S: Define in your own words what an element is and what an element is not.
P: Video on the Periodic Table
Properly write a chemical symbol
All elements in the Periodic Table have symbols that are recognized world wide.
It does not matter which country you are in or the language you speak.
Example: The element Iron is always identified by “Fe” and Oxygen is “O”.
The names are not always the same but the symbols are. “Fe” is iron in Canada, fer in France and fier in Romania.

Chemical Symbols
A Chemical symbol is an abbreviation of a name of an element.

Elements3 Naming Rules
Rule 1: PRINT all symbols. Rule 2: If there is only one
letter, that letter is always a capital. Example: H for hydrogen
Rule 3: If there are two letters, the first letter is a capital and the second is lower case. Example: He for helium
Worksheet
Use the periodic table in your textbook to complete the worksheet.
Why do you think scientists use symbols instead of element names?
C:
Create a symbol for your own element. Write the name of the element and tell one special characteristic of it.
E:

To understand that elements can be represented by chemical symbols; to understand that compounds can be represented by chemical formulas; and to understand that the ratio of elements in a compound are demonstrated in its chemical formula.

• You have been given a mystery bag of mixed “elements”. Each M&M represents an atom of an element, and each color represents a different type of element, with its own symbol, given in the chart below. Before opening your bag of elements, hypothesize about how many of each type of element you have been given. • Taking turns, you and your partner will build 7 different compounds for each other. Record the number of atoms of each element used in the compound in the chart, and then write the formula for the compound in the space provided. You may reuse the elements as needed to make the different compounds.
Directions:
C: Draw two of the compounds you created. Use color. Create a color key to identify the elements in your drawing. Name your compounds.
E: Conclusion: Using complete sentences and in your own words, write 3 rules that must be followed when writing chemical formulas and symbols.

P: A Pure Substances is…A sample of matter that has definite
chemical and physical properties.
Elements: pure substance that cannot be separated into simpler substance by physical or chemical means.
Compounds
Pure substance composed of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds.
Made of elements in a specific
ratio that is always the sameHas a chemical formulaCan only be separated by chemical means, not physically
Mixtures
A combination of two or more pure substances that are not chemically combined.
substances held together by physical forces, not chemical
No chemical change takes place
Each item retains its properties
in the mixture
They can be separated physically Chem4kids.com

A: Can you identify the following?
An element contains just one type of atom.
A compound contains two or more different atoms joined together.
A mixture contains two or more different substances that are only physically joined together, not chemically.
A mixture can contain both elements and compounds.
