Cement clinker (UN CPC Code: 37430) is a solid material produced in the manufacture of portland cement as an intermediary product. Clinker occurs as lumps or nodules, usually 3 millimetres to 25 millimetres in diameter.
Portland cement clinker is ground to a fine powder and used as the binder in many cement products. A little gypsum is sometimes added. Clinker, if stored in dry conditions, can be kept for several months without appreciable loss of quality.

DEFINITION OF THE SYSTEM BOUNDARY
A1 : Raw MaterialThis stage includes raw material extraction and pre-treatment processes before production.
A2 : Raw Material SupplyThis stage is relevant for delivery of raw materials and intermediary products to factory gate. Transport direct from producer or producer to warehouses/intermediaries then to the factory were taken into account. Forklift usage within the factory is also included.
A3 : ManufacturingManufacturing prosses comprises of heating a homogeneous mixture of raw materials in a rotary kiln at high temperature. The products of the chemical reaction aggregate together at their sintering temperature, about 1,450 °C.
A4 : Transport to SiteThis stage involves transportation of portland cement clinker to the construction sites. The average distance was calculated as 5500 km.

DEFINITION OF THE SYSTEM BOUNDARY MORE INFORMATION
This study is conducted according to the guidelines of ISO 14040/44 and the requirements given in the Product Category Rules (PCR) document for Construction Products with reference to EN 15804 and the general program guidelines by The International EPD System.
The inventory for the LCA study is based on the 2019 production figures for portland cement clinker manufactured by Medcem in their production plants located in Mersin, Turkey.
This LCA was modelled with SimaPro 9 LCA software using the impact factors and the latest version of the Ecoinvent database Ver. 3.5 for secondary data and Turkish Life Cycle Inventory Database (TLCID) developed by Turkish Centre for Sustainable Production Research and Design (SÜRATAM) for local data.
The results of the LCA with the indicators as per EPD requirement are given in the LCA result tables. All energy calculations were obtained using Cumulative Energy Demand (LHV) methodology, while fresh water use is calculated with selected inventory flows in SimaPro according to the PCR.
There are no co-products in the production. Hence, there is no need for co-product allocation.
Hazardous and non-hazardous waste amounts were also allocated from 2019 total waste amounts. Transport is allocated according to tonnages for all raw materials bought by Medcem.
All the waste resulting from the main production and related processes is managed as per Waste Management Plan of Medcem in accordance with Turkish laws and regulations.
No substances included in the Candidate List of Substances of Very High Concern for authorization under the REACH regulations are present in conductors. either above the threshold for registration with the European Chemicals Agency or above 0.1 % (wt/wt).
