Overview of our tours

At ChocoMuseo we offer mainly two tours named after

two famous types of cacao plants: “Forastero” and

“Trinitario”.

The map above summarizes our two tours which are

described more precisely in the next pages.

Forastero tour

DAY 1

7:30 am (Public transportation alternative): Transportation (taxi) from your hotel to the bus terminal, and transportation (mini bus) from the bus terminal to Huayopata (Julia’s farm). 8:00 am (Private transportation alternative): Transportation from your hotel to Huayopata (Julia’s farm). 12:30 am: Welcome fresh fruit juice at Julia’s farm. 1:00 pm: Lunch at Julia’s farm. (Traditional food from the region) 2:30 pm – 5:30 pm: Activities in Julia’s farm. Depending on the season you will:

Visit the tea plantation and factory Visit the coffee plantation and learn more about the coffee process Discover and taste the exotic fruits of the season

5:30pm: Moment with Julia’s family. If you would like to help cooking, feel free to ask Julia. 6:00 pm: Dinner and evening with Julia’s family. 8:00 pm: With Jose and Julia, learn how to peel, roast and grind coffee. Prepare the coffee you will enjoy the next morning for breakfast. 9:00 pm: Night at Julia’s farm in rooms with private bathroom and hot water.

Julia with her husband José and their children, Moïses and Miguel

Julia was a former teacher. She is now taking care of a 3 hectares plantation of coffee, bananas, mangos, avocados, exotic fruits and tea. She is also involved in the development of the district of Huayopata on the social and educational topics. You will spend a lovely time with that cheerful family.

DAY 2

7:30 am: Breakfast at Julia’s farm with great coffee. 8:00 am: Transportation (private) to Maranura (Rosa’s farm). 9:00 am: Activities with Rosa:

Discovering the cacao tree and its fruit Learning about harvest, fermentation and drying of

cacao beans Roasting and grinding cacao beans from the farm Preparing a hot chocolate with your freshly ground

12:00 am: Transportation (private) to Santa Maria. 12:30 am: Lunch in Santa Maria. (Menu of the day)

Option 1: Back to Cusco

1:30 pm (Public transportation alternative): Transportation (mini bus) to the bus terminal in Cusco and transportation (taxi) to your hotel. Arrival at around 7pm. 1:30 pm (Private transportation alternative): Transportation to your hotel in Cusco. Arrival at around 6pm.

Option 2: Let’s visit Machupicchu!

1:00 pm: Transportation to Hidroélectrica 3:00 pm: You can either walk (2h30) from Hidroélectrica to Aguas Calientes by the railway or take the train. 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm: Check in your hotel in Aguas Calientes (standard accommodation with private bathroom and hot water). 7:00 pm: Dinner in Aguas Calientes (not included). Note: For the next day, please read the section “Visit of Machupicchu”

Highlight on public transportation

Even with public transportation, you’ll have a guide with you at all times. He/She will pick you up at your hotel and drive you to the public terminal where you’ll take a minibus (cf. picture) together. Your place will have been booked for you, and you may travel with other local people. Note: Sometimes there is no seatbelt as it is not obligatory in Peru.

Highlight on Rosa’s cacao plantation

Roasting beans over the fire

At Rosa’s cacao plantation in Maranura you will learn all the secrets of Theobroma cacao (also known as the “food of the gods”). With her you will prepare a delicious hot chocolate from dried beans from her plantation. Rosa has 2 types of cacao trees in her plantation: the “chuncho” and the “hybrido”

Highlight on the walk from Hidroélectrica to Aguas Calientes

Arriving at Aguas Calientes

The 2 to 3 hours walk from Hidroélectrica to Aguas Calientes is a flat and nice walk in the wonderful nature near Machupicchu. You hike on a path by the railway and the river. You shouldn’t miss it if you are fit! The landscapes are unforgettable!

After picking coffee from the plantation

At Alejandro’s farm you will enjoy the great view of the Salkantay mountain. Far from the road you will take your time to live in harmony with the nature.

DAY 3

Option 1: Back to Cusco

8:00 am: Breakfast at Alejandro’s farm with fresh coffee from the farm. 8:30 am: Free time at Alejandro’s farm. 10:00 am: Walk (30 min) from Alejandro’s farm to the road. 10:30 am: Transportation (private) to Santa Maria. 12:30 am: Lunch in Santa Maria. (Menu of the day) 1:30 pm (Public transportation alternative): Transportation (mini bus) to the bus terminal in Cusco and transportation (taxi) to your hotel. Arrival at around 7pm. 1:30 pm (Private transportation alternative): Transportation to your hotel in Cusco. Arrival at around 6pm.

Option 2: Let’s visit Machupicchu!

7:00 am: Breakfast at Alejandro’s farm with fresh coffee from the farm. 8:00 am: Walk (3h) from Alejandro’s farm to the thermal waters by the Vilcanota river. 11:00 am: Swim in the thermal waters. 11:45 am: Walk (45min) from the thermal waters to Santa Teresa. 12:30 am: Lunch in Santa Teresa. (Menu of the day) 1:30 pm: Transportation from Santa Teresa to Hidroélectrica. 2:15 pm: You can either walk (2h30) from Hidroélectrica to Aguas Calientes by the railway or take the train (extra charge of US$18) to reach Aguas Calientes. 5:30 pm: Check in your hotel in Aguas Calientes (standard accommodation with private bathroom and hot water). 7:00 pm: Dinner in Aguas Calientes (not included). Note: For the next day and the visit of Machupicchu, please read the section “Visit of Machupicchu”

Highlight on the walk to the thermal waters

You will feel like Indiana Jones when crossing the river The 3 hours walk from Alejandro’s farm to Santa Teresa goes through wonderful landscapes. You will cross the river twice, on a bridge or zip line. When you arrive at the thermal waters you will enjoy a great time in the middle of the nature.

Visit of Machupicchu If you choose to finish your tour with the visit of Machupicchu, here is what your last day would look like. 5:45 am: Continental breakfast at your hotel. 6:15 am: Transportation (bus) to Machupicchu. You can choose to hike (2h) to Machupicchu – in that case, you need to leave your hotel at 4:30 am. 6:45 am: Visit of Machupicchu with a guide. 9:45 am: Exploring of Machupicchu by yourself. You can choose to climb Huaynapicchu (extra charge of S/. 24, reservation needs to be done in advance) at 7:00 am or 10:00 am. 12:30 am: Transportation (bus) from Machupicchu to Aguas Calientes. 1:00 pm: Lunch in Aguas Calientes (not included). 2:55 pm: Transportation from Aguas Calientes to Ollantaytambo. Sometimes this train is not available and we’ll have to charge you an extra fee for other trains at other times. 4:30 pm: Transportation (public) from Ollantaytambo to the bus terminal in Cusco. 6:15 pm: Transportation (taxi) from the bus terminal to your hotel.

Highlight on Huaynapicchu

Huaynapicchu is the mountain peak in the back

You can choose to climb the Huaynapicchu mountain. It is a 30 min to 1h walk up to reach the top. This walk is quite tough but as soon as you are on top you forget all the difficulties you had reaching it. If you have no physical problem don’t hesitate to climb Huaynapicchu.
