Applicationof3DEM inversion inpractice– Challenges, pitfalls and solutionapproaches

Marion Miensopust is currently research scientist and coordinator of the multidisciplinaryjunior research group dealing with subrosion processes at the Leibniz Institute for AppliedGeophysics in Hannover (LIAG), Germany. After receiving her diploma in Geophysics at theWWUMuenster, Germany (2003), sheworked at the University of Hamburg in the area ofmarinegeophysics(2004/2005).In2010,shereceivedherPhDfromtheNationalUniversityofIreland, Galway based on research carried out at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies(DIAS), Ireland as part of the SouthernAfricanMagnetotelluric Experiment (SAMTEX). From2010 to 2012 she had her own PostDoc project at DIAS (MT and TEM at Eyjafjallajoekull,Iceland)whilegainingteachingexperienceattheWWUMuenster,Germany.Subsequentsheworked at the German Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR) inHannover,Germany,intheareaofairbornegeophysics(2012-2014).Since2014sheisatLIAG

JavierFulleaiscurrentlyaMarieSkłodowska-Curiepost-docFellowattheDublinInstituteforAdvancedStudies(DIAS), Ireland.HereceivedhisPhDinEarthSciencesfromtheInstituteofEarth Sciences “JaumeAlmera” (CSIC)-University ofBarcelona, Spain, in 2008. From2009 to2011hejoinedtheEMgroupintheDIASasapost-doc.AfterthathemovedtotheInstituteofGeosciences (IGEO, CSIC-UCM) in Madrid, Spain, as a JAE-DOC programme post-doctoralfellow.Hehasageneralgeophysicalbackgroundwithanemphasisoncomputationalmodelling(e.g.geo-software development and processing of geophysical data). His research interest isfocused on integrated petrological-geophysical modelling of the thermal and compositionalstructure of the lithosphere and sub-lithospheric uppermantle using awide variety of datasets. Over the last years, he has been developing, together with relevant collaborators, different forward and inversemodelling tools providing a bridge between laboratory-basedstudies (e.g., solid solutionmodels, thermodynamics, mineral physics, etc.) and geophysicalterrestrial and satellite observations/models (e.g., seismic tomography, gravimetry, satellitedata, magnetotellurics etc.). The codes have been successfully applied to study thelithospheric structure in different tectonic environments, from young Phanerozoic terranes(e.g. Atlas Mountains, Alboran basin, Central Mongolia) to old Precambrian cratons(Kaapvaal), using different data sets (e.g., topography, potential fields, surface heat flow,Rayleigh-andLove-wavephasevelocities,MTresponses).
