ENVIRANODE
What is EnvirAnode®?EnvirAnode is an environmentally focusedcathodic protectionsystem. TheEnvirAnode®CPS is first and foremost an effectiveimpressed currentcathodic protectionsolution, familiar, but different:Familiar in thatan EnvirAnode®CP system is installedusingthe sametools and techniquesas thoseusedin traditional anode beds, thoughsimplerasthe ventpipeandanode centring rings are notrequired.Differentin thatan EnvirAnode®CPsystem is constructed fromrobust extendedlifeAELAnodesembedded in a conductiveimpermeablecolumnmade from speciallyformulatedConducrete®backfill material.
Installed, this configuration transforms into amolecularly bonded tertiaryelectronic energytransfer systemwith a very largeactive surfacearea over which the CP energy is effectivelydissipated into the soil. This results in the ionicreaction boundary beingshiftedaway from thesurface of the anode core to the interfacebetween the column and soil, where the largesurface area reduces the circumferential energydensity, thereby reducingcarbonconsumption/depletion by nearly half, andextending the life of the anodebed.

Energy transfer efficiencyThe electronic energy transfer mechanism of the EnvirAnode®gives extremely stable electrical operating behaviour in use, especially when compared to the electrolytic energy transferutilized in traditional anode beds. The large active, low energydensity surface area of the EnvirAnode® column causesminute bubbles of gas to be formed over the entire surface ofthe column, where it is easily absorbed into the soil before itcan collect into concentrated pockets. Thus, by bettermanaging the production and dissipation of out-gassing, ventpipes are not required in EnvirAnode® installations and theoverall efficiency of the anode bed is increased. Once theEnvirAnode® column has set up, it provides an impenetrablebarrier to the migration of water, eliminating aquifer crosscontamination to help maintain the quality of critical waterresources. The impermeable characteristic continues evenafter the carbon has been depleted from the active areas ofthe column, eliminating expensive abandonment issues andcosts. The solid EnvirAnode® column also eliminates the“shelving off” phenomenon inside the bore that degrades theanode bed efficiency and shortens operational lifetimes intraditional coke breeze systems.
Conducrete® anti-corrosion protectionIn addition to being an energy transfer material, Conducrete®backfill provides excellent anti-corrosion benefits, protectingthe AEL Anode® against water penetration and corrosion andfurther extending the operational lifetime of the anode bed. Thepre-cast carbonaceous surround material used in the AELAnode® in turn provides additional anti-corrosion protectionfor the anode core – typically a mixed metal oxide (MMO) tube– and offers the additional benefit of delaying the onset of theaging “end effect” at the core. With superior CP energytransfer efficiency, three layers of energy transfer materials (thetertiary design), corrosion, “shelving off” and “end effects”either eliminated or delayed, and out-gassing very effectivelymanaged, it is no surprise that the cathodic protectionperformance and operational life of an EnvirAnode® CPS farexceeds any other solution in the market.

EnvirAnode Performance
Features:• The conductive Conducrete® backfill sets up to form a solid, impermeablecolumn that stops water migration and aquifer cross-contamination, a major issuewith coke breeze type anode beds.
• The combined volume of the three energy transfer materials, with their inherentprotection against water penetration and corrosion give the EnvirAnode® itsphenomenal operational lifespan of 2 to 3 times that of traditional CP anode beds.
• Two carbon and onemixedmetal oxide (MMO) energy transfer materials, molecularly bonded together into a single CP anodic column.
• Themolecular bonding process that ties the active energymaterials togetherresults in a highly efficient electronic energy transfer to the soil that provides astable and predictable electrical performance throughout its operational life.
• The large surface area of the EnvirAnode® lowers the surface energy density, and efficiently manages the normal gas byproducts produced that out-gassingvent pipes are not required.
• The EnvirAnode® even ages differently. The “shelving off” and “end effect”phenomenon associated with traditional anode beds is effectivelyeliminated, as the CP process slowly depletes carbon fromwithin the energytransfer materials, leaving the column itself intact and impermeable, thuseliminating abandonment costs and environmental pollution risks.
These features add up to unparalleled operational and environmental performance, which creates a compelling business case for EnvirAnode®CP solution evenbefore considering the significantly lower total cost of ownership.
The EnvirAnode® solution offersmore reliable and stable electrical performance (and cathodic protective value) over a longer operational lifetime than anyother impressed current cathodic protection solutions currently available. The EnvirAnode® is the world’s first molecular bonded tertiary energy transfertechnology developed expressly for cathodic protection applications, and is behind its stunning performance as a fully operational, environmentally neutralcathodic protection anode.

The Business Case for EnvirAnodeThe EnvirAnode® solution offers a compelling business case at several distinct levels; as an individual anode bed, as a system-wide CP deploymentand as a viable response to increasing stringent environmental regulations and control. At the level of individual anode beds, the EnvirAnode® offersa Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) that is less than half the TCO of traditional anode beds (see chart below).
When abandonment bond requirements are considered in the financial model(typically USD 50,000.00 per anode bed), the EnvirAnode® TCO is one thirdof traditional anode beds, with positive ROI on day one! This financial benefitstems primarily from the longer operating life of the EnvirAnode® and itsreduced maintenance costs. In a system-wide deployment, the uniqueoperational characteristics and performance for the EnvirAnode® offer asignificant reduction in system CAPEX, as fewer EnvirAnode® anode beds arerequired. For example, along a 150 mile (240km) pipeline, CP protection can
be obtained with three (3) x 300 ft EnvirAnode® anode beds producing amore stable current output, compared with five (5) x 150ft traditional cokebreeze beds required to provide a similar level of CP protection. The CAPEXare even more profound given the fact that virtually no abandonment costs arerequired with EnvirAnode® solution. Where strict environmental regulationsare in force, the EnvirAnode® is often the only deep well technology whichcan be deployed, since the EnvirAnode® technology has been approved foruse in environmentally sensitive areas by regulatory agencies.
