Ancient Olympic Games The first Olympic Games
were held in Olympia in Greece in 776 BC
They took place every 4 years and were held in honour of the Greek Gods.
They included boxing, wrestling, javelin and discus throwing, running, jumping and chariot racing.
The ancient Olympic Games continued until about 394 AC.
Modern Olympic Games The first modern Olympic Games were
held in Athens, Greece in 1896.
A French man by the name Pierre de Coubertin came up with the idea of reviving this competition.
He thought that bringing young athletes together from all over the world would help bring world peace.
The games have been held every 4 years since, except in 1916 during World War 1 and in 1940 and 1944 during World War 2.
The First Modern Olympic Game – Athens 1896
241 athletes participated. All male.
9 different sports and only 14 countries were represented.

years old. The first summer youth
game took place in Singapur in 2010
The next summer youth game will be in Buenos Aires in 2018

international multi –sport event, involving athletes with a range of physical disabilities
The Paralympic Games are organized in parallel with the Olympic Games,
The first official Paralympic Games was held in Rome in 1960 with 400 athletes from 23 countries.

The Olympic Flag The Olympic flag was first used in Belgium in 1920
It has 5 interlocking rings
The rings represent the 5 continents that came together for the Olympic Games – blue for Europe, yellow for Asia, black for Africa, green for Australia and Oceania and red for the Americas.
The Olympic Flame The idea of the Olympic flame
began during the ancient Olympic Games.
The flame is lit for each Olympics and burned constantly during the Games.
The flame travels from Greece to the city where the Olympic Games will take place.
The Next Summer Olympic Game – Rio 2016
The first time in South America
10.500 athletes will participate.
42 sports will be contested
204 countries will be represented.
During 16 days there will be 306 medal events

The mascot name is Vinicius. Represent the flora and fauna of Brazil
The Symbol is 3 holding hands dancing men, They are done in yellow, blue and green, which symbolize the ocean, the forest and the sun
