The Everson Museum of Art is delighted to once again host the grand finale exhibition of On My Own Time, in partnership with CNY Arts. Since its founding as the Syracuse Museum of Fine Arts in 1897, the Everson has been the region’s premier venue for the celebration of creative expression. On My Own Time is a program that fully embrac-es the idea of creativity, providing employees of local businesses who are also visual artists on their own time the opportunity to publicly share their work with others.
The program benefits these talented amateur art-ists and the community alike, giving artists a high-profile space in which to display their work and giving the community a chance to witness a burst of creativity in their workplaces each year. The annual On My Own Time exhibitions are an inspiring reminder of how important it is to rec-ognize, promote, and support artistic talent, even among those who are not professional artists.
The staff and Board of Trustees at the Everson thank all of the companies and organizations for partnering with the Museum and CNY Arts on this much-loved program, as well as the vol-unteers at each company who have generously donated both their time and talents to coordinate the project this year. On My Own Time recog-nizes the diverse creative accomplishments of our working community members, and the Everson is pleased to provide a space where those accom-plishments can be enjoyed and flourish.
Welcome to the 42nd annual presentation of On My Own Time. In 1973, On My Own Time was conceived as an innovative partnership between local artists and Central New York businesses, educational institutions, government and
nonprofit groups. It is an endeavor that fosters mutual respect and serves as an exciting, successful example of how these different ‘worlds’ can work cooperatively to each other’s benefit. CNY Arts is happy to continue celebrating the incredible creativ-ity and artistic spirit of our local work force!
In 2015, sixteen organizations from Onondaga and Oswego counties joined On My Own Time and hosted inspiring displays of original visual art created by employees who are also amateur artists. A total of 172 artists submitted 370 pieces of art in a wide range of media, such as fiber art, woodwork, oil painting, photography, and sculpture. CNY Arts’ volunteer panel of twelve local arts professionals visited each company’s on-site exhibit and made the very difficult selection decisions for this grand finale exhibit at the Everson Museum of Art.
The staff and board members of CNY Arts and I thank the dozens of local companies, and many hundreds of employees who have been part of On My Own Time over the last 42 years. Numer-ous studies and surveys have given evidence to the fact that Central New York is unusually rich in arts and culture, but anyone who has been part of this unique program doesn't need con-vincing of that!
We also thank our On My Own Time partner, the Everson Museum of Art, and its staff members, for their generosity, time, and talent in installing and hosting this exhibit. Finally, heartfelt thanks to our 2015 On My Own Time lead sponsors, Upstate Medical University, WRVO Public Me-dia, Syracuse City School District, and to Onon-daga County, for their demonstrated support of On My Own Time, its artists, and our community as a whole.
