconcealed by lavish amounts of fruit, glycerin and extract. 101Chateau Montrose 2009St. Estephe, 2eme Cru Classe
A colossal effort, the 2009 Montroserepresents a hypothetical blend of themonumental duo of 1989 and 1990combined with the phenomenal 2003.With 13.7% alcohol (an all-time highat Montrose), it is a blend of 65%Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot andthe rest tiny quantities of CabernetFranc and Petit Verdot. Some structureand minerality can be detected in thebackground, but the overall impressionis one of massive blackberry, blackcurrant and mulberry fruit intermixedwith forest floor, damp earth, crushedrocks and a hint of spring flowers.
Full-bodied with sweet but abundanttannin, Jean-Bernard Delmas believesthis is the greatest wine he has madeduring his short tenure at Montrosesince retiring from Haut-Brion. Thiswine will undoubtedly shut down for adecade, then unleash its power, gloryand potential perfection. R. Parker,100 pts. 02/1212 bottles (owc)

La Missionlies just across the road from
Haut Brion. The descendants of American
banker Clarence Dillon now run both
properties (previously owning just Haut
Brion). Given this fact, there exists an
inevitable fixation to contrast the properties.
Still, the arrangement between them is
not really one of sibling rivalry at all. What
is striking is how these wine estates and
adjacent vineyards exist so close to the
city center of Bordeaux (4 miles). Mercifullythe unusually deep gravel soils so ideal for
viticulture were never paved over! PhM

vibrancy and excellent definition, thisbeautiful 2009 exhibits high but sweettannin. It is more sexy than the 2005was at a similar age, although theirlevel of extract and concentration isrelatively equal. Performing even better from bottlethan it did from barrel, this appears tobe the finest Lynch Bages since the2000, 1990 and 1989. According tothe chateau, the 2009 has the highestlevel of polyphenols ever measured aswell as high alcohol (nearly 13.5%). Ablend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon andthe rest largely Merlot with touches of
Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it isan expressive, voluptuously texturedeffort with unctuosity and powerful, juicy, succulent blackberry and blackcurrant flavors, low acids, a layered, massive mouthfeel, but no sense ofheaviness or fatigue. 127Chateau Pontet Canet 2009Pauillac, 5eme Cru Classe
An amazing wine in every sense, this classic, full-bodied Pauillac isthe quintessential Pontet Canetfrom proprietor Alfred Tesseron, whocontinues to reduce yields and farmshis vineyards biodynamicallya rarity inBordeaux. Black as a moonless night, the 2009 Pontet Canet offers up notesof incense, graphite, smoke, licorice, creme de cassis and blackberries.A wine of irrefutable purity, laser-like precision, colossal weight andrichness, and sensational freshness, this is a tour de force in winemakingthat is capable of lasting 50 or moreyears. The tannins are elevated, but they are sweet and beautifullyintegrated as are the acidity, wood andalcohol (which must be in excess of14%). This vineyard, which is s ituatedon the high plateau of Pauillac adjacentto Mouton Rothschild, appears to havedone everything perfectly in 2009. This
cuvee should shut down in the cellarand re-open in a decade or more. R.Parker, 100 pts. 02/1212 bottles (owc)

PetrusIn the renowned village ofPomerol, pack-leader Chateau Petrus
is unassumingly modest. Close by the
road, lacking some formal alley, it is
easy to overlook when contrasted with
some architecturally grander neighbors.
The robins-egg-blue shutters against
the limestone creates a hushed and
dignified exterior to the chai. Of course
the hedonistic treasures crafted within are
anything but reserved On average, only
about 4,000 cases are made each vintage.

1990 is a rich and fabulously superb, sweet wine. This wine also possesseslots of elegance and finesse. The winesmedium gold color is accompaniedby an exceptionally sweet nose ofhoneyed tropical fruits, peaches, coconut, and apricots. High quality, subtle toasty oak is well-integrated.The wine is massive on the palate, withlayers of intensely ripe botrytis-tinged,exceptionally sweet fruit. Surprisinglywell-integrated acidity, and a seamless,full-bodied power and richness havecreated a wine of remarkable harmonyand purity. Certainly it is one of therichest Yquems I have ever tasted, with50-100 years of potential longevity. Anawesome Yquem! R. Parker, 99 pts.04/991 demi bottle

186Chateau dYquem 2001Sauternes, 1er Cru Superiore
There are 10,000 cases of thisperfect sweet white Bordeaux. The2001 Yquem reveals a hint of greenin its light gold color. While somewhatreticent aromatically, with airing, itoffers up honeyed tropical fruit, orangemarmalade, pineapple, sweet cremebrulee, and buttered nut-like scents.
In the mouth, it is full-bodied withgorgeously refreshing acidity as well asmassive concentration and unctuosity.Everything is uplifted and given laser-like focus by refreshing acidity. Thislarge-scaled, youthful Yquem appearsset to take its place among the mostlegendary vintages of the past, andwill age effortlessly for 75+ years. R.Parker, 100 pts. 04/053 bottles

Tasting note: A cool, stony andreserved nose features spice, darkand red berry fruit, obvious earth andsmoked game influences, all of whichcontinue onto the intensely mineral-infused big-bodied flavors that for allthe size and power remain beautifullydetailed on the focused, powerful andmoderately austere finish. This has

well-muscled and especially structuredfinish that seems to go on withoutend. This positively dazzling effort isnot quite old school in basic characterthough it knocks on the door of it andlike several of these grands crus, willneed 15 to 20+ years to reach its fullprime. A wow and potentially oneof the greatest vintages ever for theDujac Bonnes Mares, which is sayingsomething given this wines superbtrack record. Burghound, 96 pts.01/121 bottle

Though thisis not what I would call a dense wine,it has a finish that lasts for minutes andexudes energy and vibrancy plus theimpeccable balance should permit the99 Musigny to drink well for a long, long time. A terrific wine that clearly is
still on its way up so assuming that youhave well-stored bottles, there shouldbe no concern about missing theprime drinking window. All of that said, this could be enjoyed now with 30minutes or so of air and the right food.I have multiple, and consistent, notes.Burghound, 95 pts. 10/121 bottle

Tasting note: A similar but slightlyriper and much spicier nose includesblue berry and plum nuances thatprecede the more obviously mineral-

Tasting note: Brilliant ruby. Expansiveand very open on the nose with afantastic array of spices, flowers andfruit aromas leading to very serious, exuberantly fresh and impressivelydeep flavors that also have awonderfully tactile texture to them. But
as it usually is, its not the raw powerthat impresses but rather the incrediblecombination of mind bogglingcomplexity coupled with perfectbalance and this just dances acrossthe palate yet stains it with notably ripepinot extract. The finish is all silk andvelvet but with a deeply buried, veryfirm and chewy backbone of tanninsthat lasts for minutes. This is greatnessin the making. Tasted multiple timeswith consistent notes. The 2003 Hermitage Ex-Voto blancis the quintessential white Hermitage,a blend of 95% Marsanne and 5%Roussanne with extraordinary honeyedlicorice, quince, marmalade, andtruffle notes, an unctuous texture, great purity and richness, and aprofound mouthfeel and length. Thisis extraordinary wine and certainlyone of the most profound dry whites Iever tasted. It seems to be set for anamazingly long life. R. Parker, 96+ pts.04/073 bottles

This murky, purple/garnet-coloredwine offers up an exotic nose of tea, smoked duck, licorice, truffles, andearth. Extraordinarily concentrated, and
almost too rich to be called a beverage, this viscous, compellingly endowed, massive La Landonne remains 5-7years away from full maturity. The winepossesses excruciatingly high tanninin the finish, but awesome levels ofextract and glycerin. R. Parker, 98 pts.01/973 bottles

The blockbuster 2005 Chateauneufdu Pape Barbe Rac shows classicgarrigue notes intermixed with groundpepper, lavender, and sweet blackcurrant and black cherry notes withhints of raspberry and olive. The wineis full-bodied has a boatload of tannin,
fabulous concentration, and a finish ofclose to 50 seconds. This is a brilliantBarbe Rac that should be at its bestbetween 2010 and 2025. R. Parker,96 pts. 10/076 bottles (owc)

292Clos des Papes Chateauneuf duPape Rouge 2003Southern Rhone
A great bottle and showing thehallmark elegance of the estate, the2003 Clos des Papes Chateauneufdu Pape offers up a kirsch liqueur, liquid flower, red licorice and spice-boxdriven bouquet along with a full-bodied, seamless, silky profile on thepalate. Still beautifully put together andaging gracefully, with a core of sweetfruit, it is certainly drinking well now,yet should continue to hold and drinknicely through 2020. Jeb Dunnuck forR. Clos du Mont Olivet Chateauneuf duPape Cuvee Papet 2007Southern Rhone
The 2007 Chateauneuf du Pape LaCuvee du Papet may will turn out to betheir finest example since the 1998 and1990. Stylistically, it probably comesclosest to resembling the legendary1990. Notes of roasted meats andsmoked duck, with Provencal herbs, truffle, incense, licorice, and pepper, are all there, plus enormous quantitiesof red and black fruits. This is one heckof a complex wine, with a bouquet thatis the essence of southern France,in particular Provence. Full-bodied,powerful, with the glycerin and level ofrichness covering some lofty tannins, this wine is already accessible andnearly impossible to resist, but myinstincts suggest it will be absolutelyglorious in another 4-5 years and keepfor 15-20. 296Pierre Usseglio Chateauneuf duPape Cuvee Mon Aieul 2007Southern Rhone
There are 1,800 cases of the 2007Chateauneuf du Pape Cuvee du MonAieul (100% tank-aged Grenache). It represents an awesome naked/virginal expression of Grenache fromthree vineyard parcels planted in sand, clay, and limestone soils. After tastingthis wine on five separate occasions,I can state with certainty, it has themost saturated color of any MonAieul produced to date. Moreover, itsperfume of blueberry liqueur, blackraspberries, licorice, roasted meatjuices, and lavender is incredible.Full-bodied power, a multilayeredmouthfeel, tremendous purity, andawesome concentration put this winein a class by itself. This sensationalChateauneuf du Pape is still very
young, and 3-4 years of cellaringis required. It should be a modernday legend and last for nearly twodecades. R. Parker, 100 pts. 10/093 bottles
