The Beacons were poised for the upset leading for much of the game, includ-ing a 41-27 lead with 41 seconds left in the first half. Eastern Oregon’s only lead of thefirst half was a 2-0 advantage to begin the game. A pair of Peterson free throws with13:38 remaining in regulation was the next EOU lead. Peterson led Eastern with 16points and eight rebounds. The junior shot 6 for 11 from the field. JC Cook contributed15 points and Jason Mumm added 12 points and eight rebounds. EOU finished 36 per-cent from the field and 14 of 24 from the free-throw line. The leading three-point shoot-ing team in NAIA Div. 2 was held to 6 for 26 from behind the arc.

LA GRANDE, Ore. -- The No. 9 Eastern Oregon University
men's basketball team beat rallied to a 73-66 win over No.
14 Northwest University Saturday.
The Mountaineers (10-1) (2-0) move closer to matching
their best start in school history at 13-1 in the 2007-08
season. Eastern trailed by as many as 10 points in the
second half before it made its comeback for the victory.
A Jordan Call three-pointer with 2:57 left in the first half
gave Northwest a 39-29 lead. The Eagles led 40-33 at
halftime. A pair of Stedman Richardson free throws gave
NU a 47-37 lead with 16:31 remaining in regulation. EOU
went on a 12-2 run over the five minutes and tied the score
at 49.
The score went back and forth over the next three minutes until the Mountaineers opened a 56-56
score to a 67-58 lead with 3:19 left in the game after a Jason Mumm three-pointer.
Thomas McCarthy led Eastern Oregon with 18 points off of the bench. The senior was 6 for 10
from the field including 3 of 7 from behind the perimeter. Mumm added 12 points, and Travares
Peterson scored 10 points and recorded a team-high nine rebounds. Cody Thurmond threw a
team-high five assists.
Greg Peters scored a game-high 19 points to lead Northwest (7-2) (1-1). He was 8 of 11 from the
field and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Call finished with 12 points, and Stedman
Richardson added 10 points and five assists.
After shooting 36 percent from the field in the first half, EOU shot 48 percent in the second half.
The Mountaineers finished 36 percent from the three-point range. Eastern outrebounded the
Eagles, 43 to 29, and had 16 assists to Northwest’s 15. The top two unselfish teams in the CCC
squared off in the game, as Northwest averaged a league-best 17.7 assists per game, and
Eastern averaged 17.3. NU was 40 percent from the field, and 5 of 21 from behind the perimeter.

men’s basketball team knocked off The Evergreen State
College Friday, 77-59, to open Cascade Conference play.
On ‘70s Night in Quinn Coliseum, the Mountaineers (9-1)
wore throwback uniforms and won their third straight game
behind 22 points from JC Cook. The Canby, Ore. native
returned to the starting lineup after an ankle injury earlier in
the season. The senior shot 8 for 14 from the field, and 5

Eastern’s Jamar Johnson scored in double digits for the
ninth time this season finishing with 18 points. The Portland,
Ore. native shot 7 for 10 from the field and 4 of 6 from behind the arc. He had a team-high eight
rebounds. Cody Thurmond added 13 points and seven assists.
A Cook three-pointer with 42 seconds left in the first half gave EOU its largest lead of the half at
39-23. The Mountaineers had a 39-26 lead at halftime. The final 18-point margin was the largest
lead of the night. Eastern led through the entirety of the game.
The Geoducks (1-7) lost its seventh consecutive game after opening the season with a win.
Evergreen finished with three double digit scorers Friday led by Marice Tolliver’s 17 points. The
junior finished with a game-high 11 rebounds. Johnny Sarysz and Ramone Johnson added 12
and 10 points respectively.
Eastern Oregon improved to 9-0 this season when outrebounding its opponent. EOU had 38
rebounds to Evergreen State’s 37. The Mountaineers had a 21 to 9 assist advantage, but turned
the ball over 15 times compared to TESC’s 13. Evergreen outscored Eastern 30 to 14 in the
paint.

DIALING LONG DISTANCEEastern is hitting its share of shots
from behind the perimeter this season. TheMountaineers are first in NAIA Div. 2 in three-pointers made per game (10.3), and in totalthree-pointers made (268). EOU is 10th in thecountry in three-point percentage (38%).Jamar Johnson is third in the country with his46 percent shotting from three-point range.Thomas McCarthy is seventh in NAIA Div. 2with 84 three-pointers, making 3.2 per gamewhich is seventh in the nation.
RECORD WATCHThe Mountaineers are doing their
share of setting new records this season.EOU has already broke the school mark forthree-pointers in a single season nad singlegame records of threes made, points, andrebounds. Eastern is 309 points shy of break-ing the record for points in a season. ThomasMcCarthy needs to make five three-pointers tobreak Ryan Orton’s 15-year-old school recordof 88 three-pointers in a single season. Thesenior has hit 84 of his 202 three-pointers thisseason. The Prineville, Ore. native has con-nected on 179 of his 457 career three-point-ers. Mark Carollo holds the school careerrecord when he made 210 of his 606 shots.
THE TWENTY WIN CLUBEastern has clinched its fifth straight
20-win season. Before the five-year streak,the Mountaineers had four 20-win seasons inthe 81-year history of men’s basketball, withthe last coming in 1965-66. This season’ssquad became the 20th team to reach 16 winsin school history. The 2007-08 team had theschool’s best record at 26-6. That team was17-3 after 20 games, and started 25-4.

climbed to No. 13 in the NAIA Div. 2 Top 25 Monday. TheMountaineers avoided a pair of upset bids last weekend withwins over Corban and Northwest Christian. EOU rallied from dou-ble-digit deficits in each game for the victories. Eastern rides thelongest winning streak in the Cascade Collegiate Conference,five games, to No. 18 Northwest University Friday. Easternappears in the Top 25 for a school-record 19th straight time. TheMountaineers have been in the Top 25 in 25 of the last 26 polls.EOU has been in the Top 25 in every poll dating back to last sea-son’s preseason poll on Oct. 26 when it received votes. TheMountaineers had their best preseason ranking in the 2008-09season when they started at No. 6. EOU climbed to No. 3 in thenational poll that season, the highest in school history.

LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARIESEastern Oregon is one of five teams to have made it
