The Missouri Press Association is an organi-zation of newspapers in the state.
Organized May 17, 1867, as the Editors andPublishers Association of Missouri, the namewas changed in 1877 to the Missouri Press Asso-ciation. In 1922, the association became a non-profit corporation; a central office was openedunder a field manager whose job it was to travelthe state and help newspapers with problems.
The association, located in Columbia, became the fifth press association in the nationto finance its headquarters through membercontributions. The MPA’s building was complet-ed in 1969.
As a founder of institutions the Missouri PressAssociation aided in establishment of the Con-federate Soldiers’ Home, the upbuilding of thenormal schools, support of the public school sys-tem and advancement of the University of Mis-souri.
The association founded the State HistoricalSociety of Missouri and today several of its mem-bers serve on the board of trustees. Greatestamong its achievements is the establishment ofthe first school of journalism in the world. TheMissouri School of Journalism at the Universityof Missouri–Columbia continues as the largestand foremost school of its kind.
Through their association, the publishers inMissouri have worked to keep the press free andalert, as well as responsible; to keep it financial-ly independent so it can render impartial publicservice; to understand changing trends in busi-ness and in reader needs. Activities of the asso-ciation include setting up workshops, seminars, conventions, publication of a magazine, TheMissouri Press News, supplying information tomembers, helping newspapers find skilled per-sonnel and assisting with the placement of stu-dents graduating from the school of journalism.
On the occasion of its 100th anniversary in1966, the association re-established the oldSaline County Herald newspaper office in his-

Missouri Broadcasters Association1808 Southwest Blvd., PO Box 104445Jefferson City 65110Telephone: (573) 636-6692 / FAX: (573) [email protected]
The first radio stations to begin operations inMissouri were KMBC-AM (now KMBZ) inKansas City and WEW-AM in St. Louis. Bothsigned on the air in 1921. In the following years, the number of radio operations steadily in-creased as the first FM stations began broadcast-ing in 1948. Today, we have approximately 250radio stations serving listeners in Missouri.
Television broadcasting began in 1947 whenKSD-TV (now KSDK) in St. Louis signed on theair, followed in 1949 by WDAF-TV in KansasCity. Federal policy suspended the granting ofany further licenses until 1953. Shortly afterlicensing resumed, many additional televisionstations began operations. There are now approx-imately 35 commercial and public television sta-tions broadcasting a variety of news, informationand entertainment programs each day.
The Missouri Broadcasters Association wasformed August 15, 1948, in Kansas City. Mis-souri was the second state to have a full-timebroadcast association. North Carolina’s associa-tion was formed earlier that same year. From itsoffices in Jefferson City, the MBA works for thebroadcasters of Missouri, as well as allied organ-izations, to provide a variety of services.
The MBA is governed by a four-person exec-utive committee and a eight-person board ofdirectors representing radio and televisionbroadcasters. Board members are elected fortwo-year terms and may seek re-election for oneadditional term. In addition, there are four stand-ing committees, each responsible for a specificarea of service. There are a total of 42 membersserving on these committees. The committeeshave three roles: to represent member interestsin state and federal legislative and regulatoryprocess; maintain the MBA office as a resourcecenter for training, revenue expansion, cost con-trol and information; and encourage the higheststandards in broadcasting.
Since 1968, the Missouri Broadcasters Asso-ciation has maintained a communications center
MISSOURI BROADCASTERS 871
on the first floor of the State Capitol. These facil-ities are available to radio and television broad-casters to aid in their coverage of state news. These facilities are also available to state officialsand legislators for the recording of informationto be sent to radio and television stations in Mis-souri. Currently, plans are being made to updatethis facility with the latest technology to betterserve these purposes.
