with the expansion and renovation of our building, simultaneous
to the continued delivery of our robust programming. From the youngest campers to oldest audience
members, artists, staff, board and steering committee members, everyone supported the organization
during this challenging year of transition. With this strong focus, we’ve been able to reach our goal
of transforming our beloved Dance Place building into a state-of-the-art center for dance and
community, as well as a shining hub of creativity in Brookland/Edgewood.
IN OUR 2013-2014 PROGRAM YEAR, DANCE PLACE TOOK A DARING LEAP FORWARD
DURING CONSTRUCTION We kept our presentation series vibrant by utilizing other area theaters with festival format programs from September 2013 – January 2014. This allowed us to maintain strong support for DC area dance companies and keep our loyal audiences engaged. We built new relationships with other DC theaters in order to co-present our outstanding spring touring artists such as Kyle Abraham and Sean Dorsey, as well as the 20th anniversary performances of DC’s own Step Afrika!
IN OUR NEIGHBORHOODThis past year, Dance Place contributed to the vibrancy of the newly created Monroe St. Market Arts Walk as the occupant of Studio 21 (our community visual art gallery) and presenter of Art on 8th free arts events. These Art on 8th programs, held during April – September, included free music concerts on Thursday evenings, interactive dance events on Friday nights and arts & crafts on Saturdays. At Studio 21 we featured twelve different visual art exhibits, with gallery openings the first Thursday of every month.
The Monroe St. Market’s new Edgewood Arts Center provided essential transitional program space in which to hold Dance Place’s classes while our building was under construction. Remarkably all of our dance classes and youth programs continued unabated — and in fact grew! — on 8th St NE through our use of the Edgewood Arts Center, Studio 21, Brookland Artspace Lofts dance studio and our Creative Education Center.
DANCE PLACE REOPENSOn June 6th we moved back into our wonderful new facility with just 24 hours to prepare for our 27th annual DanceAfrica, DC festival. As with every new building, there were many things to finish and correct; however everyone was glad to be back in our facility for this signature part of our programming. Since opening, our spirits have been uplifted with the reactions and appreciations for our expanded space and the many new beautiful design features. We are particularly proud of the interactive “Touch My Building” light and sound installation at the colorful corner of our building created by the world-renowned artist Christopher Janney. What a perfect public art installation inviting the community to be a part of the new Dance Place.

OUR MISSION
FOUNDED IN 1980,CAPITAL CAMPAIGN SUPPORTThank you to the many government agencies, foundations, corporations and individuals who have given generously to the Dance Place Moving Forward Campaign. With everyone’s tireless efforts and support, Dance Place has arrived at this milestone and now has a new beautiful facility to call home. We are grateful for the deep dedication of our project partners — particularly Bognet Construction Company, Hickok Cole Architects, Owner’s Representative Richard Pilkinton and Artspace Projects — who made all the difference in making this vision a reality.
While we celebrate this success, we have not yet arrived at our final destination. Our next goal is to repay the $800,000 bridge gap loan by September 2015 to begin our 35th Anniversary Season afresh. As of January 31, 2015, we have paid $400,000 of the loan.
Come aboard, enjoy the ride and see how you can become part of our success as we travel to the next destination on this amazing journey.
Dance Place builds a community
of artists, audiences and students through high quality
performances, commissions, training and educational
programs. We are committed to enriching the field of dance
locally, nationally and internationally. Our thriving arts
campus serves as an anchor in the development of our
Brookland/Edgewood neighborhood in Washington, DC.

As long standing residents of Brookland and donors to Dance Place, Damien and Janice were early investors in our journey. Their support, volunteerism and business acumen assists us in strengthening our capacity to serve artists, youth and audiences.
“We support Dance Place because they present up-and-coming, as well as established, dance artists, giving us a chance to see local companies as well as those from around the world. It’s just as important to us that Dance Place is deeply rooted in the neighborhood! By working with young people in the community, Dance Place provides great opportunities to learn life skills and have real life working experiences.”
