Pavane, Op. 50
Gabriel Fauré was basically a lyricist whoexcelled in small, intimate forms – pianopieces, chamber music, works for smallchorus, and especially songs. Fauré himselfsaidthathismusicexemplified“theeminentlyFrench qualities of taste, clarity and senseof proportion.” He hoped to express “thetasteforclearthought, purityofform, andsobriety.”

The music slipsalmost imperceptively back to the melodicmaterialof thefirstsection, which isheardagaininaslightlyvariedform.

Fauré once described the Pavaneas “carefully wrought, but otherwiseunimportant.” Unimportant the work maybe, but it is music of a highly refined soul, musictotallydevoidofpomporglitter, yetimbuedwithirresistiblecharm.

toujours !On s’adore !
PAVANEIt’s Lindor! It’s Tircis! and all our conquerors! It’s Myrtil! It’s Lydia! The queens of our hearts! How they provoke us! How they are always
so proud! How they dare to rule over our destinies and
our days!Pay attention! Observe the beat!O the mortal injury! The cadence is slower! And the fall more certain! We shall beat back their cackles! We will soon be their stooges! They are so ugly! Such darling little faces! They are so foolish! Such coquettish airs! And it’s always the same, and so it shall
always be!We love them! We hate them! We speak ill of
their loves!Farewell, Myrtil! Eglé! Chloé! mocking demons! So it is farewell and good day to the tyrants of
our hearts!And good day!

The music heard at the 1888 premierewas, however, considerably different fromwhat isperformedatmostconcertstoday. There were no brass or woodwind partsat all; there were only five movements (no“Offertoire”or“Liberame,”whichmeantnobaritonesoloisteither); thesolo role in the“PieJesu”wassungbyaboysoprano;andthestrings (without violins) were probably justa handful in number to balance the chorus(boysandmenonly)ofabouttwenty.MuchaswethinkofFauré’sRequiemasamodelofrestraintandintimacy, itwasobviouslyevenmore so in its original version.

with your saints for ever, for you are compassionate.Grant them eternal rest, Lord, and may eternal light shine
upon them.
LIBERA MEDeliver me, Lord, from
everlasting deathon that awful daywhen heaven and earth will
be moved, when you will come to judge
the world by fire.
I am made to tremble and am afraid
because of the judgement and wrath to come.
That day, that day of wrath, of calamity and misery,a great and bitter day.
Lord, grant them eternal rest, and let perpetual light shine
upon them.
