ST. PATRICK’S SCHOOL NEWSLETTER 10th May, 2017

Two very important things are happening this weekend. It’s Mother’s Day on Sunday and some of our Year Four students are marking an important point in their faith journey by receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist.

Please keep the students in your thoughts and prayers this weekend as they celebrate this significant milestone. I’d also like to congratulate the parents for all of their efforts in preparing these children over the past few months.

MOTHER’S DAY …… What can you say about this very special day? If you know me and you’ve read some of my “rantings” then this may seem like a “scratched record” but that doesn’t really bother me (or so it seems!).

It’s fair to say that without mothers, none of us would be here! It doesn’t take a brain surgeon to work that out! However, I think that the ability to give birth is the most beautiful and special experience a person can have. Think about it. It’s life creating. There can be no greater gift. I think that that is reflected in the bond between mother and child. Yes, fathers play an incredibly important role but that’s for another time.

The love that a mother has for a child is the same as the love God has for each of us. I have often thought about this over the years as I tried to understand what God’s love means to me. There is nothing a Mother (or Father) wouldn’t do to help, support, protect, nurture their child. That’s how God loves us. Now, to be clear, as beautiful as the gift of child birth is, you don’t have to have given birth to feel the same way about children. Adoptive mothers (and fathers) experience the same level of intensive love for their children. I know this to be true both in my personal life and in my professional life where I’ve worked with many adoptive parents who love their children so much that the depth of their love is bottomless.

A mother’s love is like no other. I have many fond memories of my mother and the love she showed me. That doesn’t always mean “plain sailing” either. There was a time, going through puberty for example, when I became an insufferable brat! (hard to believe I know- lol). She loved me none-the-less. But most of my memories are of her being there when I needed her. Loving me and being proud of me for who I was. Even as an “oldie” I still remember her hugs and kisses from my childhood. That was a special place that no-one can take away. These memories are also a source of solace in tough times as well as my learning how to show affection to others.

So, Happy Mother’s Day to all the mums of the world. You deserve a day that celebrates the priceless contribution you make to the world. May our children learn what it means to be loved by God through their experiences of your love for them.

Dear Parents, A heart felt thank you to all of our wonderful parents, staff and students for all of their efforts to make the Mayfair the successful day it was yet again. I don’t have the final financial figures yet but more important than how much was raised was the commitment shown by our families to ensure the success of the day. SO…. Thankyou …… Thankyou …… Thankyou. Special thanks to Tennille Hall who oversaw the whole operation. The day ran very smoothly indeed. There were lots of others that contributed a great deal and if I began naming them, I would invariably leave someone out and hurt some feelings. Just know that your efforts make our school the special place that it is. Money raised will go to support existing and new projects. Some of the things to be done include but are not limited to: 1. Resilience Project Booked (Feb 2018 - cost $8000.00) 2. Classroom readers being purchased - the school is matching the $500.00 per year level so we have

$500.00 per class. 3. Fence Purchased – sustainability garden to be established. 3. Brochures and Information collected on Playground equipment for playground upgrade (major task) 4. Research done on Playground games (need to talk with students before proceeding). 5. Money has been expended by the school for uniforms for a few families in need (Pastoral Care Fund). The P&F also donated $500.00 to the trust fund for the children who recently lost their parents in the family violence tragedy of a few weeks ago (Thanks Vanida O’Brien for co-ordinating that on our behalf).

CONFIRMATION/EUCHARISTCONFIRMATION/EUCHARISTCONFIRMATION/EUCHARISTCONFIRMATION/EUCHARIST –––– THIS WEEKENDTHIS WEEKENDTHIS WEEKENDTHIS WEEKEND This weekend there are three Masses that families can attend to celebrate the Sacraments of Confirmation/Eucharist. On Saturday (13th May) 10.30am and 6.00pm at St Patrick’s Church and on Sunday (14th May), 9.00am at Our Lady’s Church.

There will be a practice at the Church where the children are celebrating these Sacraments on Thursday (11th May) at 7.00pm. Families are to go to the Church that they have nominated to attend. Please continue to keep these students, and their families, in your thoughts and prayers.

CELEBRATORY LITURGY THIS MONDAYCELEBRATORY LITURGY THIS MONDAYCELEBRATORY LITURGY THIS MONDAYCELEBRATORY LITURGY THIS MONDAY Next Monday morning at 9.00am, instead of our usual flag raising, we will sing the National Anthem in our School Hall, to be followed by a brief liturgy to celebrate our newly Confirmed students. A presentation will also be made to these students to mark this significant event in their journey of faith. Parents, grandparents, friends etc are welcome to join us for this event. It should run no more than twenty to twenty-five minutes.

NAPLAN TESTINGNAPLAN TESTINGNAPLAN TESTINGNAPLAN TESTING The Years 3 and 5 teachers are currently overseeing the Naplan testing in their classes. Yesterday the children did the Language Conventions and Writing component, today they completed the Reading component and tomorrow they are doing the Numeracy section. Once completed, the papers are marked independently and a report is sent back to the school for parents to collect if they so wish.

GOVERNMENT FUNDING GOVERNMENT FUNDING GOVERNMENT FUNDING GOVERNMENT FUNDING TO CATHOLIC SCHOOLSTO CATHOLIC SCHOOLSTO CATHOLIC SCHOOLSTO CATHOLIC SCHOOLS

There is no movement as yet on a fairer funding model for Catholic Schools. I remain optimistic that

the Federal Government will come to their senses. To do that though, they need to realise that we are

a bit “cheesed off” at their current proposal. If we don’t voice our concerns, then they will see that as

tacit approval for their policy

Speculation that Catholic Schools will be forced to hike school fees significantly is just that,

speculation! There is a lot more to do before we get to that extremely drastic measure.

If you haven’t already contacted Cathy McGowan then it’s not too late to do so. You don’t have to

write a lengthy letter, just a few short sentences expressing your concern for the funding model and

requesting that she look into it for you.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOM

FOUNDATION – Michelle & Caz

What a beautiful sunny day with a wonderful community spirit at the annual Mayfair on Sunday. We thank you for all the time and support you and your family gave to St. Patrick's school community. Thank you! As Helen Keller states, 'Alone we can do so little, together we can do so much.' This Friday, St Patrick's school community would like to invite all mothers and special friends to assembly as the school community says, 'Thank you.' On Friday morning, the Foundation classes will lead assembly beginning at 9.00am. All welcome. Religious Education - This week the children will continue the unit, 'What do l know about Jesus?' The children will continue to listen to stories about Jesus. They will participate in a Godly play story about 'Jesus and the children' and respond in a variety of ways. Literacy - The children will continue to participate in many reading and writing activities to consolidate their learning. This week you and your child may find out how many syllables are in all of your family’s names. e.g Thom-as, Jenn-i-fer Congratulations to the many children who have read over 70 nights of home reading! We thank you for your constant support. An article from Reading is Fundamental states, 'Taking the time to read with your children on a regular basis sends an important message: Reading is worthwhile.' HANDY HINT - If your child makes an error and your child does not notice ask them to check it. Does it look right and sound right to you? What else could it be? Mathematics - This week your child will continue to count forwards and backwards from any given number up to and above 20. They will sequence, count and match collections up to and above 20. What collections can you count around the home? What number can you count up to when travelling to and from school? Inquiry - The children will continue to work through the unit 'Our sustainable world.' This week the children will assess their vegetable experiment and write down their findings. REMINDERS - *'Show and tell' - Your child's favourite sport and why *Mother's Day stall - Thursday 11th May *Mother's Day assembly - Friday 12th May *Please make sure your child's jackets are labelled

F/1/2 CREW gathering On Tuesday 16th May all the Foundation and Grade 1/2 students from the three Catholic Primary schools will gather at St Patrick's for a liturgy and activities. At 1.00pm the children will enjoy a sausage sizzle with each other. We are asking for any parents who are able to help cook sausages from 11.00am to come along. We thank you for your time and support.

FOUNDATION REQUEST - We would like a photo of our students with their Mum's. If you are at school, please call in for a photo and Michelle or Carolyn will take your photo. If you are unavailable to be at school you might be able to send a photo to: [email protected] [email protected]

YEAR ONE/TWO – Gen, Karen B, Janina, Amanda & Sharyn

We begin with an enormous thanks to our families for your efforts in contributing to the success of our Mayfair – it is absolutely not possible without you! Also, a big congratulation to all the Year 1 children for their enthusiastic participation in Assembly last Friday. We are all now practicing for our Mother’s Day Assembly this Friday. All welcome!

We have a couple of busy weeks ahead of us, with dates listed below for your reference.

Literacy

In the Year 2 writing this week, we have particularly focused on using conjunctions to form more complex sentences and combine ideas. In spelling, the Year 2 students are looking at the ‘ou’ sound as in ‘out’ whilst the Year 1 students are focusing on the short sound ‘d’ and ‘pr’ blend. The Year 1 students are learning more about the structure of narratives, using the picture story books Possum Magic and Wombat Stew, as well as writing some interesting recounts about the Mayfair.

Numeracy

In Year 1 this week, the students have continued investigations with 2 digit numbers, looking at number patterns and 3D shapes. In Year 2, the students have had a completely new focus on the skill of mapping and using coordinates to describe the location of places and things. Religious Education

This week, we will look at stories that involve sightings of Jesus after his Resurrection. In particular, the story of the ‘Breakfast by the Lake.’ Students will retell the story and discuss that Jesus was seen by his disciples after his Resurrection. They will locate Jerusalem and Lake Galilee on a map for further significance.

CREW Gathering

On Tuesday 16th May, the F/1/2 students from St Bernard’s and Our Lady’s will visit St Pat’s for our annual CREW gathering. The students will commence with a liturgy in the hall, followed by activities and finally, a sausage sizzle. Parents and friends are most welcome to attend! We also require the assistance of adults to cook some sausages for the students, if anyone is able to give up an hour of time. Your assistance is greatly appreciated. Please let your child’s teacher know if you are able to assist. Happy Mother’s Day

Finally, Happy Mother’s Day to our wonderful mothers, grandmothers and special friends for Sunday May 14!! We hope it is a truly special day for you all. Upcoming Dates

YEAR THREE/FOUR – Sarah, David, Trudi, Kylie & Trish

A big thank you to all parents and family members who were able to help at the Mayfair, we appreciated it very much. Well done to all our Year 3 students who participated in Naplan you all did a fabulous job. Could you please ensure that all your child’s items are labelled including their jumpers/hats etc? At this time of the year they often come wearing their jackets which they discard quickly. Hence why it’s important to have their name on them. As you are aware, Karen Rizzo is off on leave for the term. Kylie Mcilroy will be filling in for Karen. If you need to contact her, her email is [email protected] A big welcome to Ms Allan who is working alongside Miss Smith as a Pre-Service Teacher. We welcome you to St Patrick’s Primary School and hope you enjoy your teaching rounds. She is with Miss Smith’s class for four weeks. Just a friendly reminder that the Year 4 students will have their sport on Tuesdays and Fridays. Just a reminder Miss Smith needs Year 3 photos of Mother/child. Please email them to her at

[email protected] Literacy: Our writing focus for this term will be Narrative and Persuasive text. This week in Literacy we will be completing Naplan tests and working on our Persuasive and Narrative writing. In our Persuasive Writing children will be asked to plan out a writing piece persuading their parents to increase their pocket money or give them pocket money. Children will work in small groups to discuss what they could write. Our focus for spelling this week will be _st and _sh as in best and bush. Year 4 students will be completing another Persuasive text and we are going to hear examples from the Year 6’s who wrote Persuasive letters to Mr Corrigan. This will be a great opportunity for us to see high standard examples of this type of writing. Our spelling focus is ‘ea’ as in beam and we will be focussing on comprehension in our reading groups. Numeracy

This week in Numeracy Year 3s we will be focusing on subtraction. Students will complete a number of activities associated with subtraction, such as completing vertical equations, worded problems and problem solving games. In Year 4 we will be continuing with looking at Maps. This week we will be learning about scale and measuring distances off maps of Australia and even creating some enlarged drawings that are to scale.

Inquiry: Inquiry, this week, we will be looking at different habitats of animals such as The Ocean, Desert, Rainforest, Beach and the Snow. Students will look at different animals that live in these habitats and how they survive. The Year 4’s will be looking at the native plants and animals of Africa and North America and researching these on the computers.

YEAR FIVE/SIX – Nara, Paul, Andrea, Helen & James

Mother’s Day

Tomorrow, Thursday morning, parents have organised a Mother's Day stall for the children to choose a gift for their mum. The cost is $4.00.

Friday the Foundation classes will assist with a Mother’s Day assembly for the mums. Each class will present an activity about their mum.

Crew Day St Bernard’s

Next Tuesday the Year 5 and 6 children will be visiting St Bernard’s as part of Catholic Education Week. They will work in groups with students from Our Lady’s and St Bernard’s. Sausages will be available for lunch. The children will need their own lunch if they don’t wish to have a sausage. Their permission note needs to be returned by Monday 15th May.

Literacy: Reading and Writing

In writing we are continuing to develop our formal letters to editor, (Mr Corrigan) to persuade him on an improvement for the school that will enhance our learning. Naplan

Year 5’s are completing Naplan Tasks this week.

Numeracy

We have continued to work on our addition and subtraction skills using word problems involving whole numbers and decimals. These skills have helped to solve equations with missing numbers, for example _____ + 34 = 63 + 13.

Religious Education

This week we congratulate the Year 4 students, Lucy and Hayden Cole who are receiving the Sacraments of Confirmation and Eucharist this weekend.

Homework

The children are reminded that their homework is due back this Friday May 12th.

Inter-School Sports

This Friday both St Pat’s Yellow St Pat’s Green will play each other in netball and football at the Barr. Come along and cheer on the students. Games commence at 2:00pm.

ART AND CRAFT NEWS

The children from Years Foundation through to 3 have decorated a Mothers' Day present for their Mum. These special secret surprises need to be placed in the heat of an oven for about twenty minutes or in front of a fire for a little longer. This should preserve the life of the present. Please note the present is purely decorative. Cheers and A Happy Mothers' Day David Capper
