This course is designed to meet the guidelines set forth by the Virginia Standards ofLearning for Tenth Grade English (doe.virginia.gov). All tenth grade HCPS students arerequired to complete an end-of-course (EOC) researched writing assessment. Students willbe required to draft and plan an essay and support a thesis statement with cited evidenceprovided through text and infographics.
In this course, students can expect a tremendous focus on the following :
Classroom norms will be developed by students during the first week of class. However, it isthe expectation that students will demonstrate trust, respect, and responsibility asproductive and contributing members of the class.
Students are responsible for checking and completing work missed while absent. The HCPSattendance policy will apply to all students.
Turning in late work should be a rare occasion. If a student needs to turn in an assignmentafter the due date, he or she should speak to the instructor. Penalties may be assigned tolate work through point deductions, but this also depends on the reason for the delayedsubmission. Because assignments carry different values, deductions will vary. In any case,they will be fair and balanced to reflect the nature of the assignment. Please work with meand keep me informed.
Cell phones may be used for learning purposes at the teacher's discretion.
Though I do not anticipate academic dishonesty, it does occur from time to time. Thenature of the work completed in this class does not lend itself to copying work or cheating. If it happens, students are expected to complete alternative work and potentially bear theconsequences of a deduction in points. If academic dishonesty becomes a reoccurringproblem, students can expect to speak to an administrator. More than anything, I hope tocreate a space where students do not feel compelled to turn in plagiarized work.
The ten point grading scale established by HCPS will be followed.
