•  Nicotine Addiction •  Nicotine = addictive ingredient in tobacco •  Stress response ( h.r., b.p. up) •  Withdrawal = craving, low b.p., nausea, headache, anxiety,

drowsiness, irritability

Health Effects of Smoking

•  Cigarette contents •  4,000 hazardous compounds (tar, ammonia,

formaldehyde)

•  carcinogens = cancer causing agents - 43

•  Lungs •  tar makes mucus abnormally thick - coughing

•  emphysema = disease which makes it hard to breath, die of heart attack/stroke

•  bronchitis = thick mucus, deep hard coughing
