Data Protection Challenges for Oracle
1) Disk and Tape Capacity required to store many copies of
Oracle backups
2) Bandwidth required to move large database backups
across WAN for Disaster Recovery
3) Oracle database recovery operations demand extremely
reliable disk storage let alone countless tape media
4) Integration and management of RMAN and backup
infrastructure

EMC BRS for Oracle Data Protection
1) Deduplication Enables Online Retention– Efficiently store weeks of backups on disk for rapid database
restores
– Reduce dependence on tape for Oracle data protection
2) Replication Drives WAN-efficient Disaster Recovery– Time-to-DR minimized, enabling offsite recovery of databases
3) Data Invulnerability Architecture Ensures Reliable Recovery– Provides much higher levels of hardware and software protection
than conventional tape, RAID and file systems
4) Flexible Integration with Oracle– Provides multiple interface options (NAS, Boost, VTL) for use
with Oracle data-protection best practices

Data Domain for Oracle RMANBoost versus NFS/dNFS
Consider RMAN with Data Domain Boost when:– Full backups are recommended;
especially w/ high change rate *
– Time to scan entire database is not a concern
– NFS security or mount point failure is a concern
– RMAN managed DR is a requirement
– Oracle 10g and 11g environments
Consider RMAN via NFS/dNFS with Data Domain when:– Incremental merge is preferred
when change rate is low *
– Time to scan entire database is a concern
– Network link failure is rare or job restart is acceptable
– Backup/Restore is the only requirement; DR is not
– When the environment is Oracle 11g with dNFS
* Oracle recommends full if incremental is more than 20%
DBA’s have complete control over their own Database Backups & Recoveries and with a greater number of backup copies stored

The EMC BRS, RMAN Catalog Assessment
Engage with your local EMC BRS Systems Engineer to better understand the health and statistics of your Oracle backups
Identify slow database backups and frequent failures
Helps to provide sizing inputs to accurately size a new Oracle tape free backup solution
– Size of 1 day’s full backup across all databases– Size of 1 day’s archive log backups across all databases– Identify daily change rate
Identify whether compression and/or encryption are in use

A happy customer…
“Thanks to Data Domain, backup performance has been significantly enhanced, while data storage requirements
have been reduced by 96 percent…The DBAs have control of their backups and they are very happy with that.”

and another happy customer…
“In a private cloud, you have to look at the storage and backup as hand in glove because of the shared infrastructure. With EMC
Data Domain, its been a seamless process to integrate backup with our virtualized infrastructure. We haven’t had a single
issue, and our Oracle backups and restores are so much faster and easier to manage.”

Oracle dNFS (Direct Network File System)• New in Oracle 11g• To enable, you must still NFS mount
the remote storage on NAS or Data Domain (using OS).• Oracle configuration files tell Oracle
database to manage NFS read/write via Oracle kernel rather than operating system.• dNFS aggregates NIC cards with no
OS config needed. Great performance.
