Announced in May 2010 that it would merge with UAL Corporation (United Airlines’ parent company), by means of a stock swap.
The purchase was concluded in October 2010, by which time the holding corporation had its name changed to United Continental Holdings.
During the incorporation period, both Continental and United ran separate flights under the supervision of a merged leadership team, based in Chicago, Illinois; the merger was finished on March 31, 2013.
Had ownership interests and brand partnerships with a number of airlines.
Was a minority owner of ExpressJet Airlines, which operated under the Continental Express trade name, despite being a separately managed and public corporation.
Chautauqua Airlines also operated under the Continental Express identity; Cape Air, Colgan Air, CommutAir, and Silver Airways operated Continental flights under the Continental Connection identity.
