!Buenas!
My name is Jeanette and I am from Germany. For a duration of 5 months I studied at the University of
Cantabria as an Erasmus-student wanting to get to know Spain and its people. And of course I aimed to improve
my language skills.
My circle of friends consisted of people from all over the world but not many Spaniards, which is why the
opportunity to work as an auxiliary partner at the UIMP, getting to know the youth of the country, was a great
addition to my stay in Santander. Over lunch, dinner or just a coffee I enjoyed many chats about tradition,
culture, history, the education system, globalisation and the things that the youth of the world have in common.
This way I gathered inside knowledge from the perspective of people from my guest-country, especially about
linguistic differences which would have been kept from me if I didn´t work for the UIMP.
The food was very tasty, I got to see the inside of the Magdalena Palace and in general I had good fun; thanks
to Ana and thanks to the UIMP.
! Hasta pronto!

• My name is Bobby, and I live near Washington, D.C. in the United States. From January to March 2009 I participated in the English Language Immersion program as a conversation assistant during lunch, dinner and student activities. Being a conversation assistant was a great opportunity for me because I was in Santander to study Spanish and Spanish culture, and over the course of three months, I met people from every region of the country. Although we spoke English during the meals, I definitely learned a lot about Spain from all the friends I made. Not only did the students tell me about where they’re from and what their hometowns are like, but I also learned about Spanish life directly when we would go out together at night. I would show them the fun places to go in Santander at night, and they would show me what Spanish people do when they go out. They taught me about
Spain, but I also taught them about the United States and the English language. Teaching them words and phrases in English that they wanted to know and helping them improve their English in general was probably my favorite
part about being a conversation assistant.
I highly recommend coming to Santander to do an intensive week of immersion in the English language. The conversation assistants and the program directors are fantastic, the city is beautiful, the residences are great, and most importantly, it’s a lot of fun. I have participated for nine or ten weeks, and I think it has made my time in Spain all the better.
