Introduction• Car-based urban transport systems have proved unsustainable,

consuming excessive energy, affecting the health of populations and delivering a declining level of service despite increasing investments.

• The tailpipe emissions of vehicles as a consequence of the incomplete burning of carbon result in multiple products including Carbon Monoxide and Particulate matter (PM)

Instruments and Methods• Sampler (with filter) for measuring Black Carbon• Carbon Monoxide sensor• Aethalometer to measure real-time Black Carbon• Manometer to measure pressure of sampler• Video Cameras to capture real time traffic flow• NOx analyzer to measure Nitrogen oxide compounds• Condensation Particle Counter

Student Goals• Obtain fundamental knowledge about traffic engineering and

environmental engineering• Learn to design data plan/ experiment set • Become familiar with tools and techniques in analyzing traffic

and pollutants• Understand traffic operation impact on carbon emission
