Parish Articles & Insights
I recall many years ago when I was a young priest and the first pastor I served with very often would
speak to people calling them ‘a child of God.’ One day there were a few people gathered outside church on a
Sunday morning, I was in the group as was my pastor. He was speaking to one man in particular, a strapping
six footer, weighing at least 260 pounds, and the pastor called him a ‘child of God.’ The young man began to
laugh (a little) before the pastor stopped him short and asked, “What’s the matter, you are a child of God.”
That led us into a little sermonette with the pastor expounding on the great privilege of our status as God sees
us, that we are by nature, creatures of God, but by God’s grace, we are, each and every one of us, a child of
God.
Today’s magnificent passage from one of St. John’s letters to the early Christins community, while it
is one of my favorites, is a very profound bit of theology in just a few lines of scripture. The last line of this
passage is also filled with promise in these words, that one day, ‘we shall be like Him for we shall see Him
as He is.’
William Barclay, the noted Scottish scripture scholar in one of his books gives us a paraphrase of this
passage. I’d like to leave you with that paraphrase as it sort of tugs at our heartstrings while deepening our
wealth of knowledge of God’s love for us. Here it is…
“Behold the amazing gift of love the Father hath bestowed on us, the sinful sons of men, to call us sons
of God!
Concealed as yet the honour lies, by this dark world unknown; a world that knew not when He came,
even God’s eternal Son.
High is the rank we now possess; but higher we shall rise; though what we shall hereafter be is hid from
mortal eyes.
Our souls, we know, when He appears, shall bear His image bright; for all His glory, full disclosed, shall
open to our sight.
A hope so great, and so divine, may trials well endure; and purge the soul from sense to sin, as Christ
Himself is pure.”
I hope you ponder these lines and bring to mind their truth and beauty, you may be blessed with an ever
deeper realization that you, your children, all your friends, and even an enemy are all God’s loving children.
Continued Easter blessings! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Fr. Walt!
See What Love the Father
Has Bestowed on Us !
by Fr. Walt Wainwright
Perhaps too often the second reading in the
Sunday scriptures is overlooked, but when we
come to a passage like the one we have today,
it would be a great injustice to let it pass us by.
The reading begins with the word ‘see’ not
referring to our physical sense of sight but rather
calling us to remember the great privilege we
have that God’s love for us is so great that He
looks upon us and calls us ‘His children.’

Save the Date: Forty Hour Devotions
Thursday, May 31 thru Saturday, June 2, 2018
Forty Hour Devotion is solemn exposition of the Blessed Sacrament that continues around the clock for
forty hours. It will be held in St. Casimir’s Church beginning with Mass on Thursday, May 31 at 5:30pm and
concluding on Saturday morning, June 2 with Mass at 9:30am.
Forty Hour Devotion provides a wonderful opportunity for the spiritual growth of an individual person
and the parish as well. In our world, temptation and evil abounds, devotion to the Mass and Our Lord in the
Holy Eucharist have declined.
Through hours spent in Eucharistic devotion one can adore Christ, pray in the presence of the Lord,
express our sorrow for our sins, and experience oneness with Him that leads us to participation in the Mass
which is central to Catholic Life.
Why 40 Hours?
St. Charles Borromeo speaks as if this was very ancient based on Biblical times:
# 40 – the hours Jesus spent in the tomb, from His death on Good Friday until the Resurrection on
Easter Sunday morning
# 40 – Jesus appeared to his disciples 40 days after His resurrection from the dead
# 40 – the 40 days of rain during the time of the flood
# 40 – the years the Israelites spent on the way to the Promised Land
# 40 – the days of Jesus’ fasting before His public ministry
# 40 – Moses on Mt. Sinai receiving God’s Law – the 10 Commandments As we prepare to formulate a new parish with the title of: The Most Holy Name of Jesus,
let us ask Jesus for blessings for ourselves, our family and our new parish.
PLEASE NOTE: 40 Hours have to be covered by people willing to spend a half hour, an hour or a variety
of times in church so the exposed Blessed Sacrament is never left unattended. There will be hours for private
prayer and communal prayer opportunities. Organizations will soon be contacted to ask for participation by its
members. There will be sign-up sheets in all churches. Please take time to be with Our Lord.!

Our Free Spaghetti Supper is Wednesday,
May 16th from 4:30p.m. - 6:30 p.m. We are
fortunate enough again this year to have Pine City
Scout Troop #43 and a group from Notre Dame to
help us serve the meal, but we still need a set up
crew from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. and a relief crew from
6:30 to 8:00 p.m. And of course, we need Italian
bread and your famous brownies and cookies. Most
of all, we need you to come & enjoy a great meal and
fellowship. For more information or to volunteer,
contact Tom Petzke at 426-2313. Thank you.
Special Guest Speaker: Fr. Victor Warkulwiz, M.S.S.
Fr. Victor Warkulwiz from the Missionary
Priests of the Blessed Sacrament will be our guest,
speaking at all Masses this weekend, April 21-22 on
the benefits and necessity of Perpetual Adoration in
our parish.
Fr. Warkulwiz resides in the Archdiocese of
Philadelphia. He has taken his message of Perpetual
Adoration to several hundred parishes in 47 states,
Canada, and elsewhere. Fr. Victor has dedicated
himself to visiting a parish every weekend where the
desire to establish or maintain Perpetual Eucharistic
Adoration has been expressed. The fruits of his
labor have been bountiful and include a spiritual
renewal within each parish.
Please remember that Perpetual Adoration in a
parish is not just for a day, a week, a month or year.
Rather it is for always. It is not temporary, but
ongoing, lasting, permanent. St. John Paul II
said: "Our essential commitment in life is to grow
spiritually in the climate of the Holy Eucharist."
There is no greater love given to Catholics than
Christ present in the Eucharist. Please do not miss
hearing Fr. Warkulwiz. His homily is inspiring and
has touched the hearts of thousands of Catholics in
bringing them to a deeper understanding and love
of the Blessed Sacrament.
Mary Gardens Information
May is our Mother Mary's month. We are offering a chance to start a Mary Garden. Each flower has a special meaning to our Mother. During the month of May, a certificate for $5 can be exchanged at Chamberlain Acres for your choice of one of five plants that we have chosen this year. These are: impatiens, snap dragon, alyssum, marigolds, and zinnia. Watch for the meaning why these were chosen in next week's bulletin along with a Mary Garden Prayer and when the certificates will be available at Masses.
NOCTURNAL ADORATION SOCIETY
“Until you know deep inside that Jesus thirsts for you – you can’t begin to know who He wants to be for you. Or who He wants you to be for Him.” (St. Mother Teresa) Please be with us to deepen your joy of a loving, personal relationship with Jesus. Our prayer is a special adaptation of The Liturgy of the Hours, and includes exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, psalms, spiritual readings, prayers, and silent adoration. Everyone is welcome, on Saturday, April 28, 8:00 to 9:00 PM, at Ss. Peter & Paul Church. We meet on the last Saturday each month.
CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL (CMA) UPDATE
Many of you may know that the annual Diocesan Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) carries with it a goal that must be met, either through parishioner contributions or, if we fall short of the goal, through parish operational income. Currently, each of our three parishes falls short of the goal set by the Diocese (the Diocese did reduce the goal of each parish by $2000 at the beginning of the campaign after an appeal by parish leadership). Next weekend (April 28/29), we will make one last push to reduce the amount we must pay to the Diocese at the beginning of June. Envelopes will be available at each church. If you haven’t made a contribution to the 2017 / 2018 CMA, please consider it. If you have contributed (and we are most grateful for those who have) and are able to contribute a little more, any amount is appreciated. The answer to the question “What does the Diocese do for us in Elmira?” is, in part: offer guidance and direction in the areas of Holy Family Catholic School, the ongoing work of Liturgy, Human Resources issues, Faith Formation assistance and Sacramental Preparation, training of priests and deacons who may serve us in the future (as many have in the past), legal assistance, processing annulments, marriage preparation, ongoing study and formation opportunities for the pastoral staff through classes and workshops, etc. Again, we thank all who have contributed to the CMA, and for those who haven’t, please consider it next weekend.

Mass Intentions -
and a Mass Intention ‘policy’:
We take Mass Intentions at the Parish Office
at 1010 Davis Street for all the Elmira Catholic
Churches, as well as the monthly Masses that Fr.
Scott celebrates at the Chemung County Nursing
Facility (CCNF), Woodbrook, Villa Serene and
Flannery Towers.
Due to the limited number of Masses and priest
availability, and to be fair to all parish families, we
ask that families only schedule (2) Masses a year.
Family members may be combined in one Mass
Intention.
The Mass book and schedule fills up very
quickly. In an effort to make Mass Intentions
available all year (without the book filling up too
quickly), we open the book and schedule only (2)
months at a time.
Here is our Schedule for Mass Intentions:
March 15 will begin taking Masses for May & June
May 1 will begin taking Masses for July & August
July 15 will begin taking Masses for Sept & Oct
Sept 1 will begin taking Masses for Nov & Dec
Nov 15 will begin taking Masses for Jan & Feb
Jan 2 will begin taking Masses for Mar & April
Sanctuary Lights and Bread & Wine offerings are
available all year and scheduled upon request.

Caring for God’s Creation
Caring for Our Common Home
“The earth, our home, is beginning to look
more and more like an immense pile of filth.
Our industrial system, at the end of its cycle
of production and consumption, has not yet
developed the capacity to absorb and reuse waste
and by-products. We have not yet managed to adopt a circular model
of production capable of preserving resources for present and future
generations, while limiting as much as possible the use of non-renewable
resources, moderating their consumption, maximizing their efficient use,
reusing and recycling them. A serious consideration of this issue would
be one way of counteracting the throwaway culture which affects the entire
planet.” ~ Pope Francis, Laudato Si: On Care For Our Common Home
This Earth Day (April 22) commit to examining how you and your family
can move away from a throwaway culture.
