Nicks Barbershop Chess Beau Hardeman, USCF Certified Chess Tournament Director, (in white sweatshirt) plays each student in this group using a chess clock. The clock teaches students the importance of time management. He teaches students to watch the entire board to help make critical decisions about their next move in a timely manner. They can lose the game if their time runs out. These students are preparing to participate in the 20th Annual Beau Hardeman Rated K-9 Student Chess Tournament on May 2nd at the Gresham Park Recreation Center. Nicks Barbershop Chess sessions are held two hours on Saturday mornings.

GreenForest Christian Academy Primary grades sessions are centered around learning the basic fundamentals of chess, understanding how and where the pawns or pieces move on the board. Chess helps develop kids critical and analytical thinking skills and develop self esteem.

7th and 8th grade chess student sessions are more focused on teaching tactics, discoveries and strategies while using the chess clock. Students who learn the fundamentals of playing chess often perform better taking tests and earn better grades in school. Beau Hardeman teaches chess sessions at GCA with each group for one hour on Wednesdays.
