Who We Are and What We Do
The Convention and Visitors Bureau is a departmentof the City of Columbia. Unlike other citydepartments, the CVB is funded by a 4% hoteloccupancy tax. The CVB uses the tax revenue to bring visitors to Columbia by attracting meetings, conventions and events to our city.
We offer a variety of services that will assist you in theplanning process:
Organizing a meeting or
convention can be adaunting task. Whether
you are organizing a meeting for 20 or 2,000, we want you
to think of us as your partner inthe planning process.
WhyMeetingsAreGoodFor Columbia
Conventions are big business for Columbia, generatingmore than $35 million annually in revenue for our city.Conventions are often booked here because a localresident involved in an organization works to bring theevent to Columbia. Visitors not only create revenue forour hotels and restaurants, they also buy gas, go shoppingand use many of the services that our beautiful city has tooffer. Holding a conference or event in Columbia is agreat way to showcase our city to other professionalorganizations and their members.
The Columbia Convention and Visitors Bureau providesa full range of complimentary services for meetings, conventions and events. Services are based on groupsize, hotel room nights generated and other specialconsiderations.
Columbia hosts many types of events and meetingsthroughout the year. Before you begin planning yourmeeting, give us a call. We can help you choose a datethat will maximize attendance and save you money.
The Convention and Visitors Bureau is not able to solicitsponsorships for events or negotiate directly with hotelson your behalf. We will be happy to answer anyquestions you might have about contract terms or thenegotiation process.
• We will send your meeting specifications toarea hotels and compile their proposals foryour review.
• We are able to arrange visits to lodgingand exhibition facilities and schedulemeetings for you with their staff.
• We can also provide assistance with pressrelease distribution, ideas for spouseprograms and much more.

Hey Erin!
Wish you could have been with us in Columbia, MO last weekend. We fell in love withthis town! We started our getaway on Friday in this area near campus called TheDistrict. In just one block we found a coffee shop, vintage clothing store, organic foodcafé, an incredible Missouri crafts shop and a free trade shop. It’ s like that onevery block- you never know what you’ ll find next. You wouldn’ tbelieve how many specialty restaurants there are just in TheDistrict. It was almost impossible to choose one, but we finallydid, and it was so good! I was too full for dessert, but Iconvinced Dave to share his with me. Delicious!
After dinner, we strolled around The District. Of course I was scopingout the windows for my Saturday shopping! Dave wouldn’ t stop teasingme- threatening to make our Saturday morning bike ride on the MKTtrail last all day so I wouldn’ t have time to shop. As we walked, music was drifting out of several nightclubs. We found one that had afantastic rooftop patio. Live music, a beautiful view of Columbia, and mywonderful husband for company. Does life get any better?
The next day we were up bright and early to hit the MKT trail onour bikes. We brought our bikes, but the clerk at the hotel told us thatyou can rent a bike for the day too. Columbia has so many different trailsfor walking and biking. I definitely want to go back soon to try another one.
Shopping was amazing! I found interesting antiques, really fun jewelry, anawesome purse and of course, a Mizzoushirt. Dave even found a store fullof enough chocolate to keephim busy for quite a while!
Erin, you and Mark have tofind some time to travel toColumbia with us. I saw someart galleries I want to visittoo, especially the one whereyou can watch the artists atwork on Saturday mornings.
I’ m checking my calendar rightnow to see when I can go back. The only problem is that Columbiahas so many different festivals andevents, I can’ t decide which oneto choose!
See you soon,
Natalie

The concept for the Renaissance Club came from an initiative of the Chamber of Commerce and Convention and Visitors Bureau (CVB). About 10 years ago, Lorah Steiner, Director of the CVB and Don Laird, President of the Chamber of Commerce decided to support the arts in Columbia by jointly purchasing one piece of original art, locally, each year.
Through the next decade, the CVB and Chamber purchased paintings, sculptures, weavings and other works of art, creating a more inviting work environment and enhancing theWalton building’s appearance and ambiance.
Columbia has the potential to be one of the top art destinations in the U.S. The RenaissanceClub can help us reach that goal. The arts have had more impact on urban revitalization than almostany other factor and have been the cornerstone of redevelopment in many cities across the country.
Our community isin the midst of an arts
resurgence. With the arrival of Orr Street studios and theplanned Warehouse Lofts and Studios, we now havepermanent space for working artists. New galleries haveopened and more are on the way. Your participation in theRenaissance Club will help to assure the continued growth ofthe arts in Columbia.
Imagine the impact of 100 businesses each purchasing onepiece of art, locally, every year! Whether those purchases are$50 ceramics or $4000 paintings, the combined buying powerwould help assure that our galleries thrive, that our residentartists stay and that new artists consider making Columbiatheir home. In time, Columbia can become an arts destinationon par with Santa Fe, New Mexico or Asheville, N.C.
We invite you to become a member of the RenaissanceClub by pledging to purchase one piece of original art, locally, each year. You’ll bring something unique and special to yourworkplace and, through your involvement, to your community.
