P4S - A New StandardAdvantages of Sealed FAG HSS and HCS Spindle Bearings
Sealed FAG Spindle BearingsHSS and HCS- Maintenance Free and Lu-bricated for Life.
Grease is the common lubricant usedfor bearings in machine tool spindles. Itlowers lubrication and maintenancecosts, and improves the machinery envi-ronment to a large extent. Bearingswhich are greased for life present an eco-nomical design solution.
Sealed HCS and HSS bearing areavailable in all sizes up to 130 mm diam-eter.
FAG is the first manufacturer ofsealed spindle bearings that are ready toassemble, lubricated for life, and there-fore maintenance free.
The following important advantagesof these sealed bearings have been con-firmed many times by manufacturers ofmachine tools and users alike :
- ease of handling during assembly- no washing- no greasing- no danger of contamination during
greasing or assembly- high level of cleanliness in the bearing -
precondition for a long working life- the correct type and quantity of grease
in the bearing- the type and quantity of grease and
sealing system are suited to one another- no frictional losses - the RSD is a non
contact seal- good sealing action both from outside
and inside effects- the grease base oil remains in the
bearing- air flow and ventilation through the
bearing are greatly reduced- the grease neither dries out nor is it
contaminated by polluted air flow- since additional sealing can be simlified
the moment arm is reduced- the grease stays in the bearing if the
spindle is inclined during operation- faster replacement of bearing, - but not
at the cost of cleanliness in the bearing
- exchangeable with bearings from the 70and 719 series.
The large internal space between therotating parts and stationary seals allowsa relatively large amount of grease, actingas a reservoir to provide extended operat-ing life of the bearing.

Advantages of Hybrid Spindle Bearings
The service life of hybrid spindle bearings both with greaseand with oil lubrication is several times that of the life reachedby bearings with steel balls. Friction and adhesion between ce-ramic and steel, and consequently wear, are very low - speciallyat cold starts.
The high cleanliness standards in the area of rolling elementcontact is maintained with sealed bearings - preconditioned fora long bearing service life.
The sealing effect towards the inside and the outside retainsthe grease in the contact area. Contaminants cannot penetrateinto the bearing. Additionally damaging air flow through thebearing is reduced.
The speed is about 55 percent higher than that of series Bbearings and about 15 percent higher than that of the HShigh-speed spindle bearings.
The small ball design of the HC bearings and the ceramicball material being approximately 60% lighter than steel re-duces centrifugal force and friction. The resulting excellentrunning properties are improved further by the advantageousrunning condition in the rolling contact zone.
This is also true of sealed designs because the seals are non-contacting.
Hybrid bearings are protected against seizure during starvedlubrication or dry running conditions by their excellent emer-gency running properties of low adhesion and friction.

Bearing bore
At the same speed the operating temperature is lower thanthat of bearings with steel balls.
Temperatures are increased by friction and friction is lowerwith the ceramic-steel combination.
Due to the low thermal conductivity of ceramic material theball “keeps cool”. Thermal expansion and changes in preloadand thus friction remain small.
Surface quality and precision of the work-pieces are im-proved with hybrid bearings. The excellent results obtainedwith grinding machines confirms this statement. This can beexplained by a number of reasons including the high modulusof elasticity of ceramic material and the large number of smallballs which make the bearing very rigid.
The advantages of grease lubrication can be maintained upto high-speeds. Thus the high expense of a complex oil lubrica-tion system can be saved.
This is made possible by “cool running” through excellenttribological properties of the ceramic material, and in particu-lar the dissimilar materials in contact.
Experience shows that the working life of the grease isapprox. 5 times longer, resulting in extended working life ofthe hybrid bearing.

Spindle Bearings
Spindle Bearings
FAG Spindle bearings are single rowangular contact ball bearings of thehighest precision. Advantages offered bythe special design features of the contactangle, cage and internal geometry are- higher rigidity- optimum rotational accuracy- excellent speedability- low vibration output
In machine tools and textile machineconstruction and in many other areas ofapplication the tendency is towards everhigher rotational speeds and ever greaterprecision.Various types are available to suit a widerange of specific operating conditions.- FAG spindle bearings from the B719,
B70 and B72 series
- FAG high speed spindle bearings fromthe HS719 and HS70 series
- FAG hybrid spindle bearings from theHC719 and HC70 series.
All spindle bearings have a contact an-gle of 15º (type C) or 25º (type E) andare available either as a universal bearingor as a bearing set.
The envelope dimensions of highspeed (HS) and hybrid spindle bearings(HC) are identical to the B series spindlebearings. The design characteristics al-low extreme speeds, low friction and heatbuild-up, contributing to lower demandson the lubricant and a longer workinglife.
They are also available as sealed units(HSS or HCS spindle bearings).
All series are produced in high preci-sion P4S quality (running accuracy toprecision P2 and envelope dimensions toprecision P4).

Ball Screw Support Bearings
FAG ball screw support bearings havebeen developed especially for ball screwspindle support. They fulfil the require-ment for- high accuracy- greater rigidity- low friction- quick positional changes at high speed
FAG ball screw support bearings aremanufactured in the 02 (7602),03 (7603) size series and also the nar-rower BSB series.
FAG ball screw support bearings forball screw spindle support are producedin ISO P4 quality.
The tolerance of the diameters is thesame as those of the deep groove bearing,

the axial runout corresponds to the toler-ance values of the thrust bearings.
In order that the ball screw drivesachieve the desired high positional accu-racy in machine tools the bearings re-quire a high rigidity.
FAG ball screw support bearings forball screw drives achieve their rigiditythrough their internal design and built-in universal preload.
The assembly of many bearings in anDF or DB arrangement increases thepreload and stiffness of the bearing.
FAG ball screw support bearings forball screw drives exhibit low friction. Forthis reason a lower driving power is re-quired. Torque values are given in thebearing tables.
Lithium soap greases with EP addi-tives, for example FAG bearing greaseArcanol L135V have proved themselvesas lubricating greases.

Ball Screw Support Bearings
Ball Screw Spindle Support
Bearing Selection
The bearing must support the spindleaccurately with great axial rigidity. Formany years the FAG ball screw supportbearings with 60 degree contact angleand precision class P4 have proven them-selves for these requirements.
Each spindle end is supported by4 bearings FAG 7602025TVP in a Tan-dem, back to back arrangement.
The spindle is fixed at both ends andis tensioned in its ambient state, so thatthe operating temperature doesn’t causeany additional axial forces on the bear-ings through thermal expansion.
Bearing Dimensions
The size of the bearing is determinedby the application loads and the spindlespeed. In most cases ball screw drives are

driven without any lateral force, so thatthe axial force is the determining factorfor the dimensioning of the bearing.Prerequisites for attaining durability aregenerally favourable operating conditionsand high grade grease with EP additives.Individual applications can be confirmedby checking the hertzian contact stresscalculating the extended working life. The number of bearings determines theaxial rigidity.
Preload, Bearing Clearance
FAG ball screw support bearings fromthe 76020.., 76030.. and BSB series areavailable universally preloaded for instal-lation in either DF, DB or Tandem ar-rangements. The installation in DF orDB arrangements results in a specificpreload. The bearings have a preloadwhich achieves the high rigidity required.

Double Direction Angular Contact Thrust Ball Bearings
Double Direction Angular Contact Thrust Ball Bearings
Double direction angular contactthrust ball bearings were developed formachine tool spindles and are manufac-tured solely high precision. In the case ofmain spindles of machine tools thesebearings carry the axial forces. They arematched with the mounting dimensionsof the double row cylindrical roller bear-ing of the NN30 series, (page 48).
External Dimensions
Double direction angular contactthrust ball bearings are mounted next toa double row radial cylindrical rollerbearing. The nominal size of the externaldiameter is the same for both bearings. This simplifies the machining of the
housing bore. The tolerance for the ex-ternal diameter of the double directionangular contact thrust ball bearing is de-signed so that the bearings are clear inthe housing bore.
Bearing Design
Double direction angular contactthrust ball bearings have a contact angleof 60° and are axially preloaded. Theyare therefore especially well suited forhigh speeds. The contact angle and theaxial preload ensures good ball control, particularly under the centrifugal forceswith fast rotating spindles.
They have solid one piece brass cageswhich are ball guided.
Speedability
FAG double direction angular contactthrust ball bearings are suitable for highspeeds. Speed limit values for grease andoil lubrication are given in the bearingtables.
Lubrication
FAG double direction angular contactthrust ball bearings can be lubricatedwith grease or oil.
The outer ring O.D. has a lubricatinggroove in the centre with lubricatingholes. The application of the lubricantbetween the two rows of balls maximisesthe distribution of lubricant to bothraceways.

Bearing Selection
The radial and axial forces are sup-ported separately. Double row cylindri-cal roller bearings are incorporated as ra-dial bearings; on the drive side aFAG NN3024ASK.M.SP and aNN3020ASK.M.SP on the oppositeside.
The double direction angular contactthrust ball bearings FAG 234424M.SPlocates the spindle axially. This bearinghas a set preload making adjustments un-necessary. Due to the external diametersof the radial and axial bearings havingthe same nominal size machining of thebore for the housing is simplified. Thetolerance of the double direction angular
contact thrust ball bearings is such thatthere is a clearance fit in the housing.
Lubrication, Sealing
Oil re-circulation lubrication. TheLabyrinth seal on the work side is madeup of ready to assemble components. The inner labyrinth ring retains the lu-bricating oil, whilst the outer labyrinthring excludes the cutting fluid.
Rigidity
To attain good machining results thebearings for machine tool spindles mustexhibit high rigidity as well as high preci-sion; this means that they must run pre-cisely and must allow only slight deflec-tion under load. The double directionangular contact thrust ball bearings gaintheir rigidity through their internal de-sign and preload.

Cylindrical Roller Bearings
Cylindrical Roller Bearings
FAG produces cylindrical roller bear-ings of super precision in the series N10and NN30.
The double row bearings are used inapplications where a :- radially stiff- high capacity- high precision support is required.
Any axial load would be taken up bythe double direction angular contactthrust bearings of the series 2344 (seepage 42).
The single row bearing would bemostly used as the ‘loose’ bearing incombination with FAG spindle bearingsas ‘fixed’ bearings.
Bearing Design
Double row cylindrical roller bearingshave a high load carrying capacity thanksto the high number of cylindrical rollersin each row.
The cage is of robust solid brass con-struction.
Single row cylindrical roller bearingsalso have a solid brass cage and are spe-cially designed for the demands of highspeed spindles.
The bearing bore is tapered (taper1:12). The desired radial preload or ra-dial clearance can be set by an axial ad-justment on the conical shaft.
Lubrication
FAG cylindrical roller bearings can belubricated with either grease or oil.
For this purpose the double row bear-ings have a lubricating groove and lubri-cating hole in the middle of the outerring.

Bearing Selection
The bearings must support the spin-dle both axially and radially precisely andrigidly. The bearings are preloaded andmanufactured to super precision toler-ances.
Work side: 1 spindle bearing set FAGB7018E.T.P4S.TBTL in a Tandem, backto back arrangement as a fixed bearing.
Diven side: single row cylindricalroller bearings FAG N1016K.M1.SP as afloating bearing. The arrangement issuited to high speeds and high cuttingefficiency.
Bearing Dimensions
The bearing size is determined princi-pally by the required spindle rigidity, i.e.the spindle diameter.
The fatigue life of the bearing istaken into consideration during selec-
tion, however, in practice it does not fig-ure greatly. As the grease working lifeand the Hertzian contact stresses inthe rolling bearing are the decisive fac-tors.
Main spindles do not as a rule fail onaccount of fatigue, but instead because ofwear.
Preload, Bearing Clearance
FAG spindle bearings are delivered insets for different arrangements. Theyhave a set light preload suitable for theapplication requirement.
The cylindrical roller bearing is set al-most without clearance by press fittingthe tapered inner ring on to the spindle.
Lubrication, Sealing
The bearings are lubricated for lifewith FAG bearing grease Arcanol L74V.
The free space in spindle bearings isfilled to ca. 35 % and with cylindricalroller bearings to ca. 20 %.
Sealing is accomplished via a labyrinthwith discrete narrow radial gaps.
