Dr. Howe's Presentation on Presentations:Eddie Adams' Siagon Execution (1968)
best practices, do-s and don't-s, tips and tricks forfabulous and informative presentations
Eddie Adams, Saigon Execution (1968). Newseum.
1968. The Tet Offensive, later understood to be the
turning point of the Vietnam War, had just taken place.
Promised a “citizen uprising” in favor of the US,which did not materialize,
public sentiment was turning rapidly against the conflict.
The US was no longer focused on winning the war,but on getting out of it.
“As public opinion shifted so did the image of the war in news magazine photos.”
--Michael Sherer, “Vietnam War Photos and Public Opinion” (391)
According to John Long, a news photograph is powerful because it captures
a moment.
This photograph helpedconvince Americans that the South Vietnamese and the US military were, as Andy Grundberg writes,
“doing more harm than good against an indigenous insurgency” sponsored by the North Vietnamese.
But...
what momentdoes this image
actually document?
The executioner, Brig. Gen. Loan, is captured at the moment he shot aViet Cong prisoner
who had murdered a military official, his wife, and his
six children.
Whatever our personal beliefs,it is important to put ourselves in others' shoes
before we judge another's actions.
Consider the context.
Do your research.
Be responsible readers of your world.
Eddie Adams felt the American news media used the image without clearly describing its context:
"[H]ow do you know you wouldn't have pulled that trigger
yourself? You have to put yourself in that situation…
It's a war.”
Consider the context. Do your research.
Be responsible readers of your world.
