THIS WEEKEND
1-ACT PLAY COMPETITION; THE PLAY’S THE THING, FRIDAY & SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 9th & 10th , 8PM, AUDITORIUM: Collington welcomes a National One Act Play Competition. This event in the past has been held at the Howard County Center for the Arts and the Greenbelt Arts Center. The sponsor, Thunderous Productions, routinely promotes Collington in its playbills and advertising. This is traditional theater at its core and for this competition, actors must rely on their ability to not only sustain a character in a short time but do so without amplification; in other words, mics can’t be used. Events of this type showcase Collington’s support of the performing arts, as do the many recital and choral offerings throughout the year. This event is open to the wider community; Collington residents will be able to purchase tickets at a discount. Some events are free at Collington; some off campus are as well. Many require ticket purchases; others are free. There is a transit charge for buses. Other residents may choose to car pool. These two evenings are in our own auditorium and provide a look at the range of our interests to those who do not live here. The four plays are: STREET SCENES by Francine Jamin; EVER AFTER by Matt Hanf; MULTIPLE CHOICE, a pithy courtroom drama by Ron Tochterman; and THE JOB by Letha Dawson, a southern- tinged drama. The last named is directed by Trix Whitehall, familiar to
Collington 6 September 12-18, 2016
some residents as one of the gossipy harpies in THE EATON WOMAN.
PROTESTANT WORSHIP SERVICE, SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 11, 1:30PM – CHAPEL: Please welcome to Collington again our friends and neighbors from Woodstream Church. Minister Malcolm Reeves will lead the service. Please remember the time is now 1:30PM. All are invited and welcome. Questions? Please call Ardyce Asire at x7348

Competitive sisters Dottie and Kit Keller (Lori Petty) spar with each other, scout Ernie Capadino (Jon Lovitz) and grumpy has-been coach Jimmy Dugan (Tom Hanks) on their way to fame. Madonna and Rosie O'Donnell co-star as two of the sisters' teammates. MENTORING MEETING, WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 14, 1:30PM – BOARD ROOM: Attention Prospective Mentors!!! Collington 8 September 12-18, 2016
be exploring some possible connections between two issues that seem to be coming to the surface rather often: Anger and Political Correctness. We will look at the history of attitudes toward anger and also attempt to make a case for putting "Polite" back into politics." ALL ARE WELCOME to join us for the service and lunch afterward in the Dining Room. TAKE 5 JAZZ: THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, WASHINGTON, D.C.: Departs from Security at 3:45PM. Music is from 5 - 7 PM. NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY COMMITTEE: The library committee has just made its September purchase of new books. You can see currently popular new fiction, mystery, history, biographies by looking in the binder just as you walk in the front door of the library. They will be listed under NEWLY ACQUIRED BOOKS --AUGUST 1-31. If you prefer to get your information online, there are bookmarks by the computers giving you the log-in information and directions. FITNESS/POOL TRANSITIONING: As we shared with you earlier, Patrese is relocating to Kentucky and her last day at Collington is today (September 9th). Alex and Q will certainly be available to assist
Collington 10 September 12-18, 2016
you in the Fitness Center and Swimming Pool. A few items worth mentioning during this transitional phase: Patrese was working on the expansion of Fitness Classes offered here at Collington. This expansion included a plan to how the fitness equipment is used. Ideally, the equipment is in three places; Fitness Center, Auditorium closet and Game Room Closet. The Game Room closet has been completely organized and should remain this way to account for all equipment. Moving forward, we ask that all Fitness Equipment that belongs to Collington be completely accessible. No equipment should be locked at any time, unless designated by a Collington staff member. If the equipment belongs to someone else or an instructor, that piece of equipment should either be (1) labeled as theirs, and/or (2) taken with them at the end of class. If there is a need for additional equipment or any general questions/comments during the transition, please direct those requests to Karen Boyce (Chief Operating Officer). DISTRICT/CLUSTER LEADERS, ACTIVITY/OPERATING CHAIRS: If you are transitioning off or taking on a new role within the Residents Association, please notify Karen Cheney via email at [email protected] or by phone at x5023. The Health Services Committee: of the Residents Association is developing a list of medical specialists who residents have used and are pleased with. If you have any information to share could you send it to Joe Howard in 2017 (x7265) or [email protected]? Please include name of doctor, specialty, organization (if any), address and phone number.
FROM THE COLLINGTON SINGERS: On Monday September 19 at 4:00 p.m. in the Auditorium there will be a Reception for Gailyn Gwin who is retiring as Director of the Collington Singers after being the

POOL CLOSURE: The pool will be closed on Wednesday, September 14, and Saturday, September 24. SNOW! I realize it is rather early to start using that four-letter word, but I would like to create a listing of available sleeping options for our employees should we get another bad snow storm this winter. So, if you have an extra bedroom, couch, air mattress, etc., and you would be willing to have an employee spend the night (should the need arise), please let me know! Hopefully, we won’t need to call on you, but having a list ready, will surely make planning easier. Contact Karen Cheney, x5023 or email [email protected] with the information. ABSENTEE BALLOTS: If you would like to request an absentee ballot or register to vote in the state of Maryland please come and get a form from the Resident Services office!

A Message from Marion Robbins: I arrived at Collington in late May. I am a Yoga teacher, with a teaching certificate from Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, where I graduated in 1994. I also was certified in yoga therapy from Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy in 1995. I have been teaching yoga ever since. I would like to offer a weekly yoga class at Collington for whoever is interested. The yoga I teach is a mindful, slow yoga, based on breastwork, restorative stretching, guided relaxation, and mindfulness. This type of yoga creates self-awareness while eliciting the relaxation response, balancing the nervous system and optimizing self-healing. It is known to improve immune function, enhance digestion, release habitual tension and cultivate a calm body, clear mind, and an open heart.
