Teaching Philosophy
Communications is a constantly changing industry, the jobs of today may not exist tomorrow, and thus we must provide baseline knowledge through hands-on experience.
I believe that if I empower students with the background and skills they need to find answers to implement their projects I have been successful.
This is done by engaging the students in “real world” projects and discussions that have application far beyond the classroom.
I have found that students are responsive to the opportunities to create elements that could be used in a portfolio or in the job search process.
These activities have included the creation of comprehensive promotion and communication campaign plans, maintaining personal blogs, presenting their finding to their peers and developing a wide range of communication tactical elements.
I have discovered my passion is sharing the knowledge I have amassed in the professional world in the classroom.
I am in a unique position to understand how technology has changed this field - with the widespread use of the internet to social and digital media - and to have been on the leading edge of the application of these society changing events.
I look forward to helping more students find their way in the communications field and to the lessons they will teach me along the way
My teaching philosophy is best expressed in a quote by Albert Einstein …
“Know where to find the information and how to use it.
That’s the secret of success.”

“Professor Oser was a phenomenal Photoshop instructor.
Her knowledge of the program enabled her to help each student within a few seconds of hearing the problem ... we ventured into in-class assignments which kept the course load at more of an introductory level, which was nice. It wasn’t too overwhelming, but it was more than I was used to; a good stepping stone to the larger course loads I will have in the future.
My knowledge of Photoshop definitely increased due to this course. I would love to see courses of the same format for other Adobe products ...” COM202
“Professor Oser has been my favorite professor this semester. Even though I already had previous experience with the content that is covered in the course, she has helped me develop a basic
understanding of coding and knowledge on configuring my website to SEO standards. She even asked me to even help other students that were in need of assistance. Overall, I enjoyed
her and the class and I hope to have future classes with her when it comes to Mass Communications.” COM 233

Student Evaluations

Would you like to take another class with this instructor?
The instructor seemed generally interested in student success.
The instructor was willing and available to provide assistance.
“This course was by far my favorite thus far due to the professor’s teaching style. Instead of lecturing and requiring students to take notes, the professor made the class “fun” by getting them involved and requiring a (hands-on) promotional plan project” ICM506
“Required everyone to open up and get to know each other a little bit more than usual, which I think is a great attribute for a class to have.” COM233
“The class was challenging. I definitely learned a lot. The instructor tested our knowledge and really encouraged us to think outside of the box. It was a journey! But I’m glad I took the class. It introduced many aspects of the field that I didn’t know. Awesome instructor!” ICM 510
“Loved the knowledge this teacher had and how willing she was to help the students.” COM202
The grading system used in the course was fair.

Artistic Freedom
The computer is a perfect medium for fertile artistic creation. Even with its limitations, computers offer freedom of experimentation like no other media. As an example, if the artist tries one style or method and does not like it, they may easily and quickly change it as if the first version never existed. Therefore, once you have completed your class assignment, I strongly encourage further experimentation. Feel free to try out a variety of layouts or renderings for each assignment and select the one that works best. Try to incorporate the principals of design and color theory in each of your assignments. Use your time wisely and don’t quickly rush through the assignments just to get them completed. Discover, experiment, and explore the wide range of possibilities that the computer affords you.

Work In Progress - She Remembers Pearl Harbor
Sometimes those we love take their secrets with them and sometimes they leave behind clues, like breadcrumbs, waiting for someone to gather the pieces. My Grandmother left behind just such a trail with minuscule, nearly microscopic pieces, for me to assemble.
I am taking all of those pieces to create a picture of what is was to be an American, a military nurse, a daughter, a wife and a woman in a time when up was down and down was up. We can hardly image from our place today with the benefit of hindsight, what it took just to stay alive and to join together as a country to accomplish a single goal. Check out her story at www.sherememberspearlharbor.com
